Unfinished Snow
That winter seemed to be particularly cold, so they moved out of their original home and moved into a smaller one. It was so dilapidated that it took them several days just to clear out two rooms for people to live in.
Bai Shunan was playing with the dust accumulated in the corner at home, putting all the things he couldn't figure out behind his mind. During that time, his face was always gray.
His mother looked at Shunan worriedly. In a few days, he would be six years old and it would be time for him to go to school.
"Why does this child talk so little? Is there something wrong with his brain?" The father said dissatisfiedly when he saw that Bai Shunan didn't respond when he teased him.
"Shun'an is fine, just a little quiet," the mother said calmly as she knitted a scarf. "Have you found a job?"
My father was silent for a moment, then talked about something else. "What do you think of what I said last night?"
The mother paused while knitting the scarf and missed a stitch, then she continued knitting without paying any attention to the father.
Seeing that his mother no longer looked as desperate as she did last night, his father understood that her attitude had softened.
"How about tomorrow? Shunnian won't be home."
The air was filled with chill as the mother knitted the scarf faster. "You decide."
For some reason, my father's face turned ashamed for a moment, but it only lasted for a moment before returning to normal. He said emphatically, "This is good for him."
I don’t know who I’m talking to.
A day later, after his father took Bai Shunan out, his mother's face was obviously cold, and she seemed to be chilled and gloomy. Big, hot tears kept falling, but she didn't wipe them away. The whole scene looked sad and funny.
Tears dripped onto the word "Shun'an" on the scarf, which had not been sewn yet. She wiped it away hurriedly, and the tears melted into it. She sewed "Shun" first, and only sewn a stroke of "An". She wanted to sew it into the word "Nian" instead. Looking at the scarf belonging to Bai Shunnian that had already been knitted in the basket, she could no longer hold back her tears, and they flowed even more. After sliding across her face with warmth, they became colder than before, as if they wanted to freeze on her face. An impulse surged in her heart, and the mother didn't know what she was thinking. She took the scarf and rushed out of the door. After running for a while, she saw the father and son who had not left far.
"Wait," she shouted.
She looked at her husband's complicated eyes when he turned around. She understood what he was thinking. She walked to Bai Shunan, squatted down, and wrapped the unfinished scarf around Bai Shunan. "Shunan, the weather is getting cold. I wish you a smooth journey... and a smooth future."
The husband looked at his wife, but didn't dare to meet her gaze, so he took his youngest son's hand and continued walking the unfinished road.
When passing by a vendor selling candied haws, the father couldn't pull his son away, so he looked down and saw Bai Shunan staring blankly at the candied haws.
The hawthorns were wrapped in a translucent sugar coating. My father looked at it and felt a sour taste in his mouth. He swallowed his sour saliva and said, "Do you want to eat it?"
Shunan nodded.
His father took out a dollar from his wallet, bought a string of candied haws and handed it to Bai Shunan.
"Aren't you going to buy it for your brother?"
His father was startled and touched Bai Shunan's head. A trace of sadness appeared in his tired eyes. He himself hadn't expected that Bai Shunan would actually shiver. He didn't know whether it was because of the cold or because of his heartbreak. He was stunned. The sight of the candied haws made his mouth sour, and his tone became bitter as well. "He will have it."
When they reached their destination, Bai Shunan hadn't finished his candied haws yet. His father picked him up and put him on the swing. "Shunan, stay here first. I'm going to do something and will pick you up later."
…
Bai Shunan closed his eyes again, and his heart suddenly became panicked again.
Bai Shunan was startled by the noise coming from a distance. Just as he was about to go and see, the voice of a staff member reached his ears.
"This 'Young Master' Lu is throwing a tantrum again." A staff member not far away complained, his tone full of sarcasm.
Bai Shunan lost interest in watching. He had seen too many willful people. At this time, Li Xuanyue's serious and angry voice came over.
"I let you choose this time. I didn't ask you to kick everyone out."
The voices were accompanied by a sound similar to that of books being thrown.
Bai Shunan didn't pay attention to what happened. He wanted to leave here since he was awakened. He looked up at the time on the display screen. He had been here long enough.
Bai Shunan looked at Zhang Wei, "Not well yet?"
Zhang Wei stood on tiptoe and looked ahead with difficulty. He realized something belatedly and his face became increasingly ugly.
"Go ahead and pick," someone said provocatively, "I won't be satisfied with anyone you choose."
Bai Shunan was startled and looked forward. Zhang Wei's expression was angry, his eyes were determined, and he muttered, "No, we've waited this long, we must go to Director Li again. I won't be willing to give it a try."
Li Xuanyue glanced at Lu Jinfeng unhappily as he walked to the dressing room. She didn't know how many times the actors originally scheduled to play "Qi Ci" had been driven away by Lu Jinfeng one after another. Her patience had long been worn out. Every time she wanted to give up Lu Jinfeng, the screenwriter Ahua would always come out to persuade her, saying that Lu Jinfeng was her ideal Yun Cen.
Zhang Wei stretched out his hand and waved it in front of Bai Shunan, "Stop being in a daze."
Bai Shunan felt as if he was frozen in place.
“Could it be…”
Zhang Wei: "Hmm?"
Bai Shunan turned around and looked at Zhang Wei, his voice trembling, "The male lead is played by Lu Jinfeng?"
When Bai Shunan said that person's name, he felt his mouth getting very hot. When he swallowed his saliva, it felt like it was pricking his throat and causing him choking pain.
He really didn't understand what kind of luck he had.
Zhang Wei frowned and looked at Bai Shunan in confusion, "You don't know, the first male lead of 'Light and Shadow', Lu Jinfeng, has been rumored online for so long."
Bai Shunan didn't know. If he had known, he wouldn't have come no matter how much courage he had. The past was vivid in his mind. Even though the face and the scene were already blurred in his memory, he still remembered the hateful and disgusted look he had given him at that time.
Thinking of this, Bai Shunan felt a chill on his back, as if a knife was hanging over his head, waiting coldly for the judge to arrive.
"Oh, I forgot about that," Zhang Wei suddenly realized, "You used to be a fan of Lu Jinfeng. If you were chosen, you might be able to act with your former idol."
Bai Shunan turned around and was about to leave.
Zhang Wei quickly held him back, "Don't go. I know you're shy, especially when facing your idol. But Shunan, I hope you can do your best to get this role..."
Zhang Wei's eyes softened: "I beg you."
Zhang Wei pushed Bai Shunan forward. Bai Shunan walked forward silently. His body had already made the decision for him between advancing and retreating.
Let's try it, he thought. It had been a long time since he had felt this urge to act on instinct.
"If this continues..." Li Xuanyue looked at Ahua with a dejected face, and everything was said without words.
Ah Hua lowered her head and thought.
"You know his temper well," Li Xuanyue said, not wanting to say anything harsh to Ah Hua. "He's been resisting since he saw the real script, doing all sorts of things every day that disrupt the filming progress. It's obvious that he wants us to give up on him. I've tried and compromised, letting him choose an actor he's satisfied with, but you can see that his attitude is so obvious. This won't work. I can't find a woman to play 'Qi Ci' just because he's homophobic. I won't indulge him like that."
Li Xuanyue sighed softly. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of Bai Shunan, who was being pushed towards her by Zhang Wei. A fleeting resistance flashed in her eyes. She turned around, frowned at Bai Shunan in front of her, and subconsciously said, "Are you still there?"
Bai Shunan was not surprised by Li Xuanyue's reaction. He was already used to this kind of thing. "Still there."
Thinking of this, perhaps because he was too frightened, he found it funny and laughed.
