When Lu Xiao and Zhang Shang returned to the educated youth settlement, the people there hadn't finished work yet.
"Brother Zhang Shang, you guys rode your bikes to town? Why didn't you call me to come along?"
If you buy anything delicious, I want to eat it too.
"I bought a few meat buns, do you want some?" Zhang Shang asked her.
"Eat. A bowl of plain porridge in the morning is too bland. Give me three meat buns."
"Okay, take it yourself." Zhang Shang opened the bag for her to take.
She took three and gave one to Liu Hongying.
Lu Xiao carried all their things to the room, hung the steamed buns and braised pork on the handlebars, and waited for Su Tian to return.
"Zhang Shang, you actually look quite good in this hat."
"Okay, I'll go back to my room and sit for a while. You can go back first."
After saying that, he returned to his room.
Lu Xiao put the books he bought on the table and excitedly said to Zhang Shang, "Now I can read books whenever I'm bored."
Zhang Shang nodded and then began packing his luggage. Seeing Zhang Shang's serious expression, Lu Xiao laughed and said, "You really are an old-fashioned person. You're not like a young person at all. All you do is tidy up this and that all day long."
Zhang Shang looked up at him and said, "I'm just used to being organized." Lu Xiao pursed his lips, picked up a book, and started flipping through it.
Just then, a commotion arose outside. Lu Xiao and Zhang Shang exchanged a glance, then went out of the room to check what was happening.
He Hua and Song Dawang were arguing. Song Dawang seemed to be acting like a scoundrel, while He Hua appeared somewhat angry.
"Honey, come home with me. Mom's waiting for us to eat at home."
"Get out! Who's your wife? Get out of here right now!"
“My mom says you are, so you’d better come back with me right now.”
He Hua was furious and grabbed a stick from the surroundings, swinging it at Song Dawang.
Song Dawang ran away in fear, and He Hua threw down the stick and returned to her room with a gloomy expression.
"What's going on?" Lu Xiao nudged Zhang Shang.
"None of your business. I'm leaving, going back to my room."
"Son, why are you back again? Where is that bitch?"
"Mom, she refuses to come back and even tried to hit me with a stick," Song Dawang said angrily.
"It's okay, if she hits you, just run away. Once she starts work, pretend to help her and keep bothering her."
"Okay, I'll go this afternoon."
The farce at the educated youth compound had just ended when Su Tian and Ma Chunling returned after class.
Lu Xiao spotted Su Tian with his sharp eyes. He came out of the room, pushed his bicycle, and walked up to her, saying happily, "You're back? I packed you some braised pork and a few meat buns. Do you want some?"
"Eat, why not eat when there's meat to eat?" Su Tian said with a smile, looking at the cheerful Lu Xiao.
"Wait a minute, let me cook some rice and stir-fry a few dishes so we can eat together."
"Then eat a steamed bun first before you get busy."
"Okay, thank you."
"Then I'll help start the fire." After saying that, Lu Xiao walked over to the stove and started the fire.
Su Tian washed the rice and put it in the pot, while also preparing to cook egg drop soup on another stove.
The old hen lays one egg every day, and she's accumulated more than a dozen eggs.
She also went to the vegetable garden and picked some scallions and a winter melon. She washed the scallions, chopped them into sections, and threw them into the egg drop soup.
She hadn't finished the cured meat that Jian Qingshan had given her last time, so she stir-fried it with winter melon, making another dish.
As Lu Xiao tended the fire, he watched Su Tian's busy figure and grew increasingly impressed.
Amazing! Su Zhiqing can do everything. Whoever marries her will be the happiest person.
Unfortunately, he was not good enough for Su Tian.
Half an hour later, the food was ready.
"Ha, it smells delicious. You've worked hard, Su Zhiqing. Come on, have a seat. The soup has gone cold for you." Lu Xiao said obsequiously.
"Heh, you don't need to worry about me, just eat yours first, I'll do it myself."
Are you always this obsequious? You seem quite adept at it.
"Haha... That's right, I've been a lackey since I was little, otherwise how could I be so popular at home?"
"Since it's so popular, why did you come to the countryside?" Su Tian looked at him with suspicion.
"Of course I'm popular. I have plenty of money and tickets. I wasn't sent to the countryside because my parents asked me to, but because my older brother from the same generation asked me to come down."
My brother only made me come down to work so I could get some exercise because he saw I was too idle.
However, I suspect that's not the reason. It seems there's some turmoil in our families, and my brother is afraid I'll be affected, afraid I'll fall into someone's trap, so he sent me to the countryside to avoid trouble.”
"Is your family very influential in Beijing? Why are you being so secretive?"
"That's right, that's why some people are jealous and want to mess with our family. After all, troublemakers are hard to deal with and impossible to guard against."
Su Tian listened to Lu Xiao's words and seemed to be deep in thought. She thought of her home; thankfully, it was far from the center of the incident. Beijing was just too dangerous.
"So how long do you plan to stay here?" Su Tian asked.
"I don't know, we'll see. But I think it's pretty good here, at least much better than all the backstabbing and infighting in the capital," Lu Xiao said with a smile.
The two chatted and ate in a pleasant atmosphere. After the meal, Lu Xiao offered to help wash the dishes, showing his diligence.
"Thank you for your hospitality today. Remember to call me next time you have something good to eat. I'm happy to help with anything," Lu Xiao said.
"Hmph, you've just finished this meal and you're already thinking about the next one. Aren't you partnered with the old educated youth?" Su Tian joked.
"Eat wherever there's food. If it's not good, we'll figure out how to make it ourselves."
"Then you should go back and rest first. I'm going to rest too." Su Tian said, then closed the door.
After eating and drinking his fill, Lu Xiao returned to his room humming a song and leaned against the headboard.
Zhang Shang glanced at him but didn't say anything, continuing to read the book in his hands.
"Hey, are you full?" Lu Xiao couldn't help but ask.
Zhang Shang glanced at him, but remained silent.
"I just ate some cured pork, the kind from Guangdong province. Have you ever tried it?"
"without."
"Guangdong cured meat tastes quite good, but people in Guangdong have a slightly bland palate, unlike us in the north, where we eat a lot of oil and salt."
"Yes, the weather in Guangdong and Guangxi provinces is hot and humid. They can't eat too much salty food and will feel very thirsty."
"I'll read a book to pass the time. I'm going to work tomorrow. Are you ready?"
"No need, someone will teach you. It's so simple to start work, there's no need to prepare."
"That's true, everything is easy for you."
After saying this, Lu Xiao also quieted down and started reading.
Su Tian looked at the meat buns in the room; there were ten left. She planned to secretly take a few to the cowshed after her lunch break, and then go to town to mail a letter.
While there was still some time, Su Tian quickly wrote the letter, including what she knew about the cowshed, and told them to take care of themselves and not to think about her too much.
After finishing writing, she threw it into her storage space and then checked on the condition of the black soil.
I found some rice seeds and planted them, and now it's almost time to harvest.
Great, another batch can be sold. Thinking about this, I fell asleep in bed.
