Huang's mother stood there nervously, her hands clenched, looking a little uneasy. Meanwhile, Xu Mengyao boldly opened the lid of her backpack, pulled out a plump chicken, and shouted, "Don't miss this if you're passing by! This is a genuine country hen, with delicious and nutritious meat. Buy one to take home and nourish your family!"
Her voice was clear and powerful, immediately attracting the attention of the surrounding workers. Seeing this, Huang's mother, although still nervous, was also infected by her daughter's enthusiasm and gradually relaxed.
After a while, a young man came over and curiously asked about the price. She smiled and replied, "Uncle, I sell these chickens individually, three yuan each. Since you're the first one to buy, I can give you two extra eggs."
The young man looked at the chicken in Xu Mengyao's hand, which weighed about four pounds. He thought it was worth the money, so he didn't bargain. "Little girl, you're really good at talking. I'll buy one then."
She readily picked out the heaviest chicken and handed it to the young man, placing two eggs in his hands. The surrounding workers gathered around, vying to buy. Huang's mother, seeing this, also hurried to help collect the money and pass the eggs.
In less than five minutes, all five chickens were sold out. Only one basket of eggs was left. A fat woman who hadn't bought a chicken came over and said, "The chickens are gone, give me all the eggs in this basket."
Xu Mengyao smiled and replied, "Auntie is really straightforward. Eggs are two cents each, and there are 121 left, which is two dollars and forty-two cents in total. Just give me two dollars and forty, and I'll give you the basket as well."
The fat woman counted the eggs, paid for them and left satisfied.
Huang's mother couldn't believe how quickly the items were sold out. She returned home, looking at the 17.40 yuan in her hand. She patted Xu Mengyao's head, choked up, and said, "My daughter is so capable." Then she hurried back to her parents' home.
Xu Mengyao lay in bed, feeling elated. She thought that this chicken-selling experience had not only earned her money but also improved her standing in her mother's heart. She thought her mother wouldn't object to anything she wanted to do in the future.
