Chen Yunyun leaned closer again, "Oh, Auntie, you mean that person is Niu Niu's mother who died in childbirth? No wonder! You bully someone's daughter and even want to eat her flesh, wouldn't she crawl out of her grave and come after you!"
Many villagers believe in ghosts and spirits, perhaps because they've done too many bad things. Tiger's mother was terrified by what she heard. She looked at Chen Yunyun, her tone uncertain, "Did you really see it?"
Chen Yunyun said with certainty, "Of course! She was wearing white clothes, and the clothes were torn. Her fingernails were incredibly long, dark and looked very sharp. I was terrified just now!"
Tiger's mother was already 80% convinced. When Chen Yunyun married into the family, the original man had long since passed away, and she had never seen him. Since his story sounded so convincing, it must be true.
Tiger's mother turned pale with fright and dragged her persistent son home. All the taro in Tiger's pocket fell out and rolled on the ground, but Tiger's mother didn't bother letting her son pick them up.
Chen Yunyun stepped over, picked up the taro one by one and put them in her pocket. When she turned around, she saw Niu Niu following her closely, like a little shadow.
Her expression softened, and she picked Niu Niu up in her arms. "Let's go home."
When they reached the edge of the field, she put Niu Niu down, picked up the bamboo bag she had hidden there, and, holding Niu Niu's little hand, slowly walked home.
There were only three children in the family. Their short legs stood guard in front of the earthen stove, dipping their fingers into the leftover vegetable soup from the morning, their faces covered in dirt as they ate.
Chen Yunyun first put Niu Niu down, then washed Sanwa's face clean before taking out the ointment from her backpack.
She lifted Niu Niu's clothes, seemingly talking to herself, but actually explaining to the children: "A few days ago, I went to the post office and your father sent some money back. We bought all the vegetables and meat before. Your father sent some more today, so I bought some ointment, intending to keep it on hand, but you used it first, little girl."
After applying the medicine to the little girl, Chen Yunyun straightened her expression and asked, "Where's your brother?"
The question was naturally directed at Niu Niu, since Sanwa only knows how to play in the mud.
Niu Niu lowered her head, remembering her stepmother's instructions before leaving that morning. She fidgeted with her fingers and whispered, "Brother went up the mountain."
Chen Yunyun snorted. This eldest child is quite stubborn. She had repeatedly told him not to go out, but he still insisted on going out.
If we don't teach her a lesson, no one will listen to her anymore.
