Chapter 7: The Scholar Who Even Dogs Would Look Twice

From that day on, Xu Mengyao began her journey of striving for progress and studying hard, or at least that's what everyone thought. Besides exercising and working, she would study hard every day.

In the mornings, she would read the text aloud in the yard. Her voice was so loud that even her chickens were ashamed of themselves.

After lunch, I had to make my presence felt before Huang's mother took a nap, sitting in the main room and writing and drawing on a book.

In the evening after school, she would take a small stool and sit in front of the Huang family's gate, reading a book while waiting for Huang's mother. She looked so focused that even the passing dogs couldn't help but look at her a few more times.

In just a few days, word spread throughout the village: "Oh, this second daughter of the Huang family has really changed. She loves studying so much, she will definitely be a college student in the future!"

Aunt Yang, who loved working with Huang's mother, said enviously:

"Mrs. Huang is a blessed woman. All her children are so beautiful and promising. She will enjoy a happy life in the future."

The aunts who worked with Huang's mother also cast envious glances at her.

Huang's mother was so happy. Her second daughter used to be as dull as a gourd, but now she has become so lively and loves to study, and even knows to call her dad.

Now she has become the king of children in the village. A group of little kids surround her all day long, and even her little daughter has become fond of studying.

Of course, Huang Wenjuan doesn’t just work hard at home. At school, she is also regarded as a learning star by her teachers.

The teacher of ideology and morality said: "This child knows how to learn. She attends class seriously every day. Every time I look at the students, her eyes are the most open, and they are full of the light of curiosity."

"Yes, yes, this kid has finally caught on. He studies hard and asks questions after class." The Chinese teacher followed closely behind.

The math teacher agreed proudly: "That's right, I gave a test to the children in the class, and she was the only one who got full marks."

Physical Education Teacher: "...Uh, this kid is really strong..."

What made Xu Mengyao even more excited was that she was chosen by her teacher to represent the school in the town math competition. This was a great opportunity to show off!

She was secretly delighted: "For an undergraduate like me, this elementary school math test is a piece of cake!" She had to seize this opportunity to prove herself in front of her family.

She told the teacher confidently that she would perform well and bring honor to the school.

At around five o'clock in the morning on the day of the exam, Huang's mother was busy preparing breakfast for Xu Mengyao. She even cooked two eggs and put them in her pocket, telling her to eat when she was hungry, study hard, and listen to the teacher.

With excitement and anticipation, Xu Mengyao followed her teacher on the road to the town.

We arrived in town at exactly eight o'clock, and the exam competition started at nine o'clock. After a short rest under a tree, we were taken to a classroom for the exam.

There were more than a dozen children and two invigilators sitting in the classroom. After the exam started, she took the test paper and quickly glanced through it. There were a total of 18 questions, including mental arithmetic, formula writing, finding the unknown variable x and eight application problems.

She answered the questions attentively and finished the test paper in a short while, and checked it carefully twice.

As it was still early, she lay on the table and observed the other children who were answering questions. She saw that some of them were thinking with frowns and biting pencils, while others were writing and drawing on the table with pursed lips. It was quite interesting. While watching, she fell asleep.

After the exam, the results were announced quickly. Unsurprisingly, she scored full marks and received a certificate and a big red flower.

The teacher who put the flower on her was the one who had just invigilated the exam. He smiled and said:

"Huang Wenjuan, you won first place in our town's math competition. Next week you'll represent our town in the county competition. I wish you good results, and don't fall asleep again."

Xu Mengyao nodded embarrassedly.

When she returned home, she was already starving. Huang's mother was standing at the door waiting for her. As soon as she saw her, she hurriedly said:

"You must be starving! There's food in the pot for you. Come on and eat!"

Xu Mengyao took out the certificate from her schoolbag and said to Huang's mother with a smile:

"Mom, I got first place in the exam, and I'm going to represent our town in the county competition next week!"

Huang's mother was so excited that she kept calling Huang's father to come out and look at the certificate. Huang's father looked at the certificate for a long time, smiled and patted her shoulder and said:

"Study hard, your mother and I will support you in college."

She nodded heavily, took the bowl of rice brought by Huang's mother, and started eating in big mouthfuls.

After Wenxia woke up, he walked around her and touched the big red flower curiously. She took off the big red flower and put it on Wenxia. The little guy was very happy and rushed out of the house to show off.

Soon, the news spread like wildfire in the village. The second daughter of the Huang family won the first place in the town exam and would go to the county to participate in the competition next week.

The aunts and sisters who lived not far away came to the door of Huang's house, surrounded Huang's mother, and their words were full of admiration and envy.

"Wenjuan is an amazing child. How could she be so smart that she could get the first place in the exam!" an aunt said with a smile.

"That's right! Compared with Wenjuan, my little brat has learned nothing!" another old lady also sighed.

"It seems like a golden phoenix is about to fly out of our Huang family!"

The eldest aunt praised directly, and at the same time took out two pieces of peach cake from her pocket and handed them to Huang's mother.

"Give Wenjuan a taste. This is a little gift from her aunt."

Huang's mother smiled broadly and thanked him while accepting the peach cake. However, this warm and harmonious atmosphere was broken by a discordant voice.

"Hmph, what kind of phoenix can fly out of a chicken coop? If there is one, it will belong to someone else's family." Xie Dongmei said sarcastically. Her words were like a basin of cold water, instantly extinguishing everyone's enthusiasm.
