Chapter 65 Widow Zhang is with her cousin

After Su Tian took the children back to school, the morning classes ended.

She carried the pheasant back to the educated youth settlement, but the others there hadn't returned yet.

She immediately boiled water to prepare to pluck the chicken feathers. After cleaning the pheasant, she chopped it all up and used it to make chicken soup.

She also washed another pot and cooked rice. Su Tian wanted to eat white radish, so she went to the vegetable garden to pick a few radishes, cut them into pieces, and prepared to throw them into the chicken soup.

Half an hour later, the chicken soup was ready, and she was just about to take it out to cool.

Suddenly, there were several knocks on the door outside the courtyard.

She went over to take a look and saw that it was Widow Zhang.

"Hello, Su Zhiqing, this is a radish cake I made. You and the new educated youth Lu can eat it together."

Thank you for saving my child. Please don't mind this radish cake; it's all I can offer to thank you.

"You're welcome. Take these pastries back for your children. We don't lack food."

"No, I made this especially to thank you. If it weren't for you, my child might have..." Widow Zhang wiped away her tears and didn't finish her sentence.

"Sister-in-law, alright then, come in with me."

Su Tian led her to her room, picked up another bowl, and poured the radish cake into it.

She suddenly remembered the old man from that morning and wondered if Widow Zhang knew him.

"Do you know a man who's around thirty years old? He seems quiet, but he's quite good at hunting."

When Widow Zhang heard Su Tian ask this, she asked, "Was she wearing a black top?"

Su Tian nodded. Widow Zhang paused for a moment before continuing, "I know him. He's my husband's cousin."

"Then do you know what he feels for you..."

“I know, but I’m scared. I’m not afraid of what others say, I’m just afraid that I’ll bring him bad luck. Everyone in the village says that I’ll bring my husband to his death,” Widow Zhang said sadly.

"In that case, the two of you can take care of each other. I saw you arguing with someone the other day, and you were saying some really nasty things."

I know it's very difficult for a widow to raise a child alone. With him protecting you, no one will dare to bully you or spread rumors.

“I think you’re right. For the sake of the child, I’ll go back and think about it. If there’s nothing else, I’ll head back now.”

"Sister-in-law, wait a minute. He caught two pheasants this morning to thank us for saving your child," Su Tian said with a smile.

“I just made soup with two pheasants. Your bowl is a big one, so it can hold a lot. I’ll take some back for you to eat with your kids.”

After Su Tian finished speaking, she immediately went to get chicken soup for Widow Zhang.

"No, he called you, how could I possibly accept it?"

"What's wrong with eating so much? I was planning to pack it up for you if you hadn't come. If I hadn't reserved some for you, I would have just stewed a whole chicken."

"Thank you so much, you're so kind," Widow Zhang said gratefully.

"You're welcome. Try to think positively, take good care of yourself and the children. A good mood is good for your health." After saying this, Su Tian put the soup she had prepared into the basket that Widow Zhang was carrying.

"That's enough, sister-in-law, take it back quickly."

Widow Zhang looked at her bowl full of chicken and felt very grateful. Then, she took her basket and went home.

Her son smelled the aroma and ran over. She brought the chicken soup to the table, and the mother and son enjoyed a hearty meal.

After finishing her meal, Widow Zhang sat on the edge of the bed, pondering what Su Tian had just said, while memories of the past kept replaying in her mind.

She recalled the hardships she faced after her husband's death, and the days when she was pointed at and gossiped about by the villagers.

She knew that it wasn't easy for a widow to raise her child alone, and that things might really be better if someone could protect them.

Widow Zhang made up her mind; she decided to talk to her cousin.

She was filled with nervousness when she arrived at her husband's cousin's house with her child.

"What happened? Is the child alright?" Song Weicheng asked with concern.

Widow Zhang smiled slightly when she saw Song Weicheng's nervous expression.

"No, I wanted to talk to you about the two of us."

"You're willing to accept me?" Song Weicheng asked in surprise.

"Mmm, I'd like to try it with you."

They then talked for a long time, during which Widow Zhang poured out her worries and concerns.

Song Weicheng stated that he did not care about those rumors and was willing to protect the mother and child.

Widow Zhang accepted his kindness, and Song Weicheng happily paced back and forth, seemingly wanting to do something.

The two looked at each other and smiled. The child next to them saw his mother and uncle laughing and started to laugh along with them.

When Lu Xiao finished work, he would press water at the well to wash his hands and feet.

He saw that the dishes had already been set out for the older educated youth, and it was sweet potato porridge again; he was already tired of eating it.

Su Tian came out of the room and called out to Lu Xiao and Ma Chunling.

Lu Xiao immediately put down his chopsticks and stood up, intending to go to Su Tian's side.

Su Tian glanced at him and said, "Take the bowl and chopsticks with you."

"Okay, I'm coming right away." Lu Xiao walked over quickly.

When Ma Chunling saw that Lu Xiao had brought bowls and chopsticks, she turned around and went back to her room to get some as well, then hurriedly ran over.

"Su Tian, what's good to eat?" Ma Chunling asked happily.

"Eat chicken."

"Ah...that's great."

Su Tian brought out the chicken soup, took a bowl, poured soy sauce into it, and dipped the chicken in it. She also stir-fried a plate of bok choy.

"Wow...it smells so good."

"If it smells good, drink more," Su Tian said to Ma Chunling.

"Oh, and you too. This chicken was specially brought to thank you for saving the child. There are two pheasants in this soup, I'll stew them all."

Lu Xiao looked at it and saw that there were a lot of radishes added inside, making it look like a huge pot.
