"Thank you, Xiao Ning, thank you so much for today. If it weren't for your medical skills, your aunt might have died here today."
Jianming's face was filled with gratitude.
"Dad, where are we going to stay tonight? We've lost the house, and I haven't eaten yet!" Jian Xueqing, who was standing next to her mother, saw that her mother was alright, and her stomach started growling.
So he pulled Jianming, who was laughing happily.
"Well, Anping, how about we stay at your place for a few days first? We can find another place to stay later." Jianming didn't seem embarrassed at all.
In his view, there was nothing wrong with him staying at his nephew's house; it was perfectly normal.
"No, the floor is too high. The old lady's health isn't suitable for moving. I think we should stay on this third floor."
You can just break into any house and move in. My brother will bring you some food later.
Jian Ning would never allow this family to live on the 16th floor. There are too many supplies up there; it's no wonder they'd be envious. They'd definitely refuse to leave.
"Xiao Ning, can you open this door? It's not proper to just walk into someone else's house!"
Jianming felt a little embarrassed after his niece rejected him outright.
But then I thought that the 16th floor was indeed too high, and it would be inconvenient to go back and forth. If the door could be opened, living downstairs wouldn't be a bad idea. I just don't know if the house is owned.
"The third floor is a bit low, and the house is flooded. It's probably uninhabitable right now. Let's go to the seventh floor. I'll carry the old lady up. The seventh floor is no problem."
As Jian Anping spoke, he squatted down in front of Li Cuilan.
Jian Ning thought what he said made sense, so she didn't object.
They quickly reached the seventh floor, and everyone's eyes turned to Jian Ning. She was the one who came up with the idea of opening the door, so now they were seeing what she could do.
This was no problem for her at all. She pressed a few numbers on the door lock, and with a beep, the door opened.
"Sister, you're amazing! You're even better than a locksmith!" Jian Jian's eyes lit up.
"Go in." Jian Ning ignored him, opened the door a little wider, and let Jian Anping carry Li Cuilan in.
The layout of this house is the same as Jian Anping's house, except that it doesn't have an attic.
The house was a complete mess, as if it had been robbed by a thief. Trash and clothes were scattered all over the living room floor.
The bedroom was alright, though. Jianming helped Li Cuilan lie down on the bed. The air was still stuffy, but at least they had a room to shelter them from the wind and rain.
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
"The windows can't be opened, there are too many flies and mosquitoes outside, and we need to check the drains to see if they're clogged."
"Jian, go take a look. Xueqing, tidy up the living room." Jian Anping now adopted the air of an older brother, giving orders.
Although somewhat reluctant, Jian Xueqing went out. Jian Ji'an returned shortly afterward.
"Bro, the toilet isn't clogged at all. I even saw a mouse peek out just now, so I quickly closed the toilet lid. What can I use to clog it?"
"Use cement. You guys clean up first. Xiao Ning and I will go back and get you some food and cement," Jian Anping said, pulling Jian Ning out of the house.
"Xiao Ning, I know you don't like your uncle's family, but they are still our relatives."
We can't be too ruthless. After all, Dad has connections; I won't be able to face him in the afterlife."
"Okay, I understand. I didn't say anything, did I?"
"But there's one thing, bro, you can help them, but you absolutely cannot let them go up to the 16th floor, or don't say I'll turn against you." This was Jian Ning's final bottom line.
“I know, brother, I’m not stupid. You don’t even have cement, so give them some. At least we can plug up the drains and make life possible before we talk about anything else.”
“Okay, you don’t need to go upstairs to get food, I have everything here.” Jian Ning waved her hand, and small bags of cement and sand appeared on the ground.
They also brought out a large bag of steamed buns and more than ten packets of pickled vegetables, and gave us two cases of bottled water.
"I don't know if we can cook inside, so let's give them these to eat for now."
"Xiao Ning, at least give him some sausages or something. Just eating pickled vegetables isn't right! Get him some more." Although food was indeed scarce, Jian Anping hadn't let him go hungry.
They feel the amount given is a bit too little. This shows they haven't experienced the harsh realities of life. They think back to their past lives, when a single steamed bun could buy them a woman to live with. And they still complain it's not enough.
But Jian Ning didn't say anything to him, and still took out two packs of ham sausages.
The two waited a while longer, estimating that it was about time, before carrying their things back to the seventh floor.
The room had at least been cleaned up a bit and didn't look so messy anymore. When Jian Anping brought over some steamed buns, Jian Xueqing quickly took the food from him.
"Thank you, brother. We only have drinking water. Do you have water for washing up?"
She certainly had a lot of demands. Jian Ning glared at her. Did she think they were staying in a hotel?
"I do have some melted snow water stored at home, but not much. I'll go upstairs and get some for you."
Jian Anping glanced at Jian Xueqing, who was covered in dust and dirt. She really should wash up; she couldn't eat like this.
"I'll go." Jian Ning couldn't bear to let Jian Anping climb back up to the sixteenth floor. She went out for a while, and after more than twenty minutes, she came back in carrying two large plastic buckets.
"We don't have much left at home, so please use these sparingly."
"Xiao Ning, thank you, we know. Tomorrow, Grandpa will go out and figure out a solution himself. We definitely won't trouble you with everything."
Jianming is a reasonable person. Now that Li Cuilan is in too much pain to speak, he can finally make a decision.
"Okay, then you guys take a break. We'll just use this cement and sand to clog the drain in a bit."
Throw all the trash outside as much as possible. Change the house code later, so if anyone knocks, no matter who it is, don't open the door.
Jian Anping gave another instruction.
"Okay, Anping, we really owe you and Xiaoning a lot today. Our family finally has a place to stay."
"Go home and rest," Jianming said with a smile as he saw the two of them out the door.
Once inside, the smile on his face disappeared considerably.
This nephew isn't as honest as he seems. This bag of steamed buns is enough for his family of four to eat for two days. Couldn't they have given him more?
He didn't give me any rice or flour, even though I remember him saying he bought a lot of supplies. This isn't his own son, after all; there's just a barrier between them.
If only his father were still alive, he would never bear to see his older brother starving.
