Chapter 373 Departure

Liu Yan had no idea what Xiao Wuyu was thinking. He dawdled as he walked home. Before he even reached the door, he heard the old lady inside the house smashing things and cursing.

I wonder who in the family has offended her this time.

Liu Yan didn't intend to ask any questions and quietly wanted to go back inside. Little did he know that the old lady had very sharp eyes and had already spotted Liu Yan walking in with his head down out of the corner of her eye.

The old lady had been holding back a lot of anger lately.

The eldest son suddenly became obsessed with Liu Yan, whom he had always treated like a nanny or servant, and now he treats her like royalty.

While cooking today, I accidentally cut my hand with a kitchen knife and bled a lot. I didn't have any gauze or hemostatic medicine at home, so I could only tear a piece of cloth from my clothes to wrap it up.

He was already in a bad mood, and when he saw Liu Yan come back, he actually wanted to skip work and sneak into the house. How could that be allowed?

He rushed out of the house and grabbed Liu Yan's hair.

"You come here right now."

"Mom, what are you doing? Let go! Can't we talk this out? Why are you hitting me?"

Liu Yan was completely unprepared and was suddenly pulled back, nearly falling. Startled, she quickly covered her stomach with her hand, shouting for the old woman to let go.

"Tell me, you little rascal, what kind of love potion did you give my Da Gang? He's been acting completely different these past few days!"

The old lady was convinced that Liu Yan was behind it all; otherwise, her son wouldn't be acting like he was possessed. He practically worshipped her and repeatedly forbade her from bullying Liu Yan.

“Ask him yourself, why are you grabbing me? Mom, don’t think you can bully me just because no one else is home.”

Liu Yan struggled hard and managed to free her hair from the old woman's grasp. A small lock of hair was still pulled out, causing her to hiss in pain.

“Go cook. There’s no water left at home. Take a bucket and go to the river to fetch some water. You have no filial piety towards your elders at all. My husband Da Gang was blind to marry you.”

The old lady brought over a bucket and threw it at Liu Yan's feet.

“I’m not going. You know I’m pregnant and can’t carry heavy things. This is such a big bucket of water, can’t you let your second son fetch it? He just sits at home eating and doing nothing. He’s over twenty years old, doesn’t he get hot?”

Liu Yan will not be as obedient as before, doing whatever she is told.

"You little brat, you won't listen to me anymore! Don't try to scare me with the baby in your belly!"

"We don't even know whose child it is yet. It's only because my son doesn't care. If it were me, I would have divorced you long ago. Looking at your vixen-like face, you're obviously an immoral and unchaste woman."

The old lady's words made Liu Yan tremble with anger.

Pointing his finger at the old woman, he said, "Don't talk nonsense. How have I wronged your son? Whose child is this if not his?"

"Who knows? Look at you, you just arrived at the base and you've already hooked up with someone. You must have cheated on my son. Otherwise, would you have gotten such a good job as a teacher?"

There are countless people in the base who are more capable and educated than you. Why would they give you such a good job if you hadn't offered something in return?

Besides, your school principal clearly has ill intentions towards you. The way he looks at you is suspicious. Tell me, when did you two start dating?

"Mom, you need evidence to support your claims. Principal Xiao and I are completely innocent. School just started today, and we haven't even exchanged a few words yet. Who told you to spread rumors?"

“I saw it with my own eyes, what? You still don’t dare to admit it? A couple of days ago, before school started, you and he were moving things at the gate, chatting and laughing. How come you didn’t think about the fact that you were pregnant and that you couldn’t stretch your belly?”

The old lady felt she had caught Liu Yan red-handed.

From now on, it'll be easier to control her and make her work properly. Even if it's fabricated, we have to make this accusation against her seem plausible.

"Fine, okay, I won't argue with you about this, it's pointless." Liu Yan turned and walked into the house. This house was truly unbearable to stay in.

Since the old lady couldn't tolerate her, she might as well move out. She packed her simple belongings into a roll, carried it on her back, and headed out.

As soon as I reached the door, the old lady stopped me.

Where are you going?

"It's none of your business. Since this family can't accept me, I'll leave."

"You're dreaming. You can leave, but leave all your things behind. Once you're gone, it'll make room for someone else. There are plenty of pretty young women and wives in this base; we won't miss you."

"This is my own stuff, why should I leave it to you?"

Liu Yan pulled hard, broke free from the old lady, and ran towards the school.

She finally understood that with the old lady in the house, there was no way she could live a peaceful life.

Anyway, there are places to stay at school.

Wu Gang and she didn't have a marriage certificate or anything; they weren't husband and wife at all. Things are different now than when no one was watching on the streets; the garrison here is quite principled.

Wu Gang couldn't force her to go back.

"You little rascal, don't come back now that you're gone." After watching Liu Yan disappear in a flash, the old lady could only stomp her feet hard behind him, curse a few times, and then go back.

Xiao Wuyu was taking a walk on campus when he suddenly saw Liu Yan carrying a bag and running up breathlessly towards him, so he quickly went to meet him.

"What's wrong? What happened?"

"Principal Xiao, can I live at the school from now on?" Liu Yan put down his luggage and asked, catching his breath.

"Sure, there's a spare bedroom with a bed, but it might not be very convenient for you to stay here."

After all, I'm the only single man staying here at night in the whole school. If I stay here too long, people will start gossip.

"It's okay, I'm a woman and I'm not afraid, what are you afraid of?"

What era are we living in? It's the apocalypse; just surviving is a miracle. Who has time to care about these gossips?

Liu Yan didn't care at all. As long as she stopped hearing the old woman's cursing, she would feel better, and the child would suffer less.

"Since you think it's okay, then stay here. It's on the third floor, and the door isn't locked."

Xiao Wuyu was secretly overjoyed. This was such a great opportunity for him to get close to Liu Yan. Even the heavens were on his side.

"Thank you." Liu Yan was genuinely grateful. He took the keys and was about to bend down to pick up the luggage roll when Xiao Wuyu snatched it away first.

"I'll help you," she said, and without waiting for Liu Yan's objection, she picked up her luggage and headed upstairs.

Liu Yan stared at his tall, straight back for a moment, then sniffed and strode after him. Actually, she had acted somewhat impulsively when she ran out.
