The two bought gifts for their relatives and boarded the train back to their hometown. Beijing Station is a big station with many tickets available, so they bought sleeper tickets directly at the train station.
Su Qingmeng was carsick. It was summer, and the car was filled with the stench of sweat and feet—a particularly unpleasant smell. She pulled out a mask and put it on, then gave one to Lin Xiuyao as well. After the two of them wandered around for over a day, they got off in the provincial capital.
It was morning now, and they didn't stop and went straight home by car.
Su Qingmeng sat by the window. The strong smell of gasoline made her feel uncomfortable. Lin Xiuyao fanned her with a fan. "Why are you still carsick after taking medicine?" Su Qingmeng shook her head, not wanting to talk.
After finally reaching the county town, Lin Xiuyao found an oxcart from a neighboring village and took them to the village entrance.
The villagers we met on the road greeted us warmly, "Yao, are you on vacation?" "How is the capital?"
Seeing Su Qingmeng's pale face, Aunt Dahua asked, "Little Su Zhiqing, are you carsick again?"
Su Qingmeng smiled and said, "I'll talk to you later. I'm going home first. I feel bad."
When they got home, Lin Xiuyao brought out a recliner and asked her to sit in the shade of a tree in the yard while he cleaned up first. Su Qingmeng swayed and fell asleep.
She woke up when she heard the voice of the captain. She stood up and greeted him, "Uncle is here."
Lin Xiuyao said, "When you wake up, go to sleep in the room. It's cleaned up."
The captain shook his head secretly. This kid is too henpecked. Lin Baoguo asked him about Beijing. His generation was very yearning for the capital. Lin Xiuyao took out the Chairman Mao badges, Tiananmen badges, etc. that he had bought. "Uncle, this is for you."
"Good, good, you have really made it. If your father were still alive, he would definitely be very happy." He sighed.
Lin Xiuyao was silent for a while, "I'll go to his grave in a few days and burn some paper money."
Lin Baoguo stayed for a while and then left, as the brigade had a lot to do. A little later, Lin Xiutong came over. "Brother Xiuyao, you're back? What's life like at Peking University?" The two of them talked about their respective universities.
"By the way, my mother asked you to come to my house for dinner tonight." Lin Xiuyao suddenly remembered the purpose of his visit.
Lin Xiuyao said, "My uncle just called. Let's go to his house for dinner."
"Okay. I'll go back then. I'll come talk to you tomorrow."
Su Qingmeng woke up in the evening. She took a bath and felt much better. Lin Xiuyao said, "Uncle asked us to go to his house for dinner tonight."
Su Qingmeng nodded, "Just this one meal."
At the captain's house for dinner that night, the eldest sister-in-law, the second sister-in-law, and the eldest aunt were very welcoming. They looked at Su Qingmeng's clothes. Today he was wearing a light green Dacron shirt, and they kept praising the clothes for being so nice, worthy of being from a big city.
Su Qingmeng opened the bag they brought with them and said, "I brought some for you too."
Each family gave enough cloth to make two Dacron shirts and a roast duck, which was a more practical gift.
Lin Meimei was there too, holding her little son, who was six months old and not yet a year old.
She has gained a lot of weight. This year's college entrance examination results came out, and she failed again. This year, only Wang Aiguo and Ye Xiu passed the exam in the village.
She looked grim. Guo Wei had written her one letter after he started college, but there had been no news since then. He hadn't sent anything back, and he hadn't come back during the summer vacation. She asked Lin Xiutong, who said they weren't in the same school and had never met.
There was no news from Guo Wei anymore, and she was very worried, afraid that something might have happened to him. She also had an unspeakable worry. Although she didn't want to admit it, it might be like what her parents said, that Guo Wei was going to abandon her and her daughter.
After dealing with the relatives, Su Qingmeng finally had some free time. She took some cakes and went to visit her aunts, Aunt Dahua and Aunt Cuihua.
Life in the village had not changed much. They talked about family matters and she listened carefully, as these were all materials for her writing.
Lin Xiuyao went to the commune to visit Lin Erlan. He gave her some Beijing specialties and then went to the scrap yard to see Mr. Huang. He gave him some Beijing cakes. Mr. Wang said, "Oh, is it donkey rolls?"
Lin Xiuyao was curious, "Uncle, have you ever lived in Beijing?" He thought Uncle Wang was very mysterious.
The old man remained tight-lipped and just shook his head. He chatted with the old man for a while, then went to the scrap yard and picked up some interesting things.
The villagers were very curious about life in Beijing, and people she didn't know often came to visit, and Su Qingmeng told them about it over and over again.
The accountant's wife came over to ask if she had seen Lin Xiaoyuan in Beijing. She said, "I don't know. Jingcheng is quite big, and we are not in the same school."
She was very disappointed. "Xiaoyuan wrote back saying everything was fine, but I was always worried."
Su Qingmeng didn't know how to comfort her. Should she say, "You're worried, right?"
The heroine's life after returning to the city was indeed unhappy. There was a wicked mother-in-law in the city who looked down on her sister-in-law, which is why she gave up the novel. But the ending is definitely happy.
The accountant's daughter-in-law left in disappointment. Su Qingmeng watched her staggering back, feeling sorry for the love of parents in the world.
The educated youth would come over to ask for help with their homework, and Yang Ping would follow, looking at Lin Xiuyao with affectionate eyes. Su Qingmeng noticed that this female supporting role had shifted her focus.
Su Qingmeng directly drove her away and made it clear that she was not welcome to her home. Yang Ping looked at Lin Xiuyao aggrievedly, but Lin Xiuyao didn't even look at her.
Zhang Fang pulled her out, a little angry: "What are you doing? Why are you looking at Comrade Lin?"
Yang Ping lowered her head and said nothing. She was a little anxious. She was already 24 years old and had failed the college entrance examination this year. She wanted to give up. Her grades were not good when she was in school. Her best choice at the moment was to get married and return to the city.
