The sun shone all over Wuxing Road. Xu Mengyao and her friends and Chen Chen prepared their gifts and came to the small villa.
Unexpectedly, my uncle and aunt had already arrived and were busy in the yard.
"Uncle, aunt, why are you here so early? What are you doing here?" Xu Mengyao asked curiously as she approached.
My uncle smiled innocently and replied, "We thought we'd come over early to help, but we found out the house was already cleaned. Maomao said he wanted to raise a rabbit, and since we had nothing else to do, we built him a rabbit hutch."
"Hey, what a coincidence! Look what this is."
As Xu Mengyao spoke, she carefully pulled out two rabbits from her cloth bag, one pure white and the other gray. Maomao screamed with excitement when he saw them. He first picked up the white rabbit, gently stroking its soft fur, then reached out to touch the gray rabbit.
"Woof."
Suddenly, the clear barking of a dog broke the silence.
"Wow, this rabbit is amazing! It can even bark like a dog." My aunt said in surprise.
Xu Mengyao couldn't help but burst out laughing when she heard this. Chen Chen opened the pet box in his hand, revealing a puppy with shiny black fur. The puppy had round, deep eyes, and only its mouth and limbs were brown. As soon as it was released, it ran happily around on the ground.
"Wow, this dog is so beautiful. Look how shiny its fur is." Grandma Qi praised.
"Our dog gave birth to a few puppies last month. I heard Wenjuan say that Maomao likes small animals, so I thought of sending one over for Maomao to raise. It can also help you guard the house. This is a Doberman Pinscher, very loyal and sensitive." Chen Chen said to Grandma Qi.
"Oh, that's great, Xiao Chen, you've really taken a lot of trouble. We are two old people and we are a little scared to move to a bigger yard suddenly. This dog comes just in time." Grandma Qi said gratefully.
"Uncle, I'll have to trouble you to build a bigger doghouse. This pair of rabbits can't be kept together with the dog. Just keep them in a pet box on the terrace." Xu Mengyao said as she walked upstairs.
Maomao followed her all the time, constantly asking, "Why can't they be together? They can be good friends."
"Rabbits are timid and can easily be scared to death if left with dogs. You also want them to stay with you longer, right?" Xu Mengyao stopped, looked at Maomao gently, and explained patiently.
Maomao finally understood and nodded heavily.
Inside the restaurant, steam rose from the pots on the stove, and the air was filled with the aroma of food. The cook was surprisingly my cousin, Datou, and beside him stood a short-haired girl, intently helping him. "Bighead, long time no see," Xu Mengyao said with a smile.
When Datou heard the sound, he immediately turned down the heat and walked quickly towards Xu Mengyao, wiping his hands on his apron.
"Hey, Juan." He greeted her warmly, a hint of excitement in his eyes, "Brother has been wanting to come and thank you, I..."
"Don't talk about that, Big Head Brother, who is this girl?" Xu Mengyao interrupted him and asked curiously.
Datou scratched his head and said shyly, "Oh, this is Xu Li, um, my girlfriend. She came here to help me today."
Xu Li heard their conversation and came over. She smiled and extended her hand to Xu Mengyao: "Hello, sister. I often hear Datou and my uncle and aunt mention you."
Xu Mengyao responded politely: "Hello, Sister Xu Li, then you guys go ahead and do your work, I'll put the rabbit over there."
Lunch time was approaching, and at noon, Huang Shaocai hurried over, carrying bags of gifts, and rang the doorbell.
Xu Mengyao opened the door and said, "Fourth Uncle, you are such a busy man. I don't see you every day. Everyone is waiting for you to serve dinner."
Huang Shao handed her the item in his right hand while untying his tie, looking a little tired.
"Oh, I've been so busy these past few days. Didn't everyone else go back to Beijing to take care of your house? I'm the only one left here to finish it. Luckily, I told them that they don't want old, dilapidated, or small houses in bad locations, which would give them a headache. Do you want to come back to Beijing with me to take a look?"
"Really? That's great!" Xu Mengyao's eyes flashed with excitement, "But I have to go home first."
Huang Shao nodded and said, "Okay, I'll be done tomorrow and take you back the day after tomorrow morning. Zhang Chengli called me and said that a Taiwanese businessman saw the music video that Wen Rong starred in and wanted to ask her to shoot a commercial. He asked if she had time."
"Summer vacation should be around the corner. I'll call my eldest sister to let her know in the evening," said Xu Mengyao.
--
On a summer afternoon in Huanshi, the sun was high in the sky, and people were hurrying along the streets. Huang Wenrong had just left school, his mind on his sister. Tomorrow was finals day, and Wenjuan hadn't returned yet. Seeing Teacher Zhou's expression, which often seemed to be hesitant to speak, he could only choose to ignore her.
Teacher Zhou watched Huang Wenrong and Zhang Xiaomei concentrate on their studies every day, seemingly unaffected by Huang Wenjuan's absence. Outside the school gates, the Huang family was busy with their business every day, and he seemed to be the only one worried about the recovery of a patient at home.
After school at noon, Mr. Zhou came straight to the door of Huang's mother's shop. When Huang's mother saw Mr. Zhou, she immediately stopped what she was doing.
"Teacher Zhou, why are you here?" Huang's mother asked, a little surprised.
Teacher Zhou spoke gently, "Mother Huang, how is Wenjuan's health? She has the final exam tomorrow. Can she come and take it? The children will take the college entrance examination next year. I think we teachers and parents should pay more attention to the children.
Is she home now? I want to go see her. Ultimately, I haven't done my job well enough. I should have gone to your house to tutor her a long time ago."
Teacher Zhou's words caught Huang's mother off guard. She blushed and stammered, "She, she..."
At this time, Huang Wenrong came out from behind and immediately stepped forward to help:
"Teacher Zhou, thank you for your concern. It takes a hundred days to heal a broken bone. Wenjuan broke her waist and can only rest in bed. As you can see, our family is busy and can't take good care of her. My father took her to the mine a while ago, and my grandmother is taking good care of her. Don't worry, Xiaomei and I will give her tutoring during the summer vacation. We apologize for your concern."
After hearing what Huang Wenrong said, Teacher Zhou's expression eased a little, but he still reminded her, "Okay, if you have any questions, you can call me during the holidays."
After watching Teacher Zhou leave, Huang's mother breathed a sigh of relief and turned to Huang Wenrong and said:
"Phew, I was so scared! Luckily you came in time, otherwise I really don't know how to make up for this lie. Why hasn't your sister come back yet?"
Huang Wenrong also looked helpless: "Mom, don't be angry, she should be back soon."
