The rain lasted for two days before it subsided a bit, but it didn't completely stop. Looking out the window, everything was a vast expanse of water.
The government has dispatched inflatable boats carrying a large amount of disaster relief supplies to deliver them to each community.
Jian Ning also got a share. The vegetables were only potatoes and onions. The sweet potatoes and other vegetables that could be stored were soaked in water, and it was unclear which warehouse they had salvaged from.
Each household is allotted two jin of rice and two jin of wheat flour per person, based on the number of people in the household. Two jin of vegetables are also allocated per person.
The residents' group chat is in complete chaos right now. Some are cursing, some are complaining about being poor, some are saying that the food they've been given isn't enough, and some are asking to borrow life jackets to go to the supermarket to buy things.
Voice messages were flying everywhere. Jian Ning simply muted the group messages. Out of sight, out of mind.
Around 7 PM, the heavy rain started again, and it continued for a whole week without stopping. The sky looked like a huge funnel had been opened. It was relentless.
The news was constantly reporting on the disaster relief efforts across the country. The first to rush to the scene were firefighters and soldiers.
Watching them eat in the pouring rain and rescue the newlyweds from the air who were stuck in their car in the middle of the river was especially heartwarming.
At first, Xiao Liang from the property management company was still talking in the group chat, but he stopped responding yesterday. It's probably because the building was flooded, and the floodwaters have already reached the third floor.
Everyone was crowding upstairs; without elevator cards, they were climbing the stairs. They hadn't reached the 16th floor yet, as it was quite high.
SOS messages are everywhere online. The disaster is even more severe overseas, with some cities almost completely washed away by torrential rains.
Rivers breached their banks, flash floods erupted, and landslides occurred, making disaster relief and rescue efforts impossible to keep up with. The disasters and losses brought to people around the world by this torrential rain are incalculable.
Today, Jian Ning was no longer afraid to reveal her thoughts, so she picked up the walkie-talkie and called Jian Anping.
"Brother, come over here now, let's install a door in the stairwell."
"Why? There are several doors in this house, who could possibly break in?" Jian Anping asked, somewhat puzzled.
“The residents downstairs are all moving upstairs now. Brother, have you thought about this? If the rain stops in a few days and the water recedes, everything will be fine. But what if it keeps raining?”
What if it's a month or two later? They'll have no food and nowhere to live then, what do you think they'll do?
Upon hearing Jian Ning's words, Jian Anping shuddered.
Yes, he's at home with food and drink and doesn't feel anything, but this rain has been going on for almost half a month. The government has only sent relief food twice, and how many families are still able to survive?
Hunger can drive people mad; they'll band together and raid the sixteenth floor for food.
How many hands does one have to protect the safety of the elderly, women, and children in one's family? After all, two fists can't fight four hands. There are quite a few households in this building.
"Xiao Ning, wait for me, I'm coming right away." Holding the walkie-talkie, Jian Anping didn't even bother to change his shoes and ran out in his vest and floral shorts.
Jian Ning had already opened all the doors. She let him in and went to the attic to bring out the three fence gates that Er Gouzi had made.
"Brother, do you know how to install this?" Jian Ning brought him an electric drill from inside the house.
"I've never done this before, but I'll give it a try. It shouldn't be too difficult, right?"
Jian Anping frowned as he looked at the electric drill. He had never done this kind of work before. Collecting protection money and intimidating people was no problem for him. This was a bit of a challenge for him.
"I'll do it." The door to room 1603 opened at some point. Xiao Lingfeng stood in the doorway, still dressed in a black shirt and trousers. His name, "Jade Tree in the Wind," perfectly suited him.
"Brother, you must be Aunt Wang's son, right? Nice to meet you!" Jian Anping happily went over and shook hands with Xiao Lingfeng. It was so good to have someone who could do the work.
“Hello,” Xiao Lingfeng extended his hand to shake his, then turned to look at Jian Ning: “I heard you say on the walkie-talkie that you wanted to install a door. That’s a good idea.”
Upon receiving the praise, Jian Ning's face flushed red. She couldn't help it; her body's subconscious reaction was beyond her control.
"Then I'll trouble you. I'll give you a copy of the key later, so it won't delay you from going out." Jian Ning blushed and handed him the electric drill.
"You're welcome. With this door installed, we can all be safer. In fact, I'm the one who's benefiting from it."
Xiao Lingfeng smiled slightly, took the electric drill, and then carried another gate with one hand towards the stairs.
Jian Anping, who was standing next to him, was dumbfounded. This was too exciting.
You should know that Er Gouzi didn't cut corners at all with this door; it's all made of pure copper.
In addition, the door was covered with a dense array of iron nails, which were incredibly heavy. He had to use a lot of strength to move them all out.
He was lifted up and carried away with just one hand; he must be skilled in martial arts!
Needless to say, Jian Ning's eyes were fixed on the outline of Xiao Lingfeng's clearly defined muscles bulging from his shirt sleeves.
She silently wiped her mouth. How embarrassing! It's not like I've never seen a man before, why am I being so infatuated? My mouth is practically watering!
He quickly went back inside and grabbed an electric hammer and expansion bolts. He then ran all the way to the stairwell to deliver these tools.
Jian Anping can only assist Xiao Lingfeng now. Watching him operate skillfully, he almost thought that this person was a professional installation engineer, even better than Er Gouzi.
The three gates were not installed together; instead, they were sealed off at the entrance to the staircase on the 15th floor, with the last gate containing nails and electrical wires.
