Chapter 144 The Secret Protector

Although she is fully aware of her shortcomings, Zheng Dandan has no intention of changing them. As the saying goes, when life is good, you should enjoy it to the fullest; even a fortune is not as good as living to the fullest.

After finishing her conversation with Secretary Su, she returned home.

"It's you?" Zheng Dandan looked at the reporter, whom she had met once before, and was quite surprised. "Why are you here?"

"Hello, Comrade Zheng Dandan. I am here to interview Comrade Sun Cuilan and have already obtained her consent in advance." The reporter smiled warmly.

Sun Cuilan is now a celebrity of some degree in the county and is quite popular.

"I see." Zheng Dandan nodded to indicate that she understood. She would not interfere with what Sun Cuilan had promised. She politely extended her hand and said, "Please."

"Reporter Wu is here!" Sun Cuilan emerged from the room, beaming. Ever since she learned the reporter wanted to interview her, she'd been in a state of euphoria. She'd never experienced such a glorious moment in her life!

"Hello, Comrade Sun Cuilan, it's a great honor to invite you for an interview." Reporter Wu said sweetly.

"Why are you being so polite to me? I haven't thanked you for upholding justice for me yet!" Although Sun Cuilan was not used to reporter Wu's flowery words, she knew clearly that reporter Wu was showing goodwill to her.

"It's just a small favor, and it's what we journalists should do." Reporter Wu said modestly with a satisfied smile on his face.

It is said that there is retribution for all deeds, and his act of upholding justice for Sun Cuilan also brought sales and reputation to the newspaper.

Sun Cuilan disagreed with reporter Wu's words. These were what journalists were supposed to do, so why didn't others clarify things for her? There were even some dark-hearted people slandering her!

"What's the matter with right or wrong? I just know that it was reporter Wu who helped me, and we will be grateful!" Sun Cuilan said carelessly.

Reporter Wu felt a warm feeling in his heart when he received the sincere gratitude from the people he helped.

"Comrade Sun Cuilan, can we start the interview?" He looked at Sun Cuilan.

"Well, ask me, and I will tell you everything I know." Sun Cuilan said proudly and generously.

"Okay, thank you for your cooperation," Reporter Wu thanked him and then began to ask questions, "Do you remember your childhood?"

"I remember, how could I not remember?"

"I heard from the villagers of Ginkgo Village that you had a difficult childhood. Can you share some of your memories with us now?"

"Actually, there's nothing special. Ever since I can remember, I've just been working in the fields and doing chores. I only had one bowl of porridge every day, and I was often so hungry I felt dizzy and lightheaded. When I couldn't stand it anymore, I'd wander around the mountains digging up wild grasses and vegetables to fill my stomach."

Sun Cuilan's tone was very calm, without a trace of sadness on her face, but reporter Wu was shocked.

"You said you only have one bowl of porridge every day?"

"Yeah, there are only a few grains of rice in the bowl, and the chopsticks can't even stand up. This is still considered good. If they get angry, I won't have a bowl at all."

"What about your parents and brother?"

"They live better. They have two meals a day, one dry and one liquid, mixed with wild vegetables. They don't starve."

"Do you know why your parents mistreat you, no, abuse you?"

"Why else? They wanted a son, but I'm a daughter. They've disliked me since I was born. If they hadn't thought I could be exchanged for a dowry when I grow up, they might have drowned me long ago." Sun Cuilan said nonchalantly.

"How did you survive those years of famine?" The person who heard this was heartbroken. Reporter Wu was worried that Sun Cuilan would be sad, so he quickly changed the subject.

"It's all thanks to my cleverness!" Sun Cuilan beamed with pride as she spoke of this. "During those years of severe drought, every household ran out of food, and life was very difficult. I was quite experienced because I often foraged for food outside. Even a severe drought couldn't faze me; I always found some fruit and weeds that hadn't withered."

"You are very capable." Reporter Wu praised sincerely, and the story of "Misfortune may turn out to be a blessing in disguise" came to his mind. The harsh treatment of Sun Cuilan by her father and mother actually gave her a survival advantage during the disaster year.

"Isn't it?" Sun Cuilan said without a trace of modesty. "You don't know, they wanted to kill me and feed their precious child. Fortunately, I was smart and capable, and I was found out. I didn't die, but their precious child didn't survive!"

When she said this, her tone was a little gloating.

Should!

Reporter Wu didn't notice this. He suddenly raised his head and looked at Sun Cuilan in disbelief. "Your parents want to kill you?"

"What's so surprising? Their precious baby doesn't work and his body is not well. I can't bear it. If they kill me, their precious baby can fill his stomach and survive." Sun Cuilan said indifferently.

"This is illegal!" reporter Wu emphasized loudly.

Sun Cuilan was startled and patted her chest, saying, "For their precious child, what's breaking the law?"

"Are you sad knowing that they want to kill you for meat?" Reporter Wu looked at Sun Cuilan with sympathy.

Sun Cuilan shook her head and said, "Not sad." She had become numb to her relatives long before the famine.

"Your parents are old and your mother is paralyzed. Will you support them?" Reporter Wu looked at Sun Cuilan. This was a question he had prepared in advance and written down in his notebook.

"We will give them a bite to eat, and nothing else." Sun Cuilan replied without any time to think, as if she already had the answer.

"What?" Reporter Wu looked at Sun Cuilan in surprise.

"We will give them a bite to eat, but nothing more." Sun Cuilan repeated.

"I thought you would ignore them." Reporter Wu looked at Sun Cuilan sincerely, his eyes full of admiration.

After a brief contact with Sun Cuilan, he thought he understood Sun Cuilan - she was clear about gratitude and resentment, was bold but kind, and was not a weak person.

How can such a person repay evil with kindness?

Of course, if Sun Cuilan chooses to refuse, reporter Wu also expressed understanding.

Sun Cuilan's parents are really too much. Even a tiger won't eat its own cubs, but they want to kill Sun Cuilan and eat her meat!

Reporter Wu secretly decided in his heart that after Sun Cuilan answered, he would pretend that he had never asked and delete the interview - he did not want Sun Cuilan to be involved in the public opinion storm again because of her refusal to support her parents.

Unexpectedly, Sun Cuilan gave him an unexpected answer.

"I don't want to take care of them, but my daughter said that supporting the elderly is a legal obligation and I have to abide by the law," Sun Cuilan said righteously.

She didn't want her daughter to be affected because of herself and those two old guys.

Seeing that her daughter is becoming more and more outstanding, she, as a mother, cannot fall behind.

"Your daughter is truly a filial, sensible, and law-abiding comrade," Reporter Wu praised.

"That's it!" When talking about Zheng Dandan, Sun Cuilan immediately became excited.

Seeing this, reporter Wu improvised and asked Sun Cuilan a few questions about her current family.

Sun Cuilan answered one by one, full of sweetness and happiness.

Repaying evil with kindness is commendable! Compared with Sun Cuilan, Sun's father and mother seem so evil.
