The next morning, Xiaomei and Shaozi hurriedly boarded the train, each pulling a suitcase and carrying a duffel bag. Xu Mengyao repeatedly urged them to be careful, while Grandpa Qi personally escorted them aboard. He found a colleague at work in the sleeper area and safely locked the subscription certificates in the duty room, finally feeling relieved.
An hour later, Xu Mengyao also boarded a regular train to Beijing. It would take more than 20 hours to reach her destination. Fortunately, Grandpa Qi helped her arrange a sleeper berth, otherwise, sitting in a hard seat for more than 20 hours would be too much for even an iron waist.
Before leaving, Grandma Qi took out three red envelopes and handed them to Xu Mengyao: "Wenjuan, this is the New Year's money for you three sisters, take them all back."
Xu Mengyao also smiled and took out a cowhide bag:
"I wasn't going to give it to you now, fearing you'd refuse. Here are 66 subscription certificates. I bought them for Maomao with the two thousand dollars you gave me. I also wish him a prosperous new year."
Grandma Qi shook her head: "Just keep it for yourself, it's no use giving it to him."
Xu Mengyao insisted, "Grandma, just keep it. I wasn't being polite to you. The house in Huanshi, the furniture you left behind, which one doesn't cost money? I've been bothering you all these days since I came to Haicheng with Xiaomei and Shaozi. I know everything, but I don't say it because I treat you as family. But family doesn't just ask for things. You think of me, and I think of you. So you must accept these subscription certificates and don't sell them easily. Contact me if you have any questions."
Her words made Grandma Qi's heart burn, and her eyes reddened slightly. She had no choice but to accept the subscription certificate and held Xu Mengyao's hand tightly.
"Hey kid, take care of yourself. Eat these snacks on the train. If you get hungry, go to the dining car. There are also boxed lunches for sale on the platform. Buy some and eat them hot. Remember to call me when you get there."
Xu Mengyao nodded and comforted Grandma Qi with a smile: "Grandma, don't worry, I will."
Grandpa Qi escorted Xu Mengyao to the train, helped her find a sleeper car, and helped her stow her luggage before reluctantly disembarking. As the train slowly began to move, Xu Mengyao stood by the window, waving goodbye to Grandpa and Grandma Qi on the platform until their figures faded into obscurity. She returned to her lower bunk, staring out the window at the scenery, her thoughts racing.
Across from them, on the lower bunk, sat a young mother and son. The mother was dressed rather flamboyantly, and next to her, a little boy, about five or six years old, was fiddling with a toy gun and car. He would shoot at his mother, then at other people in the car, making "biu biu biu" noises.
At first, Xu Mengyao thought the kid was cute, and when he shot her, she even pretended to be shot and fell on the bed. Then the kid said:
"Hahaha, look, mom, I killed the little devil."
You little bastard, you curse so rudely!
When Xu Mengyao heard this, she stopped pretending, rolled her eyes and stood up, feeling so angry that her teeth were itching: I was just trying to play with you out of kindness, but you treated me like a devil.
At this time, the little boy's mother smiled and praised: "Dabao is great, you defeated the enemy!"
Well, they are a couple who can’t tell the difference. Where there are naughty children, there are naughty parents.
Seeing that Xu Mengyao no longer responded to him, the little boy became even more excited and continued to shoot at her "biu biu biu" while muttering "I'll kill you". The noise made her head hurt, and she was so angry that she took out a small piece of toilet paper from her bag, blocked her ears, lay down and closed her eyes.
The little boy's mother saw this and said, "Oh, why are you sleeping in the middle of the day? The child is playing with you."
Xu Mengyao immediately turned her back to them, muttering to herself: Don’t be angry, don’t be angry, don’t listen to what those two bastards say.
The train rattled along, and soon arrived at the next station. A young mother and daughter boarded. The girl, about three or four years old, was fair-skinned and had two cute pigtails.
Her mother carried her to the middle bunk and gently put her and her luggage down. The little girl saw the little boy next to her and reached out to greet him, "Brother..."
But the little boy impatiently shook off her hand: "Go away, I'm not your brother, don't touch my things!" His voice was full of disgust.
The girl's mother quickly picked up her daughter. The little girl pouted in grievance, tears in her big eyes, and her brows wrinkled: "Brother... beat me T^T... and didn't want to play with me...." She hugged her mother's neck tightly, buried her face in her mother's shoulder, and spoke in a low voice.
"It's okay, Niuniu. Maybe your brother is not very happy today. Can mommy play with you?" The little girl's mother comforted her child gently, but her face looked not so good anymore. She turned her gaze to the mother and child.
The little boy's mother didn't care and said, "My son's toy is very valuable. It's imported from abroad."
"You guys sit here first." Xu Mengyao sat up and made room on the bed for the mother and daughter.
"Thank you." The little girl's mother said gratefully.
"Little sister, your little leather shoes are so beautiful."
When the little girl heard this, she looked up, her big eyes filled with joy.
"Oh, you are very beautiful. Here are some cookies for you." As she said that, Xu Mengyao took out a bag of cookies from her backpack and handed them to the little girl.
The little girl looked at her mother and took the biscuits from Xu Mengyao after getting permission:
"Thank you, sister. You are so pretty too."
Xu Mengyao touched the girl's head, and the little girl's mother gave her a grateful smile:
