Chapter 271 Getting Married

"It's better that she disappeared. People die every day these days, why do you care about her?"

The most important thing now is to try to survive. Have you been consistently practicing the skills I taught you? Don't relax; they can save your life in a critical moment.

"I'm doing this every day, so don't worry. I have to go back now. I have to cook lunch for myself. Come to my place tonight, and I'll cook something nice for you."

Cao Xue glanced at her watch, stood up, and started to walk out.

"Why don't you come over tonight? It's spacious here, and it's easy to cook."

Your dorm room is so cramped, there's barely any room to turn around. Don't leave at noon, it's not like you're short of food. I think Aunt Li is steaming some buns.

"No need, there's a food shortage right now. I'll come over tonight. I'll bring some vegetables and cured meat with me."

There wasn't much else of value.

Cao Xue felt embarrassed to have lunch there herself, as everyone was short of food, so she stood up, grabbed her umbrella, and went back. Jian Ning couldn't persuade her to stay.

When they came over in the evening, they not only brought cured meat, but also half a dried wild rabbit.

He said that he hunted it himself on the mountain when the area was being developed recently, but Jian Ning immediately doubted the credibility of this claim.

There's definitely wild game in the mountains, but even with her kung fu skills, Cao Xue would still need a bit of luck to catch a wild rabbit on her own. She asked with a smile, "Did someone help you? Rabbits aren't so easy to catch."

Upon hearing Jian Ning's question, Cao Xue blushed.

"Yes, I met a soldier in the army. When he was changing shifts, we went up the mountain together to catch wild rabbits. He said he wanted to give me some extra nutrition."

I didn't eat it all; I dried half of it and kept it. You know how precious meat is these days. Xiao Li is a very simple and honest person.

"It's a pity that although my living situation is more stable now, I still don't dare to think about getting married and starting a family. The future seems too uncertain." Cao Xue sighed as she spoke.

"You silly girl, you're too honest. It's not easy to find someone who truly cares for you these days, so why can't you get married? If you ask me, it's precisely because we live in the end times that we should cherish the present even more."

Nobody knows what tomorrow will bring. Enjoy each day as it comes; why waste precious time?

Are you going to keep him waiting? If he proposes to you, just say yes! The military will probably give you their blessings too.

"He did mention this; we could apply for a single dormitory room as our marital home. Two couples got married here this year; their weddings were simple, but very warm and loving."

I went too. It would be a lie to say I wasn't envious; it's precisely at times like these that you crave someone you can rely on.

"Then what are you still hesitating about?" Jian Ning asked, somewhat puzzled.

"Zhang Xiaoqiang has been harassing me. You have no idea what would happen if I really went through with a ceremony and got married to Xiao Li..."

He certainly won't let this go easily.

Cao Xue sighed. She had thought Zhang Xiaoqiang was someone she could entrust her life to, but it turned out he was completely unreliable. Now he was pestering her every day, wanting to get back together. It was really too upsetting.

"I've taught you all these skills for nothing. If he keeps bothering you, just beat him up. If once isn't enough, beat him up twice. You have to use violence to scare people like that, otherwise it'll never end."

"Will it work?" Cao Xue asked hesitantly.

"Why not? In this world, killing someone isn't illegal, so who's going to maintain order? You need to change your mindset and stop thinking of this as a peaceful era."

There's a set of survival rules in the apocalypse. You've been in the base longer than me, haven't you figured this out yet? Alright, that's enough, come and eat."

Jian Ning saw that Aunt Li had already prepared the meal in the kitchen and brought out a dish, so she quickly stood up to help. She wasn't much of a cook, but helping with setting the table was no problem.

Cao Xue wasn't in a good mood while eating; she was probably still thinking about what Jian Ning had said to her. Despite the table full of delicious food, she had no appetite.

When they finished eating and saw her off, Jian Ning called Ba Wang over.

“Cao Xue, if you’re worried that you can’t handle Zhang Xiaoqiang, I can lend you Bawang for two days to give you some courage. You don’t need to feed it; just let it come back to eat on its own when it’s mealtime.”

"Thank you, Jian Ning, but no need for now. I'll discuss it with Xiao Li. I wasn't originally planning to talk to him about this."

However, if Zhang Xiaoqiang's matter isn't resolved properly, even if I marry him, it will likely be a troublesome affair.

I just realized it too. It's like having a festering wound on your body; if you don't cut it out, healthy flesh won't grow back. I can't tolerate it like this anymore.

“That’s the right way to think. If you need any help, just ask. I can lend you my umbrella anytime.” Jian Ning smiled as she watched her walk out of the villa with her umbrella.

Watching her receding figure through the rain, a sudden surge of longing for Xiao Lingfeng welled up within me.

Cao Xue could take bold steps for love, so why couldn't she? Xiao Lingfeng had already left her a love letter confessing his feelings. She should reciprocate.

He turned around and strode back, exuding an indomitable spirit.

As soon as he entered the room, he grabbed Jian Anping's arm.

"Brother, I'm going to see Xiao Lingfeng tomorrow. You guys prepare at home, I'm going to marry him."

"What? Xiao Ning, are you out of your mind?" Jian Anping touched her forehead with his hand. She didn't have a fever, so why was she talking nonsense?

"What are you thinking? This isn't just a spur-of-the-moment decision. I'll go to his unit tomorrow morning to find him and try to come back within ten days to hold the wedding."

Let's set up the new house at Xiao Lingfeng's place. You and Uncle Li can do some simple renovations on the second floor these next couple of days. If you don't have time, it's fine without doing anything; I'm not picky.

"No, Xiao Ning, I don't object to you suddenly wanting to marry Xiao Lingfeng, but does he even know about it? You've just decided on the wedding all by yourself, isn't that a bit much?"

Jian Anping felt that his sister must have experienced some kind of trauma and wasn't thinking clearly.

"I'll go talk to him tomorrow, and he dares not disagree!" Jian Ning said, then strode upstairs, leaving Jian Anping downstairs watching her retreating figure, utterly bewildered.

"What's wrong? Anping, I heard Xiaoning say something about having a wedding. Is it true?" Aunt Li, who had been listening for a while, came over and asked.

"It should be. Judging from her expression, she doesn't seem to be joking, but this is a bit too frivolous, isn't it? Although I don't object to her being with Xiao Lingfeng, it can't be this sudden, without giving me any time to prepare!"

"What are you preparing? Oh my, this is great news, but supplies are so scarce right now..."

Where are we going to get bright red bedding? Wait, it seems you still have some red cloth left over from when you bought it years ago. Let me go look for it. Where is it? Is it enough to make a quilt cover?
