They gained too much, and there were many people at the educated youth site, so the two went to Lin Xiuyao's home. This was Su Qingmeng's first time there.
Lin Xiuyao's home consisted of three brick and tile houses, two bedrooms, and a kitchen. To the west, there was an additional adobe room, lacking a kang (kang), where miscellaneous items were stored. Next to the house was a field where vegetables were grown. To the east was a firewood shed and a toilet. The yard was quite large.
The house was quite clean. Lin Xiuyao took out a piece of plastic sheet and spread it on the open space, and hung the mushrooms on it to dry.
Su Qingmeng washed the hawthorns, sliced them and dried them in the sun while Lin Xiuyao cooked in the house.
He made rabbit stewed with potatoes, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, and rice for dinner. Lin Xiuyao's cooking skills were decent; the food wasn't bad, and it was home-cooked.
Su Qingmeng ate and praised, saying that she would make more when she learned how to cook. Lin Xiuyao believed her and asked her to eat more.
After dinner, Su Qingmeng left with the hawthorns and raspberries. She wanted to leave some for Lin Xiuyao, but Lin Xiuyao said he didn't like them and asked her to take them all away, so she brought them all back.
Su Qingmeng put most of them into the warehouse, and there was only space for apples. She had wanted to eat other fruits for a long time.
She only brought a small portion back to the educated youth site and gave some to Zhou Wenxi and Tian Ke. Zhou Wenxi said there were two letters from her. Su Qingmeng thought they were replies from the newspaper and didn't pay much attention to them, so she just put them on the table.
After finishing her work, she opened it and found a letter from the original owner's best friend. The letter focused on describing her happy life in the city, and hypocritically asked about her life in the countryside and whether she had made any progress with her senior.
Su Qingmeng scoffed and casually tossed the letter into the space. She wasn't going to reply. She would meet this person when she returned to the city and give her a chance to become jealous. She didn't want to pay attention to her now.
The apples in the Songjiang Brigade orchard are ripe, and Su Qingmeng is assigned to pick them.
The apples in the orchard were the Guoguang variety. They tasted a bit sour, and Su Qingmeng liked sweet and sour fruit. She heard that the villagers could buy them with money after picking them, so she decided to buy some.
The autumn weather was crisp and clear, and the orchard was bustling with activity. Picking apples required extreme caution, so two people worked together efficiently. Tian Ke grabbed the branches and picked the apples, while Su Qingmeng took them and put them in the basket. Once the basket was full, someone else took it away.
Each basket was one centimeter thick, and the work wasn't tiring. They picked 10 baskets in a day, then ran out of apples. Otherwise, there would have been more. It really is true that there is strength in numbers, and they finished the picking in a day.
After two days, Apple counted the number of items that had been handed in and sent them away. The remaining items could be purchased with money at 5 cents per pound. Each person was limited to purchasing five pounds, and it was on a first-come, first-served basis.
As soon as Su Qingmeng and Tian Ke finished work, they rushed to the brigade headquarters. When they arrived, Zhou Wenxi was already there, with a line of about ten people ahead of her. When Su Qingmeng arrived, there were still plenty of apples. Since there were so many wild fruits on the mountain, few villagers were buying them, so most of the people in the line were educated youth.
She bought five kilograms and waited on the side. After everyone had bought theirs, there was still some left. Su Qingmeng bargained with the team leader and bought another 10 kilograms before going back satisfied.
Lin Xiuyao came over on the way and saw that she had so many apples. He asked, "Do you like apples?"
"Yes, I'm used to eating some fruit every day to supplement vitamin C, which is good for the skin." Lin Xiuyao looked at her fair and delicate skin and nodded secretly. Her skin was pretty good.
The next day after work, Lin Xiuyao brought over a sack of apples. "Su Zhiqing, I exchanged some apples for you. Keep them for yourself."
A little bit? Fortunately, apples are durable. Su Qingmeng asked him to store them in the cellar. They can be eaten until the New Year.
She said, "Lin Xiuyao, I'm going to the commune tomorrow for the day off. Please lend me your bicycle!"
Lin Xiuyao immediately became excited. "I'll take a day off tomorrow too. I'll take you there."
Su Qingmeng didn't know what made him so excited, but it would be less tiring to ride with someone than to ride on her own. The two of them agreed to set off at 6:30 and have breakfast at a state-owned restaurant.
In the evening, Su Qingmeng tidied up the space. The cotton was ripe, and after the harvest, she planted another batch. She also planted some vegetables on the remaining 10 plots of farmland to prepare for the winter when there was a shortage of vegetables.
Today she had another task: to build a toilet on the farm. Entering the building editing page, Su Qingmeng dug a pool in the corner of the farm, surrounded it with bamboo fences produced by Bamboo House on three sides, and placed a bamboo gate on one side.
After setting up, she entered the farm, took out the wooden boards produced in the carpentry workshop from the warehouse, placed the boards on the pool, and a simple toilet was completed.
Although this toilet is as simple as the one outside, the water on the farm is refreshed every day, so the smell is not bad, and Su Qingmeng does not have to endure the cold to go to the toilet in winter.
At half past six, Su Qingmeng and Lin Xiuyao met at the educated youth point. She was wearing a yellow and white patchwork top today, which was made of the turmeric cloth she bought last time at the commune. She was wearing a black ankle-length skirt and white Warrior shoes.
She stood there quietly, with an intellectual gentleness. Lin Xiuyao sighed, "A graceful lady is a good match for a gentleman."
Su Qingmeng sighed back: "The piled stones are like jade, and the rows of pines are like emerald green." Lin Xiuyao was wearing a white shirt and black pants. When he was not smiling, he really looked like a gentleman, but when he smiled, he was handsome and cool.
After praising each other, they couldn't help but smile, and the two set off. Lin Xiuyao placed a cushion on the back of the bicycle, and Su Qingmeng was impressed by her boyfriend's thoughtfulness.
After she got on the bicycle, Lin Xiuyao rode very fast. The road was quite bumpy at this time. Su Qingmeng held the seat tightly and complained, "Slow down, it's too bumpy. What if I fall?"
Lin Xiuyao's voice was tinged with laughter. "You can hug me." Su Qingmeng suddenly realized that it was all a routine, but she wasn't one to be shy, so she put her arms around Lin Xiuyao's waist. Feeling her muscles tense instantly, Su Qingmeng chuckled.
The wind rustled Su Qingmeng's hair as she gazed at the scenery passing by: the sky high and the clouds light, the wilderness vast and open. This was love in the seventies. She rested her head on Lin Xiuyao's back, feeling good.
