Chapter 29

Chapter 29

Just as Xie Que was thinking, the sound of footsteps came from outside the door.

Xie's face changed, but he quickly reacted, threw the broom back, lay down on the ground, pushed himself back with his hands, and slid under the bed in one smooth movement.

Besides the bed for the cleaners to rest, there was only one closet in the cleaning room where one could hide. Jing Xiebai reacted even faster than Xie Que, moving several large trash cans closer to the bed while hiding in the closet. The bed in the cleaning room was made of an iron frame, and Xie Que had long arms and legs, so he would be easily discovered if he wasn't careful. He could only curl up, but the trash cans made the situation much more concealed.

The footsteps were getting closer, but Xie covered his mouth, breathed lightly, and thought about the escape route in his mind.

The cleaning room had a window, but it was guarded with bars. It was pitch black outside, and thinking of the missing door, Xie didn't think going through the window was a wise option. However, the cleaning room was small and cluttered, so if they were discovered, they would have to fight hard.

Thinking of this, Xie took a deep breath, and beads of sweat the size of beans dripped from his forehead and fell silently to the ground.

He could only pray that the person coming in was not a ghost but a human, but Xie closed his eyes.

With a "creak", the door was opened from the outside and then closed with a "bang".

Three creatures that were indistinguishable came into the cleaning room. From Xie Que's angle, he could only see their worn cloth shoes and purple ankles.

Corpse?

Xie was a little confused, and the ankle of the person on the other side was too thin. It looked like a bamboo pole that had been exposed to wind and rain, as if it would break if you applied any force.

They did not communicate with each other, picked up their tools in silence, and went out in silence.

Not finding them, Xie breathed a sigh of relief and was about to crawl out from under the bed.

Unexpectedly, they came back, and the moment the door opened, half of Xie Que's body was outside. His face changed, and he suddenly shrank back, his back hitting the wall with a dull sound, mixed with the creaking sound of the door opening, which hit Xie Que hard in the heart.

Please don’t be discovered, Xie endured the pain in his back and prayed in his heart.

This time, they did not leave immediately after coming in, but walked around the room several times, as if looking for something.

Xie stared at the moving feet with an anxious look and panic in his eyes.

There was a "bang" sound, but Xie looked at the feet that stopped beside the bed, and was so nervous that he forgot to breathe.

They lay on the bed, rustling, as if looking for something.

Three bodies were pressed against the hardwood board, but Xie looked up at the slightly concave board, his brain thinking rapidly.

What are they looking for? They have already got their tools, what else is there to look for?

Xie's brain was working quickly, but he still couldn't think of anything that required him to go back and get.

After searching for about five minutes, they finally went out.

Only after making sure they would not come back did Xie Que crawl out from under the bed.

Jing Xiebai came out immediately after they left, and was now looking at the messy bed in thought.

Xie leaned against the wall, breathing heavily. His mind was a little off after the adrenaline surge. After a while, he asked, "What was that just now?"

Jing Xiebai: "A corpse transformed into a corpse."

Xie Que:?

evil Dead?

He blinked and looked at Jing Xiebai with a puzzled expression. His face was covered with dust and looked disheveled.

Jing Xiebai said, "If I'm not mistaken, the ghost girl's obsession in her lifetime was this place. She won't appear until she has experienced all her memories."

All evil spirits have obsessions. For example, the obsession of the God of Death is the unfinished ghost marriage. Now they have fallen into the memories of the evil spirit, and they don’t know what the evil spirit’s obsession is, so they can only follow it.

Jing Xiebai continued to explain, "A corpse buried in the ground won't transform into a corpse unless it's in a corpse-raising ground. However, if it's controlled by resentment, it could easily transform into a corpse."

The corpse's combat power increases sharply after transformation, and it is controlled by the master of resentment, making it a very good puppet.

Xie Que's heart sank. Seeing Jing Xiebai still staring at the iron bed, he asked, "What's wrong? Did you find out what they're looking for?"

Jing Xiebai nodded and said, "I just opened the wardrobe a crack. If I'm not mistaken, they should be holding scapegoats."

Scapegoat?

Xie frowned. He knew about scapegoat dolls. In the past, most people were superstitious and believed that their sins were serious and would affect their future life, so they used scapegoat dolls to ward off disasters.

Xie Que: "What are they doing with the scapegoat? This kind of yin-filled thing can't ward off disasters, it can only harm people!"

The scapegoat doll may seem like a ward off disasters, but it is actually a gathering place for negative energy. Carrying it with you for a long time will absorb your positive energy.

Jing Xiebai did not answer Xie Que. It would be okay if only one or two people used scapegoat dolls, but it would be troublesome if hundreds or thousands of people used scapegoat dolls. However, he was afraid that there were more than three people in this hospital who used scapegoat dolls.

"Don't worry about it for now, let's go out and take a look." They have to hurry to find the evil ghost.

Jing Xiebai glanced around the cleaning room again, making sure nothing was left out, and then pulled Xie Que out together. The room outside the door looked increasingly shabby; the tiles had disappeared, replaced by dusty flagstones.

"Where are we going?" Xie pointed to the hospital map on the wall, looked around, and tore the map down after making sure there was no one around.

Jing Xiebai reached out to take the map and said, "There definitely weren't buildings this tall a hundred years ago. Let's hurry up and take a look."

The first floor of the hospital is the payment hall, and the various departments are located above the first floor.

"The 15th floor is the highest, is it the obstetrics and gynecology department?" Xie Que looked at the map and frowned unconsciously. After experiencing the ghost marriage, he became much more sensitive to matters such as children, and was afraid of having another blood fetus.

"Well, let's take the elevator and save some time." Jing Xiebai put the map away and pulled Xie Que to take the elevator.

Time was urgent and they didn't care whether they would encounter the corpses.

Fortunately, they were lucky and there was no body inside when the elevator door opened.

"Check every floor?" Xie pressed the elevator button for the fifteenth floor.

"No, there's not enough time." Jing Xiebai quickly rejected it. Time was going back too fast, and they didn't have time to look at it layer by layer.

The reason why you choose to go to the obstetrics and gynecology department is because the newborn fetus is in a state where yang and yin are mixed, and this state is most likely to be possessed by yin objects.

“Ding——” We arrived at the fifteenth floor.

Before the elevator door was fully opened, Xie heard the cry of a newborn baby.

The crying was so sharp and piercing that it gave the listeners a headache.

"Let's follow the sound and find someone. Don't get caught." Jing Xiebai was also feeling uncomfortable. He frowned unconsciously, and a hint of annoyance flashed in his eyes. Xie nodded and walked out of the elevator.

Unlike the deserted first floor, this place was brightly lit, and in the nearby delivery room, there were many bodies coming in and out. They noticed the elevator door open and a corpse looking towards them.

"Don't make a sound!" Jing Xiebai covered Xie Que's mouth and dragged him into a delivery room next door.

There was no light in the room, only a few rays of light came in through the glass on the door. With the help of the light, Xie could clearly see a bulge on the bed behind the curtain.

It was very quiet, so quiet that it was a little eerie.

Xie Que was half-held in Jing Xiebai's arms, his back pressed tightly against his chest, so close that they could hear each other's heartbeats. He felt a little impatient and poked Jing Xiebai's arm, signaling him to let go.

"Hush!" Jing Xiebai stared at the glass on the door, leaned over slightly, and whispered softly into Xie Que's ear, "It's outside."

As soon as he finished speaking, he heard a loud "bang".

Xie suddenly looked up.

The corpse's purple face was pressed tightly against the glass, its facial features compressed and deformed, its eyes darting around, looking around the room.

Jing Xiebai hugged Xie Que and shrank back, holding the door handle with his left hand, guarding against the corpse opening the door.

Xie, however, swallowed nervously, keeping an eye on the door while thinking about what would happen if the body was discovered.

During the last ghost marriage, they weren't attacked by the paper figurines at the beginning, but only after they had disrupted the plan of the Death God. This meant that as long as they didn't disrupt the memory, they wouldn't be attacked. However, since they didn't play a role in the memory at the moment, being discovered by the corpse would be equivalent to destroying the memory.

Xie's heart sank, and he prayed silently in his heart that he would not be discovered.

Those few seconds felt like a lifetime.

Fortunately, the corpse did not open the door in the end. It just took a few looks and left.

"Huh..." Xie Que broke free from Jing Xiebai's hand that was covering his mouth and breathed deeply. The crisis was temporarily resolved, and he felt a little relieved.

"There's something on the bed."

Xie quickly adjusted his state, tugged at the corner of Jing Xiebai's clothes, and gestured for him to look at the bed. He hadn't looked carefully just now, and now he realized that there was a soul standing beside the bed, staring at them.

"It's a child." Xie Que held the talisman paper in his hand and walked a few steps inside, wanting to see more clearly.

"There's also a scapegoat." Xie Que frowned and retreated back to Jing Xiebai. A child's soul enters the body at birth, and the scapegoat is trying to steal the child's body.

"Is this hospital housing evil creatures?"

Considering the corpse on the bed, Xie Que and Jing Xiebai did not get too close to the bed. They observed carefully from a distance that was neither too far nor too close.

"Yeah." Jing Xiebai nodded and pulled Xie Que out: "Go out first." The room was too narrow, and if they were discovered they would have no choice but to fight.

Occasionally, a corpse would pass by outside the ward, with yellowed medical records in its blue-gray hands. Inside the ward were countless scapegoats, their weird faces filled with greed for life. The whole scene was grotesque and absurd.

Xie Que and Jing Xiebai avoided the corpses and searched the entire fifteenth floor. Finally, the two hid in an empty ward to sort out their clues.
