Chapter 10
Tong Yufei entered the clinic and sat opposite Chen Ruchao. Ever since the suicide incident that Chen Ruchao caused and Mo Daoyan went abroad, Tong Yufei moved into the Mo family. Although the two families still visited each other, it was only with other people. Chen Ruchao rarely appeared in the sad place. Tong Yufei took into account the feelings of the Chen family and never visited the Chen family. The first time they met in a formal occasion was at the New Year's Eve dinner at Cuixianglou a year ago. The two families used to have New Year's Eve dinner together, but they had not had a meeting for three years for some reason. The reunion in the fourth year was actively promoted by Chen Ruchao. She said that the past was over and she hoped that the friendship between the two families would last forever.
At the banquet, Chen Ruchao went around the table to toast, and finally to Tong Yufei: "Miss Tong, I lost half my life, and you lost your grand wedding. We are even now."
Tong Yufei was slightly stunned. This was more appropriate for Mo Daoyan, but Chen Ruchao still suffered a loss. Whether there had been that incident or not, Mo Daoyan wouldn't have needed a grand wedding. "In love, we owe each other nothing."
Chen Ruchao smiled with his eyes curved: "From what you said, apart from the relationship, do I owe you, or do you owe me?"
Tong Yufei took a sip of wine and said, "Ms. Chen is really humorous."
Unlike Chen Jueyao, who took after his mother, Chen Ruchao was practically a spitting image of his father. Her oval face was uniformly contoured, but her eyes were upturned and her lips were fuller, giving her a flamboyant, sharp edge. The white coat neutralized some of her aggression, adding a touch of sophistication and competence. She performed a routine physical examination and blood test on Tong Yufei, diagnosing her with mild anemia. The symptoms of anemia were caused by irregular menstruation, which in turn stemmed from endocrine imbalances and hormonal disturbances caused by prolonged sleeplessness. She prescribed two courses of menstrual regulation tablets and Qi and blood-tonifying medication, advising Tong Yufei that medication alone wasn't enough and that she needed to improve her daily routine, ensure adequate sleep, and improve her nutrition.
Tong Yufei thought that grandma might ask a lot of questions, so she had to answer them. So she asked casually, "What should I pay attention to when preparing for pregnancy?"
"Are you so anxious to give him a child?"
Chen Ruchao's eyes darkened, he folded his arms, and leaned back in his chair. Perhaps he realized that his words were inappropriate, so he quickly straightened up.
"Don't overthink it. Most of the patients who ask you this question are those who have been having sex without contraception for many years and are still infertile. You are in poor health, but you don't put your health first, and you still want to keep your husband's family line going. It's a tragedy."
Chen Ruchao's words were a little sarcastic, but Tong Yufei didn't get angry. If she were a doctor, she would probably think that such an approach was extremely stupid. Chen Ruchao, who was used to seeing stupid people and stupid things, could have just watched coldly and didn't even need to say anything. She could have given a reminder out of professional kindness. However, at the moment, she was in the middle of the situation and could only bite the bullet and continue to act.
Tong Yufei pursed his lips and smiled, then said with a hint of mischief, "It's just a rainy day. What does Doctor Chen think I'm thinking?"
Chen Ruchao's face was as gloomy as water: "How long have you been having sex? Approximately how often?"
Tong Yu was stunned by the question. While she was married, they weren't actually married, and her life was no different from that of a single woman. When she and Mo Daoyan went to the Civil Affairs Bureau to get their marriage certificate, the staff gave them a "Premarital Education Handbook" to help newlyweds learn about married life. After getting the certificate, they took the bus back to the hotel where they had their wedding. Mo Daoyan was flipping through the handbook with great interest on the way. She casually glanced at it, her face flushing to the roots of her ears. The page was headlined with "What are the characteristics of sexual excitement in women?"
If she didn't know him, she would definitely think he was a dishonest hypocrite, who was upright inside and out, but was interested in indecent things.
When the bus stopped at the station, he put the book away and said with an unsatisfied expression that the educational manual contained everything he needed, and was rich, detailed and indispensable. The author had done a lot of homework, and it was a sign of social progress.
Now think about it, how could a government-issued popular science book be so offensive to public morals? A righteous heart leads to a righteous body, and a calm mind leads to clear vision. It was her ignorance and self-containedness that led to her blind spot in this area even today.
She was speechless after being asked twice before she said slowly, "Not long, the frequency is normal."
Chen Ruchao asked impatiently, "How long? How often?"
Tong Yufei remembered some married colleagues saying something about that, so he followed suit: "For about ten days, three or four times a day."
Chen Ruchao paused, but quickly returned to his consultation. "You're already worrying about pregnancy after just ten days. That's too hasty. Your anemia level won't affect conception. It'll take at least a year or two without any results. Don't worry about it any more. It's good to have a good eugenics mindset, but just in case, you can get a comprehensive checkup to rule out organic disease."
"Our company conducts annual employee health checks, and I don't have any other health problems."
"Then let's take care of our body first and go get the medicine."
The young nurse came in with her new number and found an opportunity to chat with Chen Ruchao: "Doctor Chen, why don't you wear perfume anymore? The other day this room was filled with the rich aroma of soy milk and almonds. It smelled so good."
Chen Ruchao said quietly, "You also know that the smell is strong. What if a patient has an allergic reaction?"
"Yes, you're so thoughtful. What a shame! This Dior Red Poison perfume has only been on the market for a few years. Its design emphasizes the integration of achievement and fashion. You're a young and promising deputy chief physician with decent taste in clothes. The friend who gave you the perfume really understands you. Is he a man with experience studying abroad?"
Chen Ruchao answered irrelevantly: "Have you booked all the appointments for this afternoon? Don't make any mistakes. The patient came from far away."
Tong Yufei returned to the public waiting area. Mo Daoyan was waiting for her with hot soy milk and steamed buns. "What did the doctor say?"
"Just take some medicine."
"Give me the prescription. I'll go get the medicine. You can eat something to fill your stomach."
"The doctor who treated me was Dr. Chen Ruchao, who was very professional."
“I see.”
Seeing that Mo Daoyan had no intention of going in to talk to Chen Ruchao, Tong Yufei handed him the prescription: "Let's go down together. I can't eat here."
The two of them reached the corner of the stairs, and Chen Ruchao's voice came from behind: "Mr. Mo, come over and talk?"
Tong Yufei tactfully stepped aside: "I'll go down and wait for you."
Mo Daoyan followed Chen Ruchao to the end of the corridor, passed through a glass door, and turned into an open-air rooftop. The midday sun was warm, covering the earth as if spring had returned. Chen Ruchao stretched lazily, stood three meters away from Mo Daoyan, unbuttoned his clothes, and took out a stainless steel cat's eye lighter and half a box of Ashima from his inner pocket. He pressed the button with ease, and a blue and yellow flame jumped out, swaying gently in the wind, lighting the cigarette between her fingers.
Chen Ruchao took a sip and blew out a puff of smoke. "Jueyao said you've been home four or five times and never eaten dinner. Do you think my mom's cooking is unpalatable, or do you think her daughter is annoying?"
Mo Daoyan stepped on the shadow under his feet: "You can think of it as the self-awareness of those who are disliked. It is human instinct to seek benefits and avoid harm. Just like now, if you hadn't seen me, your smile would be even brighter."
"Don't be so self-righteous, Mo Daoyan. The Chen Ruchao whose joys and sorrows were controlled by you has long since been cleansed and reborn. I'm a doctor who saves lives and has countless patients behind me. I'm not a young and ignorant fool who worries about you. Do you still want to feel guilty about the past and nail me to the pillar of shame forever, and treat that page as your medal of honor?"
"I have medals, professional ones, lots of them."
"narcissism."
Mo Daoyan looked at the chimney in the distance. White smoke billowed up, and the surroundings gradually became dim and unpredictable. "Doctor Chen, do you have any other advice?"
"It's not really advice, it's just advice. Don't put all the pressure on her to have a baby. It's unfair. Preparing for pregnancy requires a relaxed environment and a positive mindset. Excessive pressure can suppress the function of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, affecting the secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone, and hindering the ovaries' secretion of estrogen. She's your wife, and her health is one of your responsibilities. Even if you can't get pregnant, it doesn't mean it's her health that's the problem. You should see a men's doctor for a self-examination. Secondly, indulging in sex is not advisable, especially indulging for the sake of having children. You can't bully someone just because she can't say no."
After listening to Chen Ruchao's accusations, Mo Daoyan humbly accepted them: "I will keep them in mind and put them into practice."
"Thank you for the perfume, by the way. It's rude not to reciprocate. These words are my return of courtesy."
After Mo Daoyan got the medicine, he went downstairs and walked to the exit of the hospital outpatient department, intending to meet Tong Yufei. She did not wait by the door, but stood quietly in front of a bulletin board not far away, as if fascinated by something interesting. The light leaking through the gaps in the banyan leaves cast mottled shadows on her back, making her look a little lonely in the corner where pedestrians were in a hurry and no one cared.
She was looking at a poster promoting the musical "Wang Zhaojun Departs to the Frontier," a play by the city's song and dance troupe. The poster depicted Wang Zhaojun, clad in a red robe, embracing Huo Bu Si, as she journeyed into the desolate desert. Chen Jueyao played Zhaojun. Next to the poster was a notice announcing that medical staff honored in the hospital's annual performance awards would each receive two free tickets.
Mo Daoyan wasn't particularly interested in the performance, but he could buy her two tickets. "The lead actress is Dr. Chen's sister, a very talented actress. I'm sure you've already met her. Do you want to see her performance? You could find a colleague you're close to to go with you."
More than just seeing them, she was so familiar with this name and this face that she would never forget them!
Tong Yufei looked away: "This red robe is very festive to wear during the New Year, right?"
Mo Daoyan pondered. She was doing writing work and was originally connected with literature and art. But now it seemed that her artistic appreciation was not much higher than his. Her soy milk and buns were still untouched and had already gone cold. Food is the most important thing for people, so it is better to fill their stomachs first. There is a Huaxin Street at the north gate of the hospital. There are many old restaurants on the street with good blood-enriching food. He offered to take her there for dinner.
Tong Yufei stood still and asked, "Can we eat somewhere else?"
"Do you have a better recommendation?"
"There's a snack street in Dongfanghong Park, only a kilometer away. You can walk there. After eating, you can take a stroll and see the scenery in the park. I need to take pictures for my grandma, so this will save me some trouble. But if you think it's unhygienic, it's okay not to go."
During the time Mo Daoyan had been back, he'd either been going to restaurants with Qiao Zhuocheng or eating at home. He was far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. It had been a while since he'd last touched it, so going out for a meal might be a good idea. He nodded, turned back toward the Dongfanghong Zoo, and said slowly, "I bought the perfume that Doctor Chen is using, but it wasn't a gift. It's a different brand and style than what I gave you."
He went to visit Chen Huaili and his wife and brought a gift. Both for official and personal reasons, the Chen sisters were indispensable. Chen Jueyao was picky about him and the gifts he brought. After a lot of pickyness, she snatched away the perfume he brought for Tong Yufei. He couldn't argue with her and snatch it back in front of Teacher Chen and Teacher Yan, so it ended up in Chen Ruchao's place by accident. He didn't want to explain to Tong Yufei for fear that she would be misunderstood as having other intentions, but he couldn't deprive her of the respect she deserved.
Tong Yufei smiled and said, "I understand. A respectable Mr. Mo wouldn't do such a disgraceful thing."
"And you..."
This time she came to the hospital just to check for anemia, and preparing for pregnancy was just a formality. She even described him with details and described him as a pervert who indulged in his lust. Mo Daoyan wanted to correct her, but the words were on the tip of his tongue and he stopped. Well, ignorance is not a crime. Sooner or later, someone will teach her those knowledge about sex.
Tong Yufei pressed on: "Me what?"
Mo Daoyan stepped over a puddle and said, "Follow me."
Tong Yufei was speechless. He asked her to keep up, but her legs were so long that they seemed to be equipped with springs and she walked so fast. How could she keep up?
