Chapter 30 Ji Daming locked up Wang Yuqing
The commune members gradually finished work and went home.
The wheat in the few acres of fields next to the Ji family's house was all harvested yesterday. Today, no commune members passed by the door after work, making it seem deserted and desolate.
Smoke rose from the kitchens of every household, and the sounds of pots and pans clattering echoed from the Zhou family next door.
The Ji family was quiet. Grandma Ji sat on a small stool by the door, feeling extremely uncomfortable. Suddenly, she called Ji Xiaoming over and whispered, "Your dad is probably still working late. Go to the production team leader's house and ask him where he is working. Call him back right away."
Xiao Ming nodded in agreement.
He was about to run away when Wang Yuqing called out to him, "What are you doing? Calling your dad back? What are you shouting for? You're just delaying his work points. Besides, what's the use of calling him over to a woman's business?"
Grandma Ji said worriedly, "Those Cao family members are not to be trifled with. If things get out of hand, Fourth Brother will be there to back you up."
Wang Yuqing smiled and said, "Grandma, I'll handle the trouble I caused myself. I don't need a man to back me up. Don't worry, even if a few people or a few dogs come, I can chase them away."
She forbade Ji Xiaoming to go, so Ji Xiaoming could only run to the path ahead and stand on a mound of earth, gazing into the distance.
Grandma Ji was extremely anxious. She wiped away her tears and angrily cursed, "Look at the Cao family! When something happens, the whole family stands together, united as one. And look at our family! The fourth son's second brother and sister-in-law are utterly despicable, and the third son is so timid that he gets bullied by his in-laws. He doesn't even try to stand up for us. They say that having many children means they won't be bullied by outsiders, but our children aren't united at all..."
Ji Daming stepped forward and said, "Grandma, don't be afraid, I'm here. I'll protect you."
Looking at Ji Daming's sensible appearance, Grandma Ji sighed deeply again: "Poor child, if only your biological father were here... there would be another person in the family who can take care of things."
Upon hearing this, Ji Daming lowered his head with reddened eyes.
Wang Yuqing knew that Grandma Ji was a pitiful person. She had only one son, who was Ji Xuening's father. In the end, her son and daughter-in-law were killed when the kiln collapsed.
The eldest grandson was accidentally injured and killed at a young age, and the eldest grandson's wife ran back to the city and abandoned her three children.
The second grandson and his wife looked down on her and the children, considering them a burden, and cruelly separated the family. The second grandson even voluntarily moved into his wife's family home, which made her faint with anger.
The third granddaughter married into the next production brigade, and has yet to have a child. She is mistreated terribly by her in-laws but dares not utter a word.
Only the youngest grandson remains at home, and he is the most filial. He shoulders the burden with his young shoulders. The other children have always been bullied by Cao Hao from the Cao family. Now that the Cao family is coming to settle accounts, there are few people in the Ji family who can stand up to them.
Just then, Ji Xiaoming ran back in a panic, panting heavily: "Grandma, I saw people coming, at least a dozen people..."
After saying that, he immediately picked up a piece of wood and stood in front of Wang Yuqing: "Mom, hide behind me later."
Despite his young age and thin frame, he knew how to protect people, like a little man, even though he was trembling with fear.
At this moment, Grandma Ji said, "Yuqing, I remember there's a knife under your bed in your room. It was left by Lao Si's great-grandfather. Take it out."
Wang Yuqing didn't think it was necessary to use a knife, but since Grandma Ji had already said so, she still got up and went inside to get it.
She had just entered the room and squatted down, reaching under the bed, when Ji Daming suddenly appeared in the doorway, quickly closed the door, locked it, and said, "Mom, you stay inside. You don't need to worry about what's happening outside."
Wang Yuqing shouted, "Great Ming!"
Ji Daming ignored her, turned around and ran out, closing the door to the main room behind him.
Wang Yuqing didn't even touch a knife, and found it a bit funny that she had been tricked into coming in by Grandma Ji. Despite being almost seventy years old, Grandma Ji was very clever.
Whether in her previous life or the original owner of the body, she was rarely loved and protected. Human hearts are made of flesh and blood; they can feel pain and warmth.
Although she wasn't the original owner of the body and was just a stranger to them, and her goal was to leave the Wang family so she could live a carefree life in the future, she was moved by the kindness of Grandma Ji and the three children during those few short days.
Wang Yuqing grabbed the doorknob and pulled hard, but couldn't open it at all. She even tried to ram the door with her body like in the TV series, but ended up with a terrible pain in her arm.
She shouted, "Grandma, open the door and let me out! What are you doing?"
Grandma Ji's aged yet loving voice came from outside the door: "Yuqing, you stay in the room and don't come out. Be a good girl."
Wang Yuqing could no longer hear the sounds outside clearly, but she could hear Ji Daming and Ji Xiaoming saying, "We'll protect Mom, get a thicker stick."
Grandma Ji scolded, "You two little brats, put down the stick right now! Who can you beat? When the servants come, you'll both come with me and apologize properly, understand?"
Ji Xiaoming pouted and cried, "Grandma, why should I apologize? That Cao Hao beats me up all the time. Last time he even stepped on my face. Once, he shoved me into cow dung. I wanted to kill him."
Ji Daming still preferred to listen to his grandmother. He threw away the stick and stood silently to the side.
Wang Yuqing felt that if she apologized like this, others would bully her even more, and next time, Cao Hao would still beat Ji Xiaoming.
She paced anxiously inside the room, then suddenly looked at the window. The window was too small to squeeze through, but she could peel back the plastic covering a little to see what was outside.
Cao Hao, whistling and holding a tree branch, led a large group of people to the Ji family's gate with a smug air.
Behind him were his parents, Cao Nongguo and Lin Meili, his grandmother Mao Chun, his brother Cao Jun, and his uncles, the three families.
Their spectacle naturally attracted many people to follow them and watch the show, even encouraging those who were still at home cooking and eating to come and watch the performance together.
Among them were Yuan Fang and Liu Li, who were the most enthusiastic to arrive. They passed by the door of Zhao Si and Qian Juan, the former production team leader, and called them over as well.
Yuan Fang was very excited and muttered to herself, "Someone will eventually teach you a lesson. Let's see if you can still be so sharp-tongued today."
She even tried to get close to the Cao family: "That Wang Yuqing, she's not like a proper young lady at all. She has a sharp tongue and is very unruly. I'm her elder, and she even hit me."
Chen E had been arguing with her son and daughter-in-law for the past few days and was in a bad mood, so she didn't have much of an appetite. Seeing that the whole family was heading towards the Ji family's house, she felt that something was wrong and quickly followed them.
She is very loyal. As she said last time, if the Cao family seeks revenge on Wang Yuqing, she will stand by Wang Yuqing's side, even though it will make her an enemy of the Cao family. She is still willing to help Wang Yuqing.
Her daughter-in-law scoffed, "She always wants to get involved in everything. What kind of person is she?"
Her son ate his cornmeal rice without saying a word, but instead placed a piece of cabbage in his wife's bowl as a gesture of goodwill.
