Chapter 17 Meeting New Friends

Today everyone is working together. Usually, the educated youth and local villagers are divided into two teams.

Today everyone is working in groups, and the division is not so clear.

The little girl working next to Jiang Baige looked only fourteen or fifteen years old.

She had two long braids, two red spots on her face from the high altitude freezing, and a wheat-colored complexion. Although she was not big, she worked very skillfully.

Chen Jiaojiao originally worked as a pig farmer, but now the weather was still cold and there was no pig grass for her to collect in the fields.

When winter comes, the pigs eat dried wild vegetables, so she goes to do other work.

Her father is the village chief and usually assigns her some easy work.

Today her mother Zhou Xiuying was sick, so she came to the fields to take over her mother's work for a day.

While working, Chen Jiaojiao was very curious about the unfamiliar educated youth comrade next to her, and would look up at her from time to time.

Chen Jiaojiao was envious in her heart: "Wow, her headscarf is so beautiful, and her clothes are also very beautiful."

From top to bottom, we can see Jiang Baige's feet.

Chen Jiaojiao was envious again. "The Liberation shoes on her feet still look new. How could she bear to wear them out to work?"

She looked down at the cloth shoes on her feet and thought to herself, "If I had a pair of shoes like this, I would definitely not wear them to work."

Jiang Baige was busy with the work at hand, and from time to time she saw the little girl next to her looking at her.

Each glance was so hot that it was hard not to notice.

Since she didn't know him anyway, she pretended not to see him and continued to work.

The original owner was born beautiful, and Jiang Baige was very proud of this.

Now she is Jiang Baige, so she doesn't mind being looked at like this. She has gotten used to it these days.

Chen Jiaojiao looked at the good-looking sister next to her, and unconsciously leaned over and asked softly: "Sister, are you new here? I don't think I have seen you before."

She endured it for a long time before coming over to talk to the other person.

Hearing her question, Jiang Baige responded, "Yeah, I've only been here a few days."

"You just arrived! No wonder I haven't seen you before."

Chen Jiaojiao asked again: "Do you live in the educated youth compound?"

Jiang Baige responded while continuing to work, "Yeah."

Chen Jiaojiao was still very curious, "Sister, where are you from?"

Jiang Baige replied: "Shanghai Stock Exchange."

Chen Jiaojiao said enviously, "I heard from an educated youth that Shanghai is a very big city and everyone there lives in brick and tile houses."

"They also said that every family in your area has electric lights, bicycles, radios and other things. Does your family have those too?"

Seeing the innocent look of the little girl, Jiang Baige patiently replied, "Yes, they do have some."

Chen Jiaojiao showed an envious expression and opened her mouth wide, "Really?! I thought she said she was coming to lie to us."

He said enviously, "Big cities are still better. They have everything. Look at us here. Only the supply and marketing cooperatives have electricity."

Thinking of the Jiang family, they do have bicycles and electric lights at home.

Jiang Baige didn't know how to answer the girl, as she might think she was showing off.

Pursing her lips, she said, "It's not as good as you think. Some families live worse than we do here."

Zhou Guihua, who was standing next to him, asked, "Comrade Jiang, you all live in brick and tile houses in big cities, so you don't have a small second floor, right?"

Jiang Baige thought back to the original owner's home. They lived in a staff dormitory, a small second floor building. She nodded and said, "Yeah."

While the two of them were chatting, the people around them were listening.

After hearing what she said, the aunties and sisters next to her started chatting.

What they said were actually all hearsay, like they heard that people in the city eat meat every meal and every family eats white flour and fine grains, so they have so much money that they can never spend it all.

I don’t know where they heard it, but everyone was listening very enthusiastically.

Jiang Baige heard what they said, shook her head helplessly, and interrupted, "Life in the city now is no different from that in the village. Some families live worse than those in the village."

When she said this, others naturally didn't believe her. Just look at their clothes and the way they looked. Who would believe her if she said she was poor?

Seeing how lively they were, Chen Zhaodi also came here.

There was something she had wanted to ask for a long time, but she never had the chance.

She asked, "Comrade Jiang, the city is so good, why don't you stay and work there?"

"I heard you have a job in the city, which is like a stable job. Why is it that the cheap food is not delicious? You have to come to our country to live a hard life."

When Jiang Baige heard her words, she didn't know whether she was mocking her or what she meant.

After thinking for a moment, he smiled and said, "Isn't this responding to the call of the country? The city has its own advantages, but the mountains also have their own advantages, right?"

When the aunties heard what she said, they were speechless. They wondered if this girl was stupid.

"Comrade Jiang, you are still too young. There is nothing good about this mountain."

Jiang Baige was speechless, thinking to herself, "This isn't good at all. This isn't what I wanted to do, okay? If I had a choice, I wouldn't want to come here and look at the calluses on my hands."

As they were talking, the village chief came over.

Chen Jiaojiao called out "Dad" obediently, "Dad, you're here."

When Chen Defu heard his daughter's voice, he responded, "Well, work hard and don't look around, or you will hurt yourself with the hoe."

Chen Defu heard the lively conversation from afar, so he came over to take a look. He saw that the crowd contained the educated youth who had arrived a few days ago. For a moment, he even forgot their last names.

He smiled and asked, "Comrade, what do you think of us? Are you used to it here?"

Jiang Baige nodded, "It's okay! It's just a little colder than my hometown, but I've gotten used to the temperature these days."

Chen Defu nodded. "Just get used to it. If you need anything, feel free to come to my house. As long as we can, we will do our best to meet your needs."

Hearing him say this, he must be a responsible village chief.

Jiang Baige nodded, "Okay, thank you, Village Chief."

Chen Defu smiled and said, "I have something else to do. You guys continue working! I'll be leaving first."

After the captain left, everyone started to get back to their work.

Jiang Baige then asked the little girl beside her, "The village chief is your father."

Chen Jiaojiao nodded, "Yes, sister, my name is Chen Jiaojiao, what's your name?"

Jiang Baige replied, "My name is Jiang Baige."

The two introduced themselves while working.

Chen Jiaojiao said, "Sister, come to my house and play when you have time! If you don't have to go to work, can I come to play with you?"

Jiang Baige agreed, "Okay! I'll come to play with you when I have time."

This is the daughter of the village chief. No matter whether Jiang Baige goes to play with her or not, she will agree first.

Although she didn't need to establish a relationship with a young girl, being closer to the village chief's family should make it easier for her to handle problems in the future.
