Chapter 15: Spy

Chapter 15: Spy

Shen Zhao and Kong Qing knelt in the tent.

"Get up." Shen Zhongan said to Kong Qing.

Kong Qing glanced at Shen Zhao. The commander was still kneeling, so he didn't dare to stand up.

Shen Zhongan's deputy general advised: "This time we finally got away with it. Not only did we catch the Western Jue people off guard, but we also transported back most of the food and grass to the North Camp. This can be considered a good balance."

Shen Zhongan looked at Shen Zhao, “You say it yourself.”

Chen Yu took the lead and said, "I came here on my own, and it was my idea to go to the North Camp."

"Shut up!" Shen Zhongan scolded.

Chen Yu pursed her lips, holding the tea and giving Chen Zhao a look that told him to wish him the best.

"Cao Gu, go and take an inventory. I have something to say to these two siblings." Shen Zhongan said to the deputy general.

The deputy general knew that what remained was a family matter and he could not interfere, so he received the order and lifted the curtain and left.

As soon as Fang went out, a soldier outside the tent said that the water was ready and had been placed in Shen Zhao's tent.

Chen Yu hadn't had a proper bath since she entered the camp, and could only wipe herself secretly when everyone was asleep. Now she returned covered in blood, and she felt very uncomfortable as the blood dried on her body.

She looked at Shen Zhongan eagerly, waiting for him to speak.

Shen Zhongan turned his face away and waved his hand, saying, "Zhao'er, take your sister to your tent. Come over after you wash up. I have something to talk to you about."

After leaving the tent, Shen Yu went around to the back of Shen Zhao's tent, squatted under the tent and searched for a long time, then took out a bundle and patted it, "Fortunately it's still there."

Chen Zhao smiled, then shook his head helplessly and speechlessly. She hadn't changed this habit yet. She liked to hide things like a little mouse. She hid food when she was a child, but now no one knew what she had hidden.

Chen Yu raised her bag and said, "My clothes and banknotes are all inside."

Chen Zhao walked with her to the door of the tent and said, "Go in and wash. I'll watch over you. Soak your feet in warm water first before washing."

After walking such a short distance, both of them had a layer of snow on their heads and shoulders.

Shen Zhao stood in front of the tent, and the soldier found an umbrella for him to hold.

The conditions in the military camp are not as good as at home.

Fortunately, the soldier found a small wooden barrel for her, so that people could squeeze in.

Shen Yu soaked her cold feet in the water, feeling so comfortable that she couldn't help but sigh with satisfaction.

After washing for nearly half an hour, the water was almost cold before Shen Yu got up. After tidying up, she felt refreshed all over.

All the black marks on her face were washed off, and her porcelain-white little face was tucked into her cloak. Her hair had not been dried yet, and the half-wet hair was tied on top of her head.

Shen Zhao looked at her several times, and finally found her appearance pleasing to the eye, "You've lost weight."

“How can I not lose weight?” She complained as she walked, “You didn’t take me with you, I walked in a hurry and had no guide, so I couldn’t get into the city. I slept in trees and dilapidated temples, and ate a lot of dry food.”

Chen Zhao held an umbrella, and the two of them walked side by side to the main tent. The sand table in the tent was already full of people, and several deputy generals had red eyes from staying up all night.

After Shen Zhongan gave his orders, he let everyone go. He sat down with his horse and sword and said, "Ayu, tell me in detail what happened in the Xijuebei camp."

Shen Yu recounted what happened.

"I saw that the wind was blowing from the north, so I lit a fire on the south side of the granary. The wind carried the fire toward the camp. The fire looked big, but it didn't burn much food and grass. We brought back what we could carry, and we just lit a big fire for what we couldn't carry."

"Kong Qing blocked their horse trails in the rear, so they couldn't catch up. The grain carts were too heavy, and the roads were difficult to navigate in the snow and wind, so they came back a little late."

Shen Zhongan patted her shoulder as if he were his son, which was a silent approval.

Shen Zhongan couldn't help but think again, why wasn't it a boy? If a boy had followed him to fight on the battlefield, he wouldn't have felt so distressed.

"Cao Gu just counted the food and grass. Together with what you brought back, it can only last for two days at most. When will the food and grass from Changdu be delivered?"

"I'm afraid it will take another four or five days." Shen Yu said.

Shen Zhongan pondered in silence.

Chen Zhao said: "There are spies in the army. Several generals in the army know about the surprise attack last night, but we can't tell who it is yet. I'm afraid the Western Jue people know that we are short of food and grass, and they will launch a general attack after we run out of food in three days."

Shen Zhongan nodded. "I have sent three military reports in a row to report the food and grass situation, but Shengjing has not responded yet. We can't just wait like this. I have just discussed with the generals that we will move camp early tomorrow morning and retreat to Yanliang Pass. We need to survive these few days without food."

Chen Yu left the tent first, and when Chen Zhao returned, she was nowhere to be seen.

"Where is she?" Shen Zhao lifted the curtain and came out.

The soldier replied, "She said she had gone back to rest. If the general needs anything, please send someone to call her."

Shen Zhao walked for a long time before he found Shen Yu's tent. Just as he reached the door, a strong man lifted the curtain and came out. When he saw Shen Zhao, he immediately saluted and said, "General."

Shen Zhao nodded and opened his mouth, not knowing what Shen Yu's alias was in the army and not knowing how to ask.

I had to say, "Where's she?"

Yang Bang asked: "Who is it?"

"The new recruits in your camp."

"Oh." Yang Bang suddenly realized, "You mean Shan Paoer, he just went in and fell asleep."

Chen Zhao's eyebrows twitched. Good job, you country bumpkin!

He went straight into the tent and saw the person huddled at the foot of the bunk bed. His eyebrows couldn't help twitching again.

"You bastard." Shen Zhao shouted through gritted teeth.

The person in the corner of the dormitory was silent.

Several people in the tent didn't dare to breathe, only You Dazui answered, "He just came back this morning, and said he went to help other teams, and just went to bed."

Chen Zhao suddenly turned his head and was startled by the big mouth. He went forward and pulled Chen Yu up from the bunk bed, "Mountain Cannon, come with me."

Chen Yu followed behind in a daze, listening to Chen Zhao scolding her in front.

"You are a... a girl after all," he said in a low voice, "how would it be like to sleep on a bunk bed with a bunch of men?"

Chen Yu half-opened her eyes, "I slept in the corner, and covered myself with my own quilt. I acted in an emergency, and I am almost a man now."

Chen Zhao grabbed her head and took her back to his tent, where he pulled a curtain to separate the two of them. "You will rest here from today."
