Chapter 33 Grandma Meng's House

Jiang Baige packed up and didn't take much. She wrapped the quilt on the bed with a sheet and packed a set of clothes.

Anyway, the two places are close, so you can come back and get what you need later.

Seeing her packing her luggage, Li Yan asked, "Comrade Jiang, is there any food over there? Bring some rice with you."

If Li Yan hadn't mentioned it, Jiang Baige would have forgotten about it. She nodded and said, "Oh! I almost forgot."

As he spoke, he found a bag and filled it with some rice.

Jiang Baige quickly arrived at Grandma Meng's house, but thinking that she was sleeping, she didn't disturb her.

She put the quilt on the chair under the eaves and walked towards the village chief's house.

I knocked twice on the door, and someone answered, "I'm coming."

It was Chen Jiaojiao who opened the door. When she saw the person at the door, Chen Jiaojiao happily shouted, "Sister, why are you here?"

Jiang Baige asked, "Jiaojiao, I have something to ask the village chief. Is he home?"

Chen Jiaojiao nodded, "Yeah, yeah, I'm at home, come in quickly!"

Jiang Baige entered the courtyard of the village chief's house and looked around. The courtyard was very large, and the house was divided into two rooms, east and west, and a main room.

The houses here all look the same.

The yard was very clean, and there was a patch of vegetable seedlings planted under the wall.

Chen Jiaojiao led the way, "Sister, sit inside."

She followed Chen Jiaojiao to the main room. There was no oil lamp in the room and it was pitch black.

The village chief was warming himself by the fire, with the firelight shining on his face. When he saw her coming, he hurriedly called her over.

"Comrade Jiang, you're back. Come sit here!"

Jiang Baige said, "Thank you, Uncle Village Chief. I won't sit here anymore. I have to go back soon."

Chen Defu asked, "So you have something to talk to me about?"

Jiang Baige nodded and said, "Uncle Village Chief, Grandma Meng's one arm is not very convenient right now. I want to live here to take care of her for a while, but there are regulations for educated youths, so we can't live outside."

"Well, it's not that we can't live outside, but we're worried that if something happens to you, we won't be able to explain it."

After hearing what the village chief said, Jiang Baige asked, "If I want to take care of Grandma Meng, can I live here?"

Chen Defu thought for a moment and said, "As long as you can guarantee your own safety living here, it's not impossible."

Jiang Baige was delighted, "I promise I won't go there after dark."

Chen Jiaojiao asked happily, "Sister, are you going to live next door to us? That's great."

Chen Defu coughed twice and said, "Comrade Jiang is here to take care of your Grandma Meng. Please don't go over and make a fuss. It will affect your Grandma Meng's recovery."

Chen Jiaojiao pouted, "Dad, look at what you said, I'm not a child anymore. If I don't go over, my sister can come to my house and play!"

After saying that, he looked at Jiang Baige eagerly, "Sister, don't you agree?"

Jiang Baige nodded and said, "Then I won't bother you. Grandma Meng hasn't had dinner yet, so I have to go back and cook."

Chen Jiaojiao led the way, "Sister, I'll take you there."

Zhou Xiuying smiled and shook her head. "Send Comrade Jiang to Grandma Meng's door and then come back."

The two girls smiled and walked out hand in hand. Chen Jiaojiao replied after they were far away, "I know."

It was very dark, and Chen Jiaojiao actually sent Jiang Baige to Grandma Meng's house and then went back.

Jiang Baige entered the yard and closed the door. She didn't have time to look around at the environment of Grandma Meng's house. She decided to cook first!

There was movement in Grandma Meng's room, and Jiang Baige knocked on the door gently.

"Grandma Meng, you woke up, didn't you?"

It was dark outside, and even darker inside the house. Grandma Meng responded, "Yeah, I'm up."

Grandma Meng seemed to have more energy after a good sleep, and her voice was stronger.

He asked, "Didn't I tell you to go back? Why are you here again?"

Jiang Baige's eyesight was still good. She came to the bedside and helped Grandma Meng sit up. "Your hands are not convenient for you. I will stay here to take care of you for a while."

"Don't tell me you don't need my care. I've noticed these past few days that you're just being hard on the outside but soft on the inside.

Grandma Meng was annoyed and snorted, "What do you know, little kid? Come on, you're not hungry, right?"

"Since you're going to take care of me, go cook! I'm hungry."

Jiang Baige smiled brightly, "Okay, I'll go cook," and was about to leave.

Grandma Meng hurriedly called her, "Give me a hand, let's go together."

"Without me here, you don't know where your things are."

In the kitchen, Grandma Meng found two flints on the stove, placed them in Jiang Baige's hands, and coughed twice. "I can't see either. We don't have a kerosene lamp at home. Please light some firewood to illuminate me!"

Jiang Baige felt two stone-like objects in her hands. She seemed to have heard of them before. They seemed to be called flints.

A little embarrassed, "Uh, Grandma Meng, I don't know how to do this."

She really didn't know how to use it. The people in the educated youth compound all used matches, which would light up as soon as they slipped. This flint was too old-fashioned.

Grandma Meng snorted softly and put the flint back. One of her hands was in a cast and she couldn't move it. She sighed, "Okay, go back to sleep!"

Grandma Meng thought that since she couldn’t even light a fire, there was no point in eating. She wouldn’t be hungry if she fell asleep.

Jiang Baige's eyes rolled, "No! I brought something better than this."

She didn't want to make something for later generations. Grandma Meng couldn't see it anyway, so even if she told her what it was, she probably wouldn't know.

There were only the two of them here, so there was no need to hide anything. As soon as they spread out their palms, a lighter instantly appeared in their palms.

With a click, she said with a smile, "This is much more convenient."

The light from the lighter immediately illuminated Grandma Meng's kind face.
