Chapter 45: The Assassin Arrives

Before she transmigrated, Lin Yajun started cooking for herself when she was seven or eight years old. Later, she developed a love for making food and felt incredibly satisfied and accomplished when she ate the food she cooked herself.

Just now, she even taught the cook, Li Ma, how to make steamed egg cake, so that her family can ask Li Ma to make it whenever they want to eat it.

The three sat on the corridor, happily enjoying snacks and sweet soup, chatting and laughing as they praised how delicious the snacks were and how wonderful the sweet soup was.

Suddenly, a dark figure swooped down from the roof like an eagle.

The dark figure, wielding a long sword, flew towards Zhao Canchen with lightning speed, so fast that no one could react in time.

Lin Yajun was skilled in martial arts. When she saw the assassin coming, she dropped the bowl in her hand and nimbly lunged to Zhao Canchen's chest to protect him.

Because Zhao Canchen was around, Lin Yajun didn't dare use her most powerful weapon, for fear of accidentally injuring him.

Lin Yajun swiftly pulled a bottle from her bosom with her left hand and sprayed it into the newcomer's eyes. Then, with her right hand, she took out a poison syringe and quietly stabbed it into the assassin's stomach.

The assassin, who was originally full of confidence and certain of victory, never expected that he would be suddenly attacked by a hidden weapon! The hidden weapon stung his eyes so much that he couldn't open them, and then he was stabbed hard in the stomach!

In an instant, the assassin's world was plunged into darkness; he became completely blind. The sudden turn of events left him panicked and utterly disoriented.

He closed his eyes tightly, trying to escape the dangerous place, but having lost his sight, he couldn't tell which way to go and could only bump around like a headless fly.

Just as the assassin was gripped by extreme panic, Lin Songhao seized the opportunity, swiftly drew his longsword, and thrust it at the assassin without hesitation.

Although the assassin was blind, his hearing was exceptionally sharp. Upon hearing Lin Songhao's movements, he immediately took a deep breath and dodged the fatal blow.

However, the assassin's left leg was still slashed by Lin Songhao's sword, and blood gushed out immediately. The assassin endured the excruciating pain, trying to gather his strength and leap onto the roof to escape.

Seeing that the assassin was trying to escape, Lin Songhao did not hesitate to swing his sword again. The sword strike was as fierce as a storm, giving the assassin no chance to catch his breath.

Lin Yajun originally wanted her brother to let the assassin go, but it was the first time she had encountered such a situation, and she was so nervous that she couldn't speak. She could only watch helplessly as her brother chased after the blind assassin.

Suddenly, a dark shadow swept past like a hurricane, grabbing the assassin's arm with lightning speed. Then, it leaped over the wall like a nimble swallow, and the two figures vanished without a trace in an instant.

"Hao-di, don't chase after them." Lin Ya-jun quickly waved to her younger brother.

"Yes, sister." Lin Songhao obediently stopped and sheathed his longsword.

Lin Yajun was still in shock, her whole body covered in cold sweat, and she stood there in a daze in the corridor.

She knew someone wanted to assassinate Zhao Canchen, but she never expected that someone would come in broad daylight, and that someone would even come to meet the assassin. It was terrifying; Zhao Canchen almost met with an accident.

After calming down, she realized that her father either went early in the morning and guarded the gate until noon, or he went at noon and returned in the evening. The city gates would close at night, so there would be no gatekeepers on duty. Therefore, the assassins had no opportunity to act under the cover of darkness and could only come to assassinate during the day.

"That was terrifying." Lin Yajun composed herself and looked at Zhao Canchen, thankfully saying, "Thank goodness you're alright." She looked at the frail yet handsome man with sympathetic eyes.

Zhao Canchen said guiltily, "I almost dragged you all into this."

He then said gratefully, "Thank you both for saving me."

Zhao Canchen understood, of course, that if the Lin family saved him, it would be a grave sin in someone's eyes; if they didn't save him, it would be an even greater unforgivable sin in the eyes of the world.

He had no choice but to accept that his life was already tied to that of Lin Daoyan's family.

"It's nothing serious." Lin Yajun waved her hand and laughed heartily, "We'll take care of these small fry one by one."

She thought for a moment, and seeing that no one was around, she slipped a small bottle into Zhao Canchen's hand and whispered, "This is pepper spray. Spray it into people's eyes."

"Thank you." Zhao Canchen quickly took it. He had seen Lin Yajun spray this thing into people's eyes twice, making their eyes unable to open and rendering them unable to resist. He held the small bottle tightly in his hand, as if he were holding a life-saving treasure.

Zhao Canchen didn't know kung fu, but he had a weapon to defend himself. He smiled happily, revealing two dimples on his cheeks.

After this dangerous experience, Lin Yajun dared not leave Zhao Canchen's side again. If several assassins came again, her younger brother would not be able to handle them alone.

The three sat quietly reading in the corridor, occasionally exchanging words.

Lin Yajun's gaze fell on the scroll in Zhao Canchen's hand. The characters on it were rather messy, and would be difficult to decipher without careful examination. However, after some effort, she managed to recognize the three characters "Tao Te Ching".

Intrigued, Lin Yajun couldn't help but ask Zhao Canchen, "Young Master Zhao, what use do you think this Tao Te Ching is? Do you perhaps want to become a Taoist priest and cultivate to become an immortal?"

Zhao Canchen's lips curled up slightly, revealing a faint smile, and he explained softly, "I'm reading this book not to become a Taoist priest, but to cultivate my character."

"What are your thoughts and insights after reading this, Young Master Zhao?"

He unfolded the scroll, thought for a moment, and said, "The essence of this book lies in 'the art of war and strategy'."

He said softly, "I have no form, yet I possess countless forms. What form I am depends on you."

Lin Yajun was quite confused by this statement, so she asked, "Young Master Zhao, how exactly should this be understood?"

Zhao Canchen thought for a moment, then explained in detail: "What this means is that I don't have a fixed form. Like water, I can take on various different shapes. And what I ultimately become depends entirely on how others treat me."

He further explained, "You could say that if someone bullies me, I will let them know the consequences; if someone betrays my trust, I will make them regret it; but if you are good to me, I will also let you see that it was worth it."

"It's remarkable that someone can do that," Lin Yajun said sincerely.

Zhao Canchen nodded, secretly encouraging himself: "I must achieve the principle of 'I am formless, yet I possess myriad forms; what form I am depends on you.'" To achieve this, he must strengthen himself; otherwise, he would be unable to truly master the art of "strategic warfare."

Lin Yajun pondered those words carefully and felt they resonated deeply with her. She muttered to herself, "Insightful words. No wonder this book has been passed down for thousands of years!"

She suggested, "After you finish reading this book, could you show it to me and explain it to me?"

"No problem," Zhao Canchen readily agreed.

"Here, have some candy to calm your nerves." Lin Yajun smiled gently, took out a small bag of chocolate beans from her bosom, and poured out a dozen or so into Zhao Canchen and Lin Songhao's hands.
