Grandma Xu really took what Jiang Baige said seriously. She was really afraid that something like this would happen.
Seeing that Grandma Xu was so serious, Jiang Baige quickly smiled and tried to fool her.
"Grandma Xu, I was just kidding. After the founding of New China, we no longer allow animals to become spirits, let alone fairies."
When Grandma Xu heard this, she finally laughed.
"You're so funny, grandma, I almost believed you."
Then she continued, "Well, sit down for a while. I'll go make dinner. You can eat and then come back."
Jiang Baige hurriedly shook her head, "I don't want to eat. I came here today for something else."
Grandma Xu was about to go cook. When she heard her say that she had something else to do, she quickly asked what it was.
"Where are you going so late?"
Jiang Baige then said, "Grandma Xu, where is Guo Xiaofang's home?"
When Grandma Xu heard it was Guo Xiaofang, she quickly asked her what was going on.
Because something happened to the Guo family recently, she was afraid that this girl would get involved with them and harm herself.
Grandma Xu walked back, sat down next to her, and then asked in a low voice.
"Girl, you know Guo Xiaofang."
Jiang Baige didn't know what was going on, so she just nodded seriously.
"Yes, I know him."
Seeing that Grandma Xu's expression was not right, Jiang Baige asked suspiciously.
"Grandma Xu, is there something wrong with their family?"
Seeing that she didn't know, Grandma Xu said, "Guo Xiaofang's family was reported. It was said that her grandfather did something bad a few years ago. Now, because of this, her father was even fired as the village party secretary."
Jiang Baige's mouth dropped open. "What? Something from the previous generation could even implicate the village Party Secretary? It's been so many years, and it could still be reported?"
Grandma Xu nodded. "That's right! I heard that his son-in-law lost his job in the county, and his daughter-in-law used to work at the supply and marketing cooperative, but now she's lost her job too."
Jiang Baige found it unbelievable after hearing this.
"This is considered joint liability! He didn't even let his son-in-law go. Reporting his family members is putting them to death!"
Grandma Xu sighed, "That's right! I don't know who did it. The old man from the Guo family has been dead for many years, and now they are using his descendants to accuse him of a crime."
"His son-in-law was originally fine. I heard that as long as he cut off ties with them and then provided some evidence, he could stay and be protected. But his son-in-law is too stubborn and would rather give up his job than cut off ties with his father-in-law's family."
Jiang Baige didn't expect that Brother Zhao was so righteous. He could have taken his wife and children and cut off ties with them.
She then asked, "So are the people in their family free? Have they not been sent to labor camps?"
Grandma Xu waved her hand. "No? They were just reported. They have no evidence, so there's nothing we can do to them."
"Because the villagers all helped to plead for mercy, they were not severely punished."
He sighed and said, "It's just that! From now on, he will be just like us and can only be an old farmer."
Jiang Baige was relieved when she heard that everything was fine. Their family's situation was much better than that of the family in Qinghe Brigade.
Grandma Xu went on to say, "It's a pity that such a good village cadre is gone. He was very responsible and always thought of us. When he's gone, it would be fine if a reliable one comes up, but if someone who doesn't do anything comes up, we ordinary people will be the ones who suffer."
Jiang Baige agreed with Grandma Xu's words. His father-in-law did a good job as the village chief, so the people in Chenjia Village could have enough food to eat compared to those in other villages.
She asked again: "If I go to their house, it should be okay! Will there be someone watching outside their house, otherwise I will see people."
She was afraid that since the incident had just happened, someone would still be monitoring them, and if they met with the past, they would be punished more severely.
Grandma Xu laughed and waved her hand, "Why are you still staring at them? Their house has been dug up three feet below. There's no point staring at them."
After hearing this, Jiang Baige guessed that their house must have been searched.
Then he asked, "You've dug all the way into the ground, have you found anything good?"
Grandma Xu then sighed again.
"The village party secretary is an upright person. There is nothing valuable in his house. They searched the house but found nothing. They felt embarrassed and just carried away the furniture."
Jiang Baige listened to what Grandma Xu said and clicked her tongue twice.
All the furniture has been moved away, so I guess their life must be difficult now.
Jiang Baige said to Grandma Xu, "Then I'll go to their house first and come to your place later."
Grandma Xu said, "If you want to go, go a little later. If someone sees you going there, you might cause trouble for them again."
Jiang Baige thought about it and felt that it made sense.
She nodded, "Okay, I'll be there later."
Grandma Xu smiled and said, "Then I'll go make dinner. We'll eat something later before we leave."
Jiang Baige looked at the sky and agreed: "Well, then just make some porridge."
Grandma Xu smiled and said, "Okay."
Then she went to cook.
As soon as Grandma Xu left, the Xu Jie brothers ran out.
Jiang Baige saw that their faces were washed clean and looked pretty good, so she pulled them to sit down and talked to them.
He took out two handfuls of candy from his pocket and gave each person a big handful.
Xu Jie said happily: "Thank you, sister."
"I haven't even finished what you gave me last time, and now you're giving us so much, we won't be able to finish it until Chinese New Year."
Jiang Baige smiled at him, and seeing that their faces had become much rounder, she rubbed their heads.
