Chapter 121 Extinguishing the Fire

“You’re right. Food, clothing, shelter, and transportation are the most important things in life. Now, only food and shelter are left. I see quite a few people who don’t have clothes to wear. You can see people walking outside shirtless from inside the building.”

As Aunt Li spoke, she pushed the plate of steamed buns toward Jian Ning.

"Xiao Ning, eat quickly, it's not hot anymore."

"Okay, thank you, Auntie." Jian Ning didn't stand on ceremony and picked up the steamed bun and ate it in big bites.

After dinner, Li Mengyao underwent a simple check-up, including listening to the baby's heartbeat, and everything seemed normal, which put her at ease.

"I'm going out to check. Be careful when you walk on the ground, don't fall."

"Here, take this talisman. If you're about to give birth and I'm not home, just tear it open and I'll be back soon." Jian Ning said, handing a talisman to Li Mengyao.

"Is it really that amazing? Did you get it from a Taoist temple? I'll definitely keep it safe."

Li Mengyao asked a couple of questions, then suddenly realized she didn't need to ask, and carefully placed the bag under her pillow.

"Don't worry, sister-in-law, it will definitely work. I won't go far, I'll just wander around this building for a bit and take a look."

As Jian Ning spoke, she opened the door and went out. Even though it was broad daylight, she didn't go through the wall, since people outside were starting to move around.

It's best to avoid doing things that are shocking or outrageous.

I walked down the stairs to the first floor. Stepping on the smelly, dried mud was quite a novel experience.

I hadn't gone far from the building entrance when two people approached me. They looked like a mother and daughter, each carrying something. The younger one was carrying a ten-pound white plastic bucket.

Seeing Jian Ning approaching, they stopped in their tracks, quite warily. Only after Jian Ning had passed did the mother and daughter quicken their pace towards home. Their behavior clearly showed...

The outside world is not peaceful. Indeed, after enduring a year, few families are not lacking in supplies, and there must be quite a few people who want to get something for nothing and become bandits.

As I walked out of the community gate, I saw several red banners with black characters stretched across the road.

The notice above was for the citizens, explaining where to collect supplies and the exchange rates for various items. Only a human could come up with such an advertising strategy.

People were still searching through the collapsed building. There were also teenagers, shirtless and tanned, looking almost like Africans.

In such a dangerous place, who would risk their life unless absolutely necessary?

Jian Ning sighed, did not go far, bypassed the rotting corpses on the ground, and returned to Jinmao Mansion.

Without looking up, she knew Aunt Li was watching down from upstairs, and there were quite a few people in the other windows as well. Instead of going upstairs, she walked to the back of the complex. There, surprisingly, were quite a few more graves.

I don't know who buried their deceased relatives in the community.

However, this is still better than leaving it exposed, at least it won't attract flies and maggots.

Jian Ning hadn't finished walking around the neighborhood when she suddenly heard someone shout, "Fire! Fire!"

She turned her head and saw thick black smoke billowing from a building not far away. Indeed, with the weather so hot and no rain, the possibility of a fire was extremely high.

Even now, no fire department has come to rescue us. If this fire starts, won't it affect the whole neighborhood?

Jian Ning hadn't originally planned to get involved, but seeing that the burning building was quite close to hers,

For the safety of Li Mengyao and the others, she used an invisibility spell, stepped on her flying sword, and whooshed into the air.

I went directly to the top of the burning building and looked up to see that the fire started on the third floor and had now spread to the exterior wall insulation.

It appears that the exterior wall insulation wasn't made of fire-resistant materials. Furthermore, it seems to be a curtain wall structure without fireproofing. That's why the fire spread so quickly.

The red flames mixed with billowing black smoke reached the roof in the blink of an eye.

To put out the fire now, she would have to release the water from the spatial stream. Otherwise, it would be almost impossible with her water ball technique alone.

A large crowd had gathered some distance below, all helpless. Even in peacetime, a fire this big wouldn't be enough to extinguish even with dozens of fire trucks.

Without hesitation, not for anyone else's sake, but knowing that the fire would inevitably spread to her building if it continued to burn like this, Jian Ning ascended further on her sword, then waved her hand.

The water in the stream inside the space poured down like a waterfall. The raging fire suddenly stopped, as if it had been stunned by the sudden pour of water.

"What's that? It's not raining at all. Has God opened his eyes and come to put out the fire?"

Those watching the spectacle downstairs with sharp eyes noticed the sudden appearance of a waterfall-like torrent in the sky and assumed it was a miracle. Some even knelt on the ground and began to pray.

Jian Ning didn't care what they thought. She used her spiritual power to control the water and poured it on the areas with open flames.

She felt bad about using even a little extra water. She tried to avoid wasting any, and the fire on the upper floor was quickly extinguished.

Jian Ning used his sword to lower himself and extinguished the fire all the way to the third floor. Only when there was no more flame visible did he finally breathe a sigh of relief.

The fire was out. The people inside rushed out, having genuinely thought they were about to perish there.

Whether anyone was injured or killed was not Jian Ning's concern.

Using his spiritual power to check the fire's origin within the building and confirming it couldn't reignite, he then used his invisibility to pass through the wall and return to the sixteenth floor, appearing directly at his own doorstep.

To my surprise, I saw Aunt Li and the others standing by the corridor window with their things, looking like they were ready to run away at any moment.

So he walked to the stairwell, removed his invisibility, and came out.

"Aunt Li, what are you doing?"

"Xiao Ning, you're finally back! The building next door is on fire, it scared us half to death."

Your sister-in-law just wanted to use that talisman to find you, but I didn't let her. It's not the most critical time yet, so we can't use it lightly.

Our building is too tall. I just discussed it with your uncle; if the fire spreads, it'll be too late to get downstairs. We'll have to go to the roof. Whether we survive or not is up to fate.

As it turned out, thank goodness, water came and extinguished the fire! Truly, there's always a way out! Amitabha Buddha, Bodhisattva protect us!

"Yes, I'm just wondering where this water comes from since there are no clouds in the sky?"

And the water fell with such precision! Could it be that some deity in heaven sent down water specifically to put out the fire?

Uncle Li has lived for almost sixty years and has never seen anything so strange. He kept muttering to himself, but couldn't find the right answer, so he could only attribute it to a miracle.
