Su Tian slept soundly in her room, while the others worked until eleven o'clock before they could leave. They couldn't leave until they had finished harvesting the paddy fields under their responsibility.
In particular, several newly arrived educated youths were cutting their hands or feet because they didn't know how to use the sickle when they went to the fields to harvest rice for the first time.
Even the sickle would sometimes fly out of its hand while being used, and then you'd have to stumble and fall to retrieve it.
The older educated youth are doing well; they've long since adapted to this harvesting intensity. They work well with the older men and women in the village, and they can all finish harvesting on time before the end of the workday.
He Hua had just returned to the educated youth settlement when she saw Chen Gang had also returned. She immediately burst into tears with watery eyes and said, "Brother Chen Gang, I'm so miserable, I'm so tired. I want to go home. This place is no place for a human being."
Harvesting rice is so tiring. There are leeches, flying insects, and bedbugs in the fields, and it's so hot and sunny. I can't keep going, what should I do? I'm so hungry now.
Chen Gang found the noise in his ears very annoying and became a little impatient. All he wanted to do was wash his feet and face, find a stool, and sit down to rest for a while.
But why did He Hua stop him before they even reached the entrance of the educated youth settlement? He was tired, suffering, and hungry too! What could he do?
Seeing his beloved like this, he felt a little sorry for her, so he still comforted her, saying, "Let's rest and have lunch first, and then we'll go find the team leader to assign us our respective jobs, okay?"
"Brother Chen Gang, I knew you had a way. The most hateful one is Su Tian. She works so fast, but she never thought of coming to help us."
We used to consider her a friend. She wouldn't share the delicious food she cooked with us, nor would she share her clothes or other belongings with us.
"She used to want to give us all the good things, but now even getting a piece of candy from her is a luxury," He Hua said through gritted teeth.
Chen Gang was also furious about Su Tian's change, considering how good he had been to her before, always taking care of her and indulging her every whim.
He would eat the food she didn't want, and he would take the things she didn't use home for his family to use. He even said that he had borrowed the money and tickets.
She used to desperately try to force him to use her things, telling him to be generous. But now she keeps her distance from him, and they act like strangers when they run into each other.
Thinking of Su Tian who used to have eyes only for him, he hated Su Tian even more now. Su Tian now looked at him like he was a pile of dog shit.
Today it was Zheng Yuanyuan and Xie Qiuying's turn to cook. They came back an hour early and had already cooked porridge, stir-fried vegetables and dried radishes, and steamed a pot of twenty sweet potatoes.
The older educated youth ate with great relish because they were so hungry.
The newly arrived educated youths were a little unappetized by the simple meal, which had no oil or meat, but they couldn't refuse to eat it because they had to go harvest in the afternoon.
They all made the most of their time to eat and get a good night's sleep so they would have the energy to work in the afternoon.
When He Hua and Chen Gang saw that the food was so bland, with no meat and no oil, they cursed Su Tian in their hearts again.
If Su Tian knew what they were doing, she could only say that they were the most shameless people in the world.
Su Tian slept until 3 p.m., and was full of energy.
Su Tian took out the remaining two meat buns from her spatial storage and made a bowl of sweet potato soup. Just as she was about to eat, she heard a knock on the door. When she opened the door, she saw He Hua and Chen Gang.
He Hua smiled obsequiously and said, "Su Tian, we didn't eat enough at noon, do you have anything else to eat?"
Su Tian felt a surge of contempt and immediately retorted, "I've discovered that you're really shameless. Do I owe you anything? I'm neither your father nor your mother, so why are you asking me for food?"
"What does it matter to me if you're not full? My food didn't grow on trees, you're really giving me the time of day. Get out of here right now, and don't stand outside my room, it's bad luck for me."
After Su Tian finished speaking, she closed the door and started eating steamed buns and drinking sweet soup.
This annoying guy didn't bother her at all; she'd give him a good dressing down next time. If all else fails, she'd just put a sack over their heads tonight. Hehe…
After finishing her meal, Su Tian sat down to rest for a while. She checked her watch; it was 3:50. She locked the door and headed towards the drying ground.
Having just been humiliated, He Hua and Chen Gang could only leave in a huff.
"Brother Chen Gang, look at Su Tian. I only asked one question, and she cursed at me ten times."
"Shouldn't we be together? That way, she'll make sure you eat and drink well?" He Hua whispered.
"He Hua, she's still angry. She'll be fine once she calms down."
The other educated youth found the two men increasingly unbelievable and just wanted to stay away from them, fearing that they would shamelessly ask them for food as well.
It was time to start work again, and Su Tian was still in the same group as Aunt Song. As soon as they arrived in the field, they immediately got to work.
The afternoon sun was still very strong, and Su Tian applied sunscreen as she did in the morning, wearing a straw hat and a washcloth.
Put on gloves and start cutting quickly.
Over here, He Hua and Chen Gang found the brigade leader and said that they were too slow at cutting rice and couldn't learn how, so they wanted to bundle rice stalks instead.
The team leader had no choice but to accept the situation and replace the rice stalks for them. The work points for bundling the rice stalks were reduced by a little, only five centimeters. Five centimeters it is, they didn't ask for more.
By 6 p.m., Su Tian was the first to finish again. Aunt Song was very proud: "Su Tian, it's so great to work in the same group as you. We can go back to cook at 6 p.m., while I don't finish until 7 p.m. when I work with others."
Being in the same group as you is awesome, haha.
"Aunt Song, you're really amazing! It's getting late, let's go back and cook dinner."
He Hua saw that Su Tian was the first to leave, so she threw the rice stalks on the ground and splashed water on others.
"Hey, what are you doing? Did the rice stalks upset you? What kind of person are you? You can't do anything right, you're just here to freeload," Aunt Ma complained.
