Chapter 48 School Starts

Lin Xiuyao kept his word. He carried both of their luggage, and Su Qingmeng followed empty-handed. When they arrived at the registration office, he took his admission letter and identification documents and went to line up, while Su Qingmeng sat beside him and watched over the luggage.

A young man wearing glasses came over and said, "Hello, classmate. I'm a sophomore in the physics department. Do you need any help?"

Su Qingmeng pointed at Lin Xiuyao and said, "Thank you, Senior. No need. My husband is waiting in line."

The young man looked in the direction of her finger. Lin Xiuyao was looking at him unkindly. The young man smiled awkwardly and said, "Okay, classmate, please sit down. I'll go help others."

Lin Xiuyao was thinking that there would definitely be more wild women in college than in the countryside, so he should keep a close eye on his wife.

After registering, we went to Su Qingmeng's dormitory first. She lived in 209, Building 3. The two of us went to the second floor and found 209. It was okay. It was close to the bathroom, but the toilet was a little far away. However, it was good that there was no bad smell. After all, toilets in this era all have smells.

Su Qingmeng pushed open the door to her dormitory. There were four bunk beds in the room, with a cabinet between the two beds against the wall. There were three large tables in the middle of the room. Four of the beds were already filled with luggage.

There were already two people in the room. One was a strong-looking older woman, and the other was a pretty young woman.

Seeing someone come in, the older sister stood up and introduced herself. "Hello, my name is Wang Shanyue," she gestured to the girl, "and this is He Rui." Su Qingmeng also introduced herself, and they exchanged a few simple pleasantries.

Su Qingmeng made her bed, choosing the upper bunk behind the door. This was her experience from years of living on campus; if she got out of bed, someone else would be sitting there, so it was better to get into the upper bed. Furthermore, with no heating, it was cold near the window, and there was a draft from the door, so her bed, number 8, was the best.

Lin Xiuyao was handing something under the bed. She wiped the bed twice and made it up. It was covered with a thick, newly made quilt. She hung mosquito nets around the edges. They were quite thick at the time, and the effect was similar to a curtain. While there were no mosquitoes now, it provided privacy for her to change clothes.

After putting the remaining things in the cabinet, Su Qingmeng locked the cabinet, said goodbye to her roommate and left.

The two of them went to Lin Xiuyao's dormitory, which wasn't very close, and it took them ten minutes to walk there. There was no one else in his dorm, so they packed their bags and went to explore the campus.

The Peking University campus is quaint and beautiful, with slogans from the 1980s and 1990s still etched throughout the campus, all signs of history. They strolled along the shores of Weiming Lake, catching sight of the Boya Tower in the distance, Peking University's most famous sight. Lin Xiuyao pulled out his camera, and they all took pictures by the lake. He even stopped a passing classmate and took a photo of the two of them.

They took photos at various distinctive places on campus, and then returned to the entrance to take pictures under the quaint gate.

I had lunch in the cafeteria at noon. It was light, but not bad. "Let's go buy some side dishes when we have time. The pickled vegetables from Liubiju were pretty good last time. I like the sweet and sour cucumbers and radishes."

Lin Xiuyao: "There's still some at home. Let's go back and get some later!"

"Can you make me a bedside desk?" Su Qingmeng asked. She had forgotten about it before. Now the dormitory facilities are simple and cannot guarantee a desk for each person. She doesn't want to squeeze with others.

When she was in college, she bought a desk that could be placed on the bed. There was plenty of space underneath, so she could easily put a quilt there without affecting her sleep, and she could also put books on the desk.

Lin Xiuyao understood what she meant, "Then wait until the day off, I'll give it a try, you go back and measure the bed."

Su Qingmeng nodded. She had wooden planks in her space, all made of ordinary wood, which would be just right for her. After dinner, they returned to their respective dormitories.

When Su Qingmeng returned, there was another person in the dormitory. She was beautiful, named Tang Qiuyu, a native of Beijing. She lived across from him, and He Rui slept in the bunk below him.

The four of them were chatting, and the eldest sister Wang Shanyue asked Su Qingmeng, "Was it your boyfriend who just sent you here?" Seeing her nod, she said enviously, "That's great. Your boyfriend even came to send you off. My boyfriend isn't that considerate."

She just told me about her situation: she has two sons and a daughter in her hometown, and her husband has a job.

Su Qingmeng: "My boyfriend was also admitted to Peking University, he is studying economics."

Wang Shanyue sighed, "You are all young and smart, but my husband is over 30 and can't keep up with the studies. We have children to support, so he has to work hard and can't go without an income."

When they talked about their family situation, He Rui and Tang Qiuyu did not interrupt, as they were both unmarried.

Another person came in, a family. The new classmate was young, and her mother was very welcoming. She distributed local specialties to them, saying, "My daughter is young, and this is her first time away from home. I need you to take good care of her!"

Wang Shanyue politely responded, "Everyone take care of each other." She is a warm-hearted older sister.

The new classmate was a little embarrassed and introduced herself, "My name is Qiu Ling, I'm 17 years old, and I hope we can study and make progress together in the future."

Su Qingmeng also took out mountain products from the cabinet, including hazelnuts and pine nuts, and gave each person a handful.

In the evening, two classmates who went out for a stroll and a local arrived. They were Huang Xi, Bai Yushuang, and local Gao Qin.

All the people in the dormitory are already there. They all got to know each other and were arranged according to age. It turned out that this was the norm in every dormitory in every era.

Su Qingmeng ranks fourth, the eldest Wang Shanyue is 29 years old, the second Gao Qin is 26 years old, the third He Rui is 21 years old, the fifth Tang Qiuyu is 20 years old, the sixth Huang Xi is 19 years old, the seventh Bai Yushuang is 18 years old, and the eighth Qiu Ling is 17 years old.

Tang Qiuyu, Huang Xi, He Rui, and Qiu Ling are from the Chinese Department.

Wang Shanyue, Bai Yushuang, and Gao Qin are from the philosophy department.

Eight people went to the cafeteria for dinner together. Su Qingmeng ordered noodles. The noodles were cooked in bowls and were quite chewy.

After eating, they returned to the dormitory. Su Qingmeng asked someone to get some hot water. He Rui and Qiu Ling responded. A long line formed in front of the hot water room. The three of them chatted while waiting in line. It turned out that He Rui had also been an educated youth in the countryside. She was very happy to know that Su Qingmeng had the same experience. "Where did you go to the countryside?"
