Chapter 45 Searching for Salt Mines in the Mountains

Su Muyao accepted the red envelope and happily stuffed it into her pocket.

I know this family is struggling financially, but my mother still makes sure to give red envelopes to my cousins.

If I don't accept it, they'll feel even more embarrassed if they do, so of course I have to accept it.

"Oh, Grandma's sweetheart, come and eat!"

The old lady held Su Muyao tightly, refusing to let go. The little old lady then used a spoon to scoop up egg custard and put it into the little girl's bowl.

"My sweet baby, try it, it's delicious."

As he spoke, he scooped a spoonful from the bowl and held it to Su Muyao's lips.

The smooth and soft texture of the steamed egg custard made Su Muyao's eyes light up.

I must say, the eggs from ancient times were really delicious; they were fragrant and had no fishy smell.

The taste of all-natural food is just different.

And the green vegetables in that bowl looked like wild vegetables in a cold salad. I took a bite, and it tasted a little bitter, but not the bitterness of vegetables.

As Su Muyao chewed, she muttered to herself that the taste was very similar to the slight bitterness her grandmother used to add to the fried pork cracklings.

Then I noticed that the other pot contained a stew of radish and cabbage.

I picked up a piece with my chopsticks and put it in my mouth. This thing was basically boiled in plain water. Apart from a little salt, it had no other taste, and the salt even seemed to have a slightly bitter taste.

I carefully recalled the large, slightly yellow coarse salt in Grandma Su's salt shaker when she was at home.

However, the salt here is clearly more turbid and contains more impurities, otherwise it wouldn't taste so bitter.

The meal ended quickly and everyone devoured it.

Su Muyao's mind was now completely focused on getting back and starting to refine salt.

Although the salt we use at home is all taken from my own space, the salt used in the village and in my maternal grandparents' homes is still coarse salt with many impurities.

No wonder the average lifespan of people in ancient times was so short; it seems that salt accounted for a large part of the reason.

I spent the afternoon playing wildly in the village with my cousins. Dinner was simple: just wild vegetable soup and flatbread.

Similarly, I have a small bowl of steamed egg custard that belongs to me alone.

Apart from himself and Su Mingxuan, everyone else was eating the wild vegetable soup on the table with flatbread.

Even the youngest son of the third aunt was obediently eating the pancake in his hand.

Su Muyao broke off a piece of the pancake from her mother's hand, took a bite, and found it hard and difficult to swallow.

The flatbread was probably made from sorghum that hadn't been hulled, ground up together and made into a dry food flatbread.

The food the Wang family was eating was considered normal in the village; some families couldn't even get their hands on such flatbread.

Many people still eat wild vegetable porridge, while those who are slightly better off eat mixed grain porridge.

But the family ate as if it were commonplace, and the children devoured their food as if it were some extraordinary delicacy.

Looking at the small bowl of steamed egg custard in front of her, her eyes reddened.

"Sweethearts, this is for you. You're too small to eat this pancake and eggs."

As she spoke, the old lady of the Wang family handed Su Mingxuan a boiled egg.

He tapped the other one on the table, gently wrapped it in its shell, and then handed it to Su Muyao, who was sitting in front of him.

Everyone saw that the little dumpling was staring at the peeled egg in her hand, not making any further moves, and no one knew what was wrong with her.

Su Muyao then broke the peeled eggs in half and placed them in her maternal grandfather's and maternal grandmother's bowls respectively.

The elderly couple saw that this wouldn't do, so they picked it all up and put it back into the milk dumpling's bowl.

"Grandpa and Grandma, you eat. I can eat this every day at home."

The old lady affectionately stroked the baby's soft hair.

"That's good. Our little darling needs to eat more so he can grow taller. Look at this little face." Saying that, he gave the little dumpling a kiss on the cheek.

The elderly couple adored their little girl and learned from her that their son-in-law had brought her home from outside.

Although she was adopted, everyone in the Su family loved this little girl.

Looking at it this way, not only do they like it, but I like it too. This rosy little face looks just like the chubby baby holding a carp in the New Year's painting.

The dinner was so hard that Su Muyao felt a pain in her chest until midnight; the pancakes were just too hard.

This meal here made her fully realize the hardships of life for farmers in ancient times.

In the Su family, I secretly smuggled all sorts of things out since I was born, and the family's meals gradually improved, so I never suffered any hardship.

She slept soundly through the night. In the morning, her father got up early, busied himself around for a while, and then took Su Muyao and Su Mingxuan home.

After returning home, the little dumpling insisted on dragging Su Laosan to the mountain.

I still remember the salt sesame that the white wolf gave me; wherever there is that stuff, there must be a salt mine nearby.

Su Sanlang lingered on the edge of the deep mountains with his little dumpling, but he really didn't have the courage to go in. Although he had been there once before, it was only because two tigers led the way.

Who knows if there are other wild animals in these deep mountains? And not all wild animals know his little girl. Looking at his daughter who kept urging him in his arms, he was caught in a dilemma. What should he do?

Before long, Su Muyao was greeted by a wolf cub.

They looked to be only one or two months old. I scooped the wolf cub off the ground and put it in my arms.

And you know what? This little wolf cub is quite chubby and has some weight to it.

Before long, the wolf king arrived. After inquiring, he learned that this was his cub who had somehow escaped.

When they finally arrived, following the scent of the little cub, they discovered that the cub's scent was actually the same as that of a human infant.

"Awooo"

"Awoo~ Awoo~ Awoo"

Upon hearing the big wolf and the little wolf howling at him, Su Sanlang quickly took the little wolf out of his daughter's arms and returned it to the wolf king.

Simply placing the wolf cub in front of the wolf king caused it to run right up to Su Muyao.

"Since you like me so much, then you can follow me from now on."

Upon hearing this, the wolf king could only secretly envy his own cub.

Following a human cub means you'll never have to worry about food or drink, and most importantly, the delicious elixir will likely be your cub's greatest fortune in the future.

"Do you remember the location of those two big mushrooms you gave me last time? Take me there to see them."

The white wolf nodded, and Su Muyao followed behind, slowly walking into the deep mountains.

After wandering around for a long time, I finally saw my destination on a high place.

Most importantly, they actually found four or five more salt mushrooms.
