Chapter 72 Reunion Dinner

We ate dumplings in the morning. It is the custom here to eat dumplings on the first morning of the New Year. We made them together last night and just steamed them in the pot.

After breakfast, Su Qingmeng placed peanuts, melon seeds and candies on the kang for visitors to take and eat.

Sister-in-law Zhang Wangyue brought her children to the east room. This was her first time here. There were more furniture in the east room than in the west room. She was not very happy because she was the eldest child in the family.

Su Qingmeng asked the children to eat, and her sister-in-law said, "You prepared quite a lot."

"We came back a day earlier than you did and bought it at the commune. Oh, it's called a town now."

"By the way, you were an educated youth here before, so how did you marry my uncle?" She has been curious about this question for a long time.

"He is handsome." Su Qingmeng said with a smile.

Zhang Wangyue felt that her sister-in-law was just being perfunctory. After she got married, she saw the wedding photos sent by Lin Xiuyao and was curious about why Su Qingmeng, an educated youth from the city who was so beautiful, would choose a poor boy from the countryside.

"Your parents don't object?"

Su Qingmeng: "Oh, my father died, my mother remarried, and no one can take care of me."

"Oh, sorry, I didn't know." Zhang Wangyue apologized. She felt that she knew the truth. This sister-in-law was not good at farm work. She had no family support in the countryside. She must have married to avoid hard labor.

Tiezhu came in with a group of children, "Happy New Year, Auntie! Happy New Year, Second Auntie!"

The two gave red envelopes to the children. Su Qingmeng's was wrapped in red paper, and Zhang Wangyue gave each of them one yuan. The trip back home cost a lot of money. She spent more than 200 yuan on shopping, tickets, and New Year's money. She earned more than 30 yuan a month, so she felt a little sorry for it.

For lunch, they had the leftovers from yesterday’s New Year’s Eve dinner. Of course, they were not the leftovers on the table, but the leftovers in the kitchen. Su Qingmeng and Lin Xiuyao heated up the food.

She didn't feel like cooking in the evening. Su Qingmeng said, "We've been eating a lot of fish and meat these days. Make me a bowl of fat-removing soup."

Lin Xiuyao laughed. Isn’t it just cabbage and tofu soup?

Lin Xiuyao went to heat the kang, and when he saw Zhang Wangyue, he said, "Sister-in-law, you guys can make whatever you want to eat. We'll just have cabbage soup. We've been too greasy these days."

Zhang Wangyue had no choice but to call Lin Xiuhe, "Go and help me light the fire."

"Isn't your sister-in-law cooking?" He heard some noise in the kitchen and asked his wife to go out and help.

Zhang Wangyue: "Your brother is cooking. He said they will have cabbage soup tonight."

Lin Xiuhe went to the kitchen and saw Lin Xiuyao humming a song. "You, a grown man, are quite happy cooking."

Lin Xiuyao rolled his eyes and ignored him. Both sides were busy with their own things.

When Lin Erlan came back on the second day of the Chinese New Year, she was pregnant again. Her belly was very big and she was eight months pregnant.

Su Qingmeng asked: "Don't we care about this?" They all have family planning, and Lin Erlan already has two children.

"I got pregnant in the fifth month of the lunar calendar, and the policy hadn't been announced yet!"

Su Qingmeng nodded, "Are you about to give birth?"

"Soon." Lin Erlan hesitated to speak. She was too embarrassed to ask Su Qingmeng, so she went to ask Lin Xiuyao, "Why don't you two have a child yet? Have you been to the hospital?"

It has been several years and I haven't had any children. Now, the country doesn't allow me to have more children, so Xiu Yao can only have one child from now on.

Lin Xiuyao told her not to worry about it, "We have our own plans. Second sister, how are you doing now?"

"It's fine." She was pregnant again. Her mother-in-law had high hopes for this baby. After all, it was her last. She had good food and drink. Her parents were also wealthy and often sent her meat.

"That's good. I brought you a gift." He went to get the clothes and stationery. "The clothes are for you. You didn't tell me you were pregnant before, so save them for after the baby is born! And there are stationery for Qiuqiu. She's going to school soon, right?"

Lin Erlan took it with a smile, "It's a waste of money." No wonder she had the best relationship with this second cousin. After she got married, he thought about her every day.
