Chapter 91 Rough-looking Wang Shuo helps Tang Wan carry firewood

The brigade headquarters playground.

After finishing work, Tang Wan picked up a bundle of firewood and carried it on her shoulder. As she passed the playground, she saw the rough-looking man with a fierce face who was living in her house training the militia.

His voice was so loud and gruff that it made her eardrums hurt.

She didn't glance at him again, quickening her pace because she needed to get back to cook dinner, otherwise her mother-in-law would yell at her for deliberately slacking off outside.

Wang Shuo had just finished training. He was very thirsty and hungry. He turned around and saw Tang Wan.

Before he could even step forward, Liu Huo had already run up to him, beaming, "Sister Tang, how can you carry such a big bundle of firewood with such a small frame? Are you tired? Does it hurt? Let me help you."

After saying that, Liu Huo stepped forward and approached Tang Wan.

Tang Wan frowned and dodged away, her voice cold: "No need, I can carry it myself."

Undeterred, Liu tried to snatch the firewood from Tang Wan's shoulder, his hand rubbing against her shoulder intentionally or unintentionally for a while without taking the firewood off. He said in a glib tone, "I can't stand seeing young women like you doing such heavy work. If you had a man at home, I could help you."

Tang Wan was enraged: "Let go of me! Didn't you hear me?"

Liu Huo didn't retract his hand, and clicked his tongue, saying, "Tsk, Sister Tang, I'm just trying to be helpful. You're a martyr's family member, so it's only right that I help you. I can help you carry firewood, or even just gather firewood for you."

Several militiamen nearby watched the spectacle with smiles, since the combination of firewood and flames always led people to think of the wrong things.

Zhou Shan commented in a low voice: "This Tang Wan is from the city. She was fair-skinned when she first came, but she's gotten quite tanned now. She's still very pretty, with such good qualities. Even though she's a widow, quite a few men would be interested in her."

Wang Shuo kicked him and yelled, "Who told you to talk about other women behind their backs? Looking for a beating? What? Want to work overtime? Then hurry up and go home!"

He chased away several militiamen, and then rushed forward like an eagle snatching a chick, grabbing Liu Huo and pulling him aside, glaring at him angrily: "Liu Huo, what are you doing? Are you harassing a woman from your own family? Do you believe I'll shoot you?"

Liu Huo forcefully shook off Wang Shuo's hand, a little annoyed, but still smiling: "Instructor, you're exaggerating. I didn't harass Sister-in-law Tang. I was just trying to help her. She's a widow with no man in her family. We're from the same brigade, and I'm the militia company commander, so naturally I should take care of and help the family of a martyr."

"Are you blind or deaf? Can't you see they're unhappy? You still have the nerve to keep going, is this helping them? This is just being a scoundrel!"

Wang Shuo launched into a tirade, his voice booming.

Liu's face flushed red.

Wang Shuo ordered, "Aren't you going to apologize to them?"

Liu Huo smiled awkwardly and said to Tang Wan, "Sister Tang, I'm sorry, please don't mind. I just wanted to help you because you're a widow and have no one to help you at home."

Tang Wan raised her head, her face icy cold: "I don't have a man, and I don't need your help!"

Liu Huo: "..."

Wang Shuo chuckled, then growled sternly, "Listen to this, did you hear that? They don't need it. You were even a soldier, and look at you, you have no spirit or integrity whatsoever that a soldier should have. I look you up and down, left and right, and all I see is a greasy and sleazy appearance."

Liu Huo: "..."

He clenched his fists, swallowing his anger.

Wang Shuo said bluntly, "Aren't you going home yet? What, are you going to Tang Wan's house for dinner?"

After Liu Huo left, he snapped back to reality and glared at him fiercely. He grimaced, thinking that he, a soldier for eight years, had been scolded like a dog by a rude, uneducated brute!

After Liu Huo left, Wang Shuo said in the gentlest tone he had ever used, "Comrade Tang Wan, are you going home? I've just finished training, I'll carry this firewood for you."

"No need, I can manage on my own."

Tang Wan spoke coldly and walked straight ahead.

Wang Shuo quickly caught up, and seeing such a large bundle of firewood pressing on Tang Wan's tall and thin shoulders, he felt a little sorry for her. Moreover, the firewood looked like it might fall off at any moment.

He forcefully grabbed the firewood from behind and, before Tang Wan could react, easily hoisted it onto his shoulder.

He didn't touch Tang Wan at all, and when he was getting firewood, he kept a distance that was just enough to reach the firewood.

Tang Wan turned around, her delicate brows furrowed, about to give the man a good scolding. But then, the man smiled kindly at her and said in a low voice, "I'm going to eat your cooking later, and I feel bad about it, so I'll help you carry the firewood."

His eyes, his expression, and his tone of voice were not at all off-putting or repulsive; at most, his voice was too loud, even when he tried to lower it.

Tang Wan reached out and pressed her ear, saying to him, "Give it to me, I'll carry it myself."

Wang Shuo took a few steps back: "It's already on my shoulder, what am I going to do with it? Stop dawdling, when are we going to have dinner?"

He also noticed Tang Wan pressing her ear and speaking in her softest voice, "I'm staying at your house, I can't just eat and stay for free, I'll do all these chores from now on..."

The sound was muffled and indistinct to Tang Wan, like the sound of rough wood rubbing against a stone. She didn't know how to describe it, but it made her feel uncomfortable: "What did you say?"

Wang Shuo hunched his shoulders and deliberately lowered his voice to the hushed tone of a duck: "I'll do these chores from now on."

Tang Wan looked at his large frame, and how clumsy and silly he looked, which seemed quite funny. For once, her tone wasn't so cold: "Just speak normally."

Although they told him to be normal, he still tried to use a gentle tone, mixed with what he considered a sexy tone: "I'm a grown man, staying at your house, I can't just eat and stay for free. Tell me what chores you need to do in the future."

Tang Wan walked ahead and said, "You didn't eat and stay for free. Didn't you bring your own food? You stayed at my house... my mother-in-law's house, and the brigade headquarters gave you work points."

Wang Shuo: "..."

He thought for a moment and said, "Then I still have to eat your cooking. I can't cook, and it takes you time and effort to cook, so I'm still taking advantage of you. So, if you cook, I'll help you carry firewood, and we'll even things out."

Tang Wan didn't say anything.

Wang Shuo suddenly felt that his mind was quite sharp.

The person in front of her remained silent. He then asked her a few questions: How many work points do you earn a day? What do you eat for dinner? Are you hungry?

Tang Wan ignored her.

He chuckled a few times and then shut his mouth, but he was a real chatterbox and couldn't keep his mouth shut. He kept greeting people along the way, men and women, old and young, and even a few people playing in the mud.

He was, after all, a militia instructor assigned by the commune, and the commune members treated him politely, especially Lei Yongxia, who even invited him to her home for dinner.

He was about to agree when he remembered Tang Wan and quickly shook his head: "No, Auntie, you're too kind. I have a big appetite, and I'm afraid I'll eat it all up at your house. I brought my own food, so I'll eat it at the Peng family's house."

He was eager to try Tang Wan's cooking.
