Chapter 32
"Tell them to be more careful. Chen Shan is not easy to deal with."
Jing Xiebai's spiritual energy was consumed too much, and his body was so weak that he could only speak weakly.
Lu Jueqiu frowned and glanced at Jing Xiebai worriedly: "Are you still okay? Why don't you take a rest for a night?"
There are many things waiting for Jing Xiebai to deal with, but seeing his current state, Lu Jueqiu does not support Jing Xiebai to continue working.
"It's okay, just tell me what you want to say."
Jing Xiebai is used to high-intensity work. He has been accepting commissions continuously since he started college. Within a year, he secured the position of the head of the Jing family. Even the elders in the family could not find any fault with him.
"OK."
Lu Jueqiu didn't insist anymore and helped Jing Xiebai to help Xie Que into the car.
"Where are you going back to?" Lu Jueqiu is not a good driver, so he is always picked up by a driver when he goes out.
"Go back to me." The blood jade's backlash was so severe that even with the talisman paper to save his life, Xie Que's condition wasn't much better. He was completely dazed and on the verge of passing out. Fortunately, Jing Xiebai had brought back a lot of elixirs from the Jing family last time, otherwise things would have been much more difficult.
The three of them stopped talking, and the car fell silent for a moment. Jing Xiebai opened the car window, and the whistling wind blew away the fatigue of the day. He leaned back in the seat, recalling the process of exorcism today in his mind.
Ever since he discovered the unusual relationship between the Punishment Department and Xie Que, or rather, Xie Que's previous life, Jing Xiebai had paid extra attention to Xie Que. He recalled the events of that day and found the most intriguing thing to be the jade he had given to Xie Que.
Jing Xiebai got the jade from a fortune teller when he was in junior high school. At that time, Jing Xiebai's school was organizing a hiking trip, and when they passed by a temple, the fortune teller stopped him and said he wanted to tell his fortune.
The first lesson for an exorcist is fortune-telling. Jing Xiebai had no intention of listening to his fortune-telling and turned away. However, the master was not angry and told him that he would come back to find him within three hours.
Jing Xiebai didn't take his words to heart at the time, but he didn't expect that he would be hit by a pear tree on the side of the road as soon as he left the temple. On the way back, he got separated from the main group and lost his way. He was on the road until late at night, and finally met the fortune teller again.
Jing Xiebai knew this fortune had to be told, so he had no objections. He just wanted to see what the fortune teller could say. To his surprise, the fortune teller's predictions were all things that even someone who had only been reading for two or three days could see through. Jing Xiebai was furious and was about to expose the fortune teller's position when the fortune teller produced a jade pendant to apologize, saying his experience was too limited to predict anything profound.
The jade was fine, mellow in color, clear and cool like the moon, able to both gather the mind and energy and turn misfortune into fortune. Seeing this, Jing Xiebai didn't know what to say. It was already late at night, so he took the jade and went home.
Later, Jing's father and mother also looked at the jade, and there was nothing special about it. Jing Xiebai didn't like to wear jade, so he just put it away for so many years. If he hadn't had any treasure that could ward off evil spirits when he first met Xie Que, he wouldn't have thought of this jade.
To be honest, if it weren't for the jade that pawned for Xie Que today, Jing Xiebai really wouldn't be sure he could save Xie Que.
Thinking of this, Jing Xiebai tilted his head and slowly looked at Xie Que from top to bottom.
Xie was sweating profusely due to the backlash. He huddled up in his chair, his brow furrowed. The wound on his palm hadn't been bandaged yet. His face was extremely pale from the excessive blood loss, and he looked very fragile in the dim light.
Jing Xiebai sighed lightly, took a blanket from the trunk and covered Xie Que with it, then closed the car window.
When he got home, Jing Xiebai took a few pieces of talisman paper from the workshop and pasted them on the door. He also placed an altar in the south side of the room and asked Xie Que to light the incense himself. He was relieved only after making sure that the incense had burned out normally.
"Please bandage him up."
Jing Xiebai brought a medical kit and handed it to Lu Jueqiu, then collapsed on the sofa, looking half-dead.
"Are you sure you don't want to take a break first? You'll have a lot to do later."
Lu Jueqiu took out gauze from the corner of the medical box and glanced at Jing Xiebai worriedly.
"It's okay. Tell me about the current situation. We can talk about the evil spirit tomorrow."
"Forget it, rest first, there's no rush." Lu Jueqiu quickly treated the wound. He handed the medical kit to Jing Xiebai and said, "Get some rest. I'll keep an eye on him tonight."
Things at the hospital haven't been resolved yet, so tonight is destined to be a sleepless night. Lu Jueqiu is used to staying up late, so he didn't think it was a big deal.
"Okay, I'll come find you tomorrow morning."
Jing Xiebai didn't argue with him. After settling Xie Que down, he fell asleep on the sofa.
Xie, however, had a restless sleep that night, having had several nightmares in a row. When he woke up, he found it was already ten o'clock in the morning. He sat up in bed, staring at the unfamiliar room for a few seconds before realizing that he had fainted the night before. He only remembered that Jing Xiebai had taken him away from the hospital at the end, and he knew nothing else.
Xie Que rubbed his head, got out of bed and opened the curtains. It was already summer, and the sun shone through the glass windows into the house, making people feel warm all over.
"woke up?"
Xie turned around and saw Jing Xiebai leaning against the door with messy hair, obviously having just woken up.
"Go wash up. I'll order breakfast." Jing Xiebai had a good sleep last night and had regained a lot of energy. He ordered breakfast, got Xie Que a new toothbrush, and even took the time to take a shower.
This was not the first time that Xie Que had entered Jing Xie Bai's house. He had been here several times before to take care of Fubao. The house was decorated in a simple and elegant style, and was more popular than Xie Que's house.
Thinking that he hadn't seen Fubao for a long time, Xie asked where Fubao was.
"Sent to my aunt's house"
Jing Xiebai had just finished taking a shower and came out wearing a casual sleeveless vest, wiping his hair with a towel.
Xie nodded and asked, "What are your plans for today?"
"Go find Lu Jueqiu. He'll tell us about the evil spirit from yesterday." Jing Xiebai dried his hair and threw the towel into the laundry basket. He opened the door and grabbed the takeaway. "Let's eat. Afterwards, we'll go find him."
"OK."
Xie ordered a bowl of wonton stew, and the two of them sat at the dining table and ate quietly.
Lu Jueqiu stayed in the hospital all night last night, but didn't even see Chen Shan. When Xie Que and the others went to look for him, he was typing away on his computer.
"What's wrong?" Jing Xiebai pulled a chair over and sat down next to Lu Jueqiu. "Tell me everything that happened last night."
"Okay, wait a minute." Lu Jueqiu made an irritable "tsk" sound, and the keyboard tapping became louder and louder.
"What's going on?" Xie looked at the screen curiously. It was full of codes that he couldn't understand.
"There are too many commissions, and the forum has crashed." Lu Jueqiu was woken up by a phone call after only a few hours of sleep. His resentment was probably greater than that of a ghost.
Xie nodded, said nothing more, and waited patiently for Lu Jueqiu to fix the forum.
After about half an hour, the keyboard tapping finally stopped. Lu Jueqiu lay back on the gaming chair, his slender fingers brushing his hair, revealing his entire face.
"Are you done?" Jing Xiebai threw a piece of bread to Lu Jueqiu, "Eat while you talk, don't waste time."
Lu Jueqiu stood up and took a sip of water: "Which one do you want to hear first?"
"Hospital."
"Okay." Lu Jueqiu took out his phone and sent a few pictures to the group. "I took pictures of the information. You can take a look."
"A hundred years ago, a Taoist priest accidentally discovered a mysterious magic trick for exchanging lives." Lu Jueqiu took a bite of bread and continued, "She originally wanted to borrow the lives of the villagers, but was discovered by a man who ran a village clinic."
The man knew he was no match for the Taoist priest and wanted to escape overnight, but he was too late. In the end, the Taoist priest failed to borrow his life and instead became possessed and turned into a ghost.
"How did she know about this kind of sorcery?" Xie Que placed his phone on the table and pointed at one of the pictures. "Logically speaking, even if there were sorcery in that era, it would have been at most minor spells that cursed people and brought bad luck. Spells like this that involve exchanging lives shouldn't have been known to anyone."
"Chen Shan told her." Jing Xiebai tapped the table, a look of understanding flashing across his face. "This also explains why Chen Shan knew about the existence of evil spirits."
Chen Shan's desire to refine the evil spirit was not a sudden idea. He had already paved the way for this a hundred years ago. But how did Chen Shan learn about this evil magic?
The prevalence of sorcery was three hundred years ago, and because of its enormous influence, almost every exorcist has heard of the events of that time. But Chen Shan was, after all, a ghost child who appeared only a hundred years ago. How did he learn so much about sorcery?
"Can you tell me about what happened back then?" Xie Que looked up at Jing Xiebai, "Maybe there is something we haven't noticed." He always felt that things were not that simple.
"Okay." Jing Xiebai sent a map to the group, leaned closer to Xie Que, and pointed to him, "The place where the accident happened is in a village in the northwest."
It's a very remote place. If that incident hadn't happened, Jing Xiebai would probably never have known about this place in his life.
"Back then, a newly-minted exorcist from our family went there for training. He noticed something was amiss and immediately asked the head of the family to come over." Jing Xiebai had a fairly comprehensive understanding of what happened. "After we dealt with it, we thought everything was fine, but who would have thought that those evil techniques would spread out."
"How did it get out?" Xie keenly noticed something was wrong, and his intuition told him that this was the key to the matter.
"I don't know." Jing Xiebai sighed, his tone somewhat dull. "Almost all the exorcists were involved in what happened back then. It's not easy to find the person who spread the evil technique."
Back then, the Four Great Masters lacked the influence they have today, and many experts were unwilling to submit to their teachings. The book of sorcery in the hands of the Four Great Masters undoubtedly resented it, but at the time, they were busy exorcising evil spirits and no one raised the issue. Unexpectedly, it eventually leaked. Because of this incident, the reputation of the Four Great Masters plummeted. Unfortunately, the source of the sorcery was never discovered.
"That means, even if the book of witchcraft is burned, at least one person will remember all of its contents." Xie frowned, a hint of confusion in his eyes. "The person who can avoid the witchcraft book you have come into contact with must have a good cultivation level. But he doesn't practice witchcraft himself and only spreads it. What's his intention?"
"Refine evil spirits." Lu Jueqiu suddenly said, "Nine out of ten people who practice evil arts will go astray, and the inevitable result is an increase in evil spirits. Isn't this a perfect opportunity to refine evil spirits?"
"That's right." Jing Xiebai nodded and looked at Lu Jueqiu approvingly, "It's just that the man didn't get what he wanted in the end." In order to save their reputation, the four major families put a lot of effort into exorcism, and also laid the foundation for their later voice among the exorcists.
Xie nodded: "If that's the case, then we can't rule out the possibility that the person preserved the evil magic and it was discovered by Chen Shan."
Otherwise, it is hard to explain how Chen Shan knew about such an ancient evil magic.
Chen Shan is obviously much smarter than the man who cast the evil spell before. He has been planning for a hundred years. If he had not met Xie Que, the exorcist would probably still be fooled by him.
Thinking of this, Jing Xiebai looked at Xie Que meaningfully. He was really curious about who the ghost exorcist in Xie Que's family was and who had arranged everything in the dark.
"I have another piece of news to tell you." Lu Jueqiu stood up and threw the packaging bag into the trash can, then took a can of milk from the refrigerator.
"I heard from my mother that she will gather the four families for a meeting next week to discuss countermeasures."
"Huh? Why didn't anyone inform me about this?" Jing Xiebai was stunned and a little skeptical. "Are you sure you heard it right?"
"I heard it right, but I don't know why they didn't discuss it with us."
Unlike Jing Xiebai, Lu Jueqiu hadn't yet taken over the position of head of the family, but he was in charge of all matters, big and small. Logically, they couldn't have been unaware of this, but the parents of both sides tacitly avoided the two of them.
"I'll ask about this later." Jing Xiebai glanced at Xie Que beside him, "Yucheng's high-speed train is leaving at 11 a.m. now, so it should be arriving soon."
"Huh?" Xie was still thinking about the evil magic and didn't react for a while.
"Knock——" There was a knock on the door from outside.
"I said Yu Cheng is coming." Jing Xiebai stood up, picked up the mobile phone on the table, walked to the entrance and opened the door.
Jing Yucheng was still wearing the clothes he had worn two days ago, and he didn't look tired despite running back and forth.
"Big brother."
"Come in." Jing Xiebai nodded to Jing Yucheng.
