Chapter 2 City

When I arrived at the family compound gate and stood by the roadside waiting for the shuttle bus, there were two people who were also waiting for the shuttle bus. When they saw Xie Yun coming, they asked, "Xiao Yun, are you feeling better?"

"Hello, Auntie, I'm much better now."

"That's good. If you need any work, just tell me and I'll help you. Don't exhaust yourself."

"Okay, thank you, auntie."

"Thank you, the bus is here, get in."

Just then the shuttle bus arrived. I got on the bus, paid 5 cents for the fare, found a seat by the window, sat down, and looked out the window.

The aunt who just spoke was the wife of my father's comrade-in-arms. She had visited the original owner twice after my parents' accident. Several other aunts had also visited, as had my father's comrades-in-arms and superiors.

After about 20 minutes, the car arrived in the city. The road was bumpy and full of potholes, and I was so glad I didn't get carsick. After getting off the car, I said hello to my aunt and went to look for the house. After asking two people, I finally found it.

Xie Yun was delighted to see the small courtyard before her. This courtyard would be very valuable in the future. She took out her key, opened the door, and went inside. She checked each room to see if there was any furniture. In the woodshed were several bundles of firewood and a pile of honeycomb coal. The bedroom and kitchen were covered in dust. There was a well and a small vegetable garden in the yard, and the toilet was in a corner. It was July, and the fields had been planted with vegetables. Since no one had tended them, a lot of weeds had grown.

I took out a basin and a rag, drew a basin of water from the well, and started cleaning.

An hour later, Xie Yun straightened up and looked at the cleaned room, feeling relieved. Once the pension came in, she would just find a car to bring her things over.

She looked up to see that it was already noon, so she grabbed a bowl of spicy hot pot and a bowl of rice from her space and started eating. The spicy hot pot was still so delicious, thanks to her past life when she loved it. She would buy more and save it in her space when she saw something delicious. Now, she could just take it out and eat it whenever she wanted. She would also make more and save it in her space when she had time.

After dinner, I weeded the vegetable patch, picked some greens, and headed back home. I got on the bus to work. This time, I didn't run into the two aunties, so I went straight home. I lay in bed for a while before cooking dinner. It was a simple meal, just enough to show others cooking. After dinner, I soaked in the hot springs in my space before coming out to sleep.

The next morning, after washing up, I made some preserved egg and lean meat porridge, mixed some spinach, took some pickles and boiled some eggs. I made more of everything except the pickles, and put the leftovers from this meal in the space.

Just after finishing the meal and cleaning up, there was a knock on the door. Xie Yun hurried out to open the door and saw three middle-aged soldiers coming in. When she saw that it was her father's leader and comrade-in-arms, Uncle Wang, she quickly opened the door and invited them in.

Uncle Wang's eyes welled up when he saw Xie Yun, thinking of her father. They'd come to give Xie Yun a pension, 3,000 yuan in total. Because Xie Yun wasn't yet an adult, they'd negotiated for her to receive 30 yuan a month, 30 kilograms of food coupons, some food coupons, and two industrial coupons, starting this month. This would last until she reached adulthood. Normally, these wouldn't be granted, but Xie Yun didn't know that her father had also saved a high-ranking official during this mission, and that official had secured all of this.

Xie Yun tearfully thanked Uncle Wang and the leader. The leader said that if she had any problems, she could tell them and they would do their best to help her solve them. Xie Yun thanked the leader and said that she had nothing to worry about at the moment. After the leader left, Uncle Wang asked her, "Xiao Yun, what are your plans for the future? You have graduated from high school now. Uncle Wang can help you find out which factories are hiring. Or are you thinking of looking for a job later? The leader said that you can live in this house first."

"Thank you, Uncle Wang. My parents are martyrs. I also want to respond to the country's call and go to the vast rural areas to work hard for the country's development."

"You want to be an educated youth? Xiaoyun, your idea is good, but you are still a child. I'm not saying that being an educated youth is bad, but it will be very hard and tiring. You may not be able to return to the city for a long time."

"Uncle Wang, I know everything you said. I'm not afraid of hard work. Although I'm still young, I also want to contribute to the development of the country."

"Xiaoyun, please think about it carefully."

"Uncle Wang, I have thought about it for the past two days. My parents are heroes and I can't let them down. I also want to be a useful person to the country." Well, although I am lazy physically, my thoughts are very progressive.

"If you really decide to go to the countryside, uncle will see if he can find someone to find you a better place."

"Uncle Wang, I want to go to Heilongjiang Province."

"Xiao Yun, it's too cold in Heilongjiang Province. You have to think carefully. The winter there is much colder than here. You can get frostbite if you are not careful."

"Uncle Wang, I've made up my mind. I can wear something warmer when I get there. I'll go sign up tomorrow and start preparing the things I'll need for the trip to the countryside."

"I'll go with you to register tomorrow, and then I'll get you some cotton so your aunt can make you some thicker cotton-padded clothes, trousers, and bedding."

"No need, Uncle Wang. I'll just buy some cotton and cloth myself and ask Auntie to teach me when the time comes." She really didn't know how to make clothes. In modern times, people would buy ready-made ones. She didn't expect that she could travel through time and space. The original owner also didn't know how to make clothes.

"Don't argue with me about this. Just follow and learn from your aunt. I'll go back first. I'll pick you up tomorrow morning. Just wait for me at home." After saying that, Uncle Wang got up and left.

"Okay, Uncle Wang, I'll wait for you tomorrow morning." I sent Uncle Wang to the door, and then closed the door and went back to the house after seeing Uncle Wang going home.

Since the house is still available, I put the unused items in the space. The bed, wardrobe, and water tank are all in the house in the city. The leftover food and seasonings are stored in the space. I send some bacon to Uncle Wang's house, and take the pickles and dried vegetables from home to Uncle Wang's house. She still prefers fresh food.

When you get to the countryside, it's best to live on your own. That way, you can do whatever you want and eat whatever you want. Living with others would be too inconvenient.

In my previous life, I read novels where everyone lived together in a big dormitory and ate from a big pot. There was no privacy at all, which was scary to think about.

After packing for a while, I took out all the tickets and looked at what they were. I put the local tickets and those about to expire together so I could use them all up in the next few days. I also put the national tickets in my personal space and would take them out when I needed them. I also put my family's ID cards in my personal space. I put away the things my parents had used, just as souvenirs.

I looked at the clock and it was almost one in the afternoon. I had a simple lunch and then went back to my room to lie down on the bed for a nap. When I woke up, it was already past 4pm. I slept so soundly.

I didn't feel like cooking dinner anymore, so I decided to just eat in the space. Once inside, I used my mind to gather the food, vegetables, fruits, and eggs, then planted the land. I also collected a batch of fish, shrimp, and crabs from the lake before returning to the house to eat.
