Chapter 43

"Can people really live here?" Ruan Jiaojiao asked in surprise.

She never imagined that the base they were talking about was such a shabby place.

It is not even known whether these simple protective measures can withstand the attacks of zombies.

This is also thanks to their luck!

Ruan Jiaojiao could see that in some houses, there were several old people lying on the tattered beds. She couldn't see the old people's appearance clearly, but from their body shapes, she could see that they were extremely thin.

"Is this also a base?"

When Ruan Jiaojiao heard Wan Anan speaking beside her, she frowned, her face full of confusion.

"Why not go to another large base?"

When they stood at the entrance of the base, Wan Anan couldn't help but ask.

The man smiled bitterly and said, "You know, those big bases not only require you to hand over supplies after you go there, but you also have to go out and search for supplies every day to pay for your resettlement. We were all driven out!"

He sighed, his voice choking with sobs, "We are just ordinary people with no special skills. We don't have enough supplies every day, and the elderly and children can't survive!"

Ruan Jiaojiao lowered her head and pondered for a moment, as if thinking about something. Then she raised her head and said with a smile, "Take us in and take a look!"

The man then waved his hand inside, and the iron door creaked like an old, unoiled hinge, and it took a long time to open.

"Sorry to have kept you waiting for so long. This door is quite old and difficult to open!" the man said with a wry smile.

As the door opened, Ruan Jiaojiao could finally see the whole scene inside.

In fact, it was similar to what she saw through the fence outside, and even more shabby when she looked at it up close.

There are more or less people living in these dilapidated houses.

Some people's houses even have broken roofs, leaving only a little space to shelter from wind and rain.

Ruan Jiaojiao looked up and saw that almost all the people here were old people and children, and they all looked skinny.

Apart from the dozen or so people who went out who were all young and middle-aged, almost all the people she saw were old, weak and sick.

Following the man forward, along the way, even children would stick their heads out, looking at Ruan Jiaojiao and her group with fearful and curious eyes.

"This is our base. I don't know if it's because it's close to the forest, but there are almost no zombies coming here." The man explained.

"That's why our base can be preserved, and these old people and children have a place to live!"

He glanced at Ruan Jiaojiao and saw that she looked calm, and sighed in his heart.

He didn't dare to think about asking Ruan Jiaojiao to help them, he could only try to impress her as much as possible.

It's just a possibility, hopeless.

The man sighed and continued to take Ruan Jiaojiao and the group on a tour of the base.

"I don't know your last name, miss?" the man asked in a low voice.

He wanted to call Ruan Jiaojiao, but he didn't know how to start, so he asked.

"My last name is Ruan, the same as Ruan Ji." Ruan Jiaojiao said with a smile.

"Miss Ruan, you have also seen our base, and I believe you are aware of the specific situation. What about the food issue?" He seemed to be hesitant to speak, looking at Ruan Jiaojiao expectantly.

Ruan Jiaojiao smiled, but the expression in her dark pupils was murky and unclear, making it difficult to guess what she was thinking.

"How many people are there in your base?" she asked with a smile.

"There are forty-eight in total. There were originally more than fifty, but a few of them starved to death these days." The man sighed.

Ruan Jiaojiao nodded and asked softly, "Apart from you, are all the people in the base old, weak, sick, or disabled?"

The man didn't expect Ruan Jiaojiao to ask this. He nodded in surprise and whispered, "We are the few people here who still have some strength left."

"Other than that, there are just half-grown children like them."

He pointed at the heads hiding behind him and said with a smile, "Xiao Zheng, Xiao Ming, Yun Duo, the three of you, stop hiding. I can see you all!"

When they heard their names being called suddenly, three heads gradually popped out of the house, staring at Ruan Jiaojiao and her group with big eyes.

Ruan Jiaojiao was amused by these little rascals and whispered, "Come out quickly!"

Apparently they didn't listen to her.

"Xiao Zheng, Xiao Ming, Yun Duo, come out! They are good people and they saved your Uncle Liu!"

The man shouted, and then the three little heads slowly left the wall and their bodies slowly poked out.

Ruan Jiaojiao looked up and saw three children, two boys and one girl, all of whom had slender limbs and pale faces.

When staring, the eyeballs appear particularly large, even looking a little creepy!

She felt a little sad. If these children were in the world before the end of the world, they would be the treasures of their parents and grandparents. But now in the world of the end of the world, they have become like this!

It's really sad!

"Uncle Liu! Who are they?" the older of the three children spoke.

He pointed at Ruan Jiaojiao who was standing not far from them and said loudly.

"Xiao Zheng, this is a guest, you can't point your finger at him! It's impolite!" Uncle Liu quickly stopped Xiao Zheng's behavior, fearing that it would displease Ruan Jiaojiao and the others.

"Uncle Liu, will the guests give us food?" the youngest girl asked timidly.

She seemed to be very afraid of Ruan Jiaojiao, but also curious, and her eyes kept glancing at Ruan Jiaojiao.

The girl's voice was soft. She pulled the boy's arm and occasionally peeked out her head.

"Your name is Yun Duo, right?" Ruan Jiaojiao asked gently with a curl of her lips.
