Chapter 33 Driving Away the Two Families

Zhao Canchen stared at Lin Yajun with a worried expression, secretly thinking that the Ren family was no benevolent family and that he probably wouldn't live more than a few days after marrying into the family.

However, Lin Yajun is engaged to the eldest son of the Lin family and is also the witness at the marriage of the Prince of Song, which undoubtedly makes the matter more complicated.

If the Lin family breaks off the engagement and the Ren family disagrees, the Lin family members will be punished, and both Lin Yajun and the head of the family, Lin Daoyan, will be punished with one hundred strokes of the cane.

If the Ren family really comes to propose marriage, Lin Daoyan will probably have no choice but to marry his daughter to them.

Lin Daoyan paused for a moment, clearly realizing the trouble involved. He shook his head and said in a deep voice, "This marriage absolutely cannot continue; we must find a way to dissolve it."

Lin Songhao offered his opinion: "That day, my elder sister splashed the Ren family's big dog with green liquid in front of everyone. So even if he arranges a marriage for her, how could he easily let her go?"

“If he marries his sister, he will surely torment her, and might even beat her to death like he did with the second wife’s daughter.”

“That’s right.” Madam Xu nodded in deep agreement, and said with concern, “He will definitely beat and scold A-Jun until he’s dead.”

For a moment, the people in the room fell silent again, each racking their brains for a way to break off this unreliable marriage.

The three families in the west courtyard looked bewildered as they watched the second family move out overnight.

They didn't want to move, after all, this was where they had lived for many years, but the eldest son's family was forcing them to leave, which left them feeling helpless. Staying didn't seem to make any sense, but they were also really reluctant to leave.

Just then, the head of the family, Lin Daowei, rushed back from outside.

He looked exhausted as he walked into the courtyard, sighing repeatedly, "Alas, my second niece was murdered in vain!"

Upon hearing this, Madam He, the third wife, felt a sudden pang of anxiety and hurriedly asked, "Husband, has the beggar died?"

Lin Daowei nodded, sat down heavily, and then recounted the events to his wife and children.

“I had someone take the old woman who guarded the second gate of the Ren family to search around the beggars’ homes in the capital and ask them if they had seen a man with a full beard.”

Everyone listened quietly, not daring to utter a sound.

Lin Daowei continued, "As it turned out, an old beggar actually asked, 'Are you asking about the kid who got hit and killed by the carriage this afternoon?'"

Upon hearing this news, Constable Lin was extremely anxious. He immediately mounted his horse and galloped away like an arrow, his destination being the mortuary.

When he arrived at the mortuary with his men, the old woman at the second gate went in and looked at the body. Her face turned deathly pale instantly, and she cried out in terror, "It's him! It's him!" Her voice was filled with fear.

The old woman guarding the second gate was so frightened that she collapsed to the ground, her body trembling uncontrollably. She thought she was about to be silenced and that her life was about to end.

Upon hearing this, Madam He hurriedly asked, "Won't that old woman guarding the second gate be silenced?"

Lin Daowei shook his head. "No, she's safe."

Lin Jinche stood to the side, tilting his head, and asked curiously, "Father, why can't you?"

Lin Daowei lowered his voice and explained, "That person deliberately let her see that scene. If he wanted to silence her, he wouldn't have let her see and recognize the beggar."

He was still puzzled after hearing Lin Daowei's words. She pointed to the east and asked in a low voice, "Then who did this? Could it be someone from the eldest branch of the family?"

Lin Daowei shook his head again, denying He's guess: "That's impossible."

Although he had some guesses about the matter, he did not want to offend the Ren family easily because he lacked solid evidence, so he chose to remain silent and not express his thoughts.

Madam He looked at Lin Daowei with a worried expression and said softly, "Husband, we just came back from the Ren family. As soon as Mother and my eldest sister-in-law entered the courtyard, they suddenly ran to the eldest branch of the family and started crying and making a scene. Their commotion angered the people on the eldest branch, and without saying a word, they kicked us out of the house overnight."

"I don't know why, but the second wife moved out on her own initiative."

Ms. He spoke softly and recounted what had just happened.

As she spoke, she observed Lin Daowei's expression, noticing that his brows were furrowing more and more tightly, clearly indicating his great dissatisfaction with the matter.

After finishing her sentence, Madam He asked with some concern, "Husband, what should we do now? Should we move out tonight?"

The three branches of the family were utterly helpless when faced with the eldest branch. They couldn't reason with them at all; after all, the house was Lin Daoyan's mother's dowry and rightfully belonged to Lin Daoyan. It was a favor if the eldest branch allowed their half-brothers to live there; if they didn't want them to, that was perfectly reasonable.

In terms of force, the third branch of the family had absolutely no chance of winning.

If it really came down to a fight, Lin Daowei would be no match for his elder brother, Lin Daoyan.

Lin Daowei's kung fu was entirely taught by his elder brother, but he didn't study it seriously and didn't even learn half of Lin Daoyan's kung fu.

Lin Daowei thought it over and over, and finally sighed helplessly: "Oh well, let me go see my brother first, and then we can discuss this further."

So, Lin Daowei came to the eldest son's side.

He first recounted the details of the investigation, then cautiously inquired, "Brother, regarding the matter between you and Second Brother, I have never been involved from beginning to end."

"Could you please make an exception and let our family continue to live here? It's relatively close to the government office, which will be more convenient for me when I'm on duty."

Upon hearing this, Lin Daoyan hesitated.

After all, Lin Daowei was his half-brother. Although he was somewhat opportunistic and liked to take advantage of others, to be fair, he had never truly harmed anyone from the eldest branch of the family.

Seeing the reluctance on her father's face, Lin Yajun stepped forward without hesitation and said in a firm and decisive tone, "No! You must personally handle the severance of ties between your mother and our eldest branch of the family. From that moment on, our family will have no further connection with either of your families. Therefore, both of you must move out tonight!" She believed that driving one family out and keeping the other would only create more trouble for her family, so it was better to drive both families out together.

Upon hearing this, Officer Lin's expression turned somewhat ugly. He said sullenly, "My dear niece, why must things be done so cruelly?"

Lin Yajun sneered and retorted mercilessly, "The one who did the cruel thing wasn't me, but your mother and you two brothers! As soon as you saw my father's official position was revoked, you immediately turned your backs on us." Her words were like a sharp sword, piercing straight to Lin the constable's weak spot.
