Chapter 81 Carrying Manure and Collecting Fertilizer

Seeing He Hua's demeanor, Su Tian realized that this woman was seriously ill.

Before everyone could recover from the gossip about He Hua and Chen Gang, another female voice rang out from outside the door: "Zhang Zhiqing, is Zhang Zhiqing here?"

Zhang Tingting stepped forward and asked curiously, "Did you come to see me?"

"Oh, sorry, I'm looking for a male educated youth named Zhang." She almost forgot that this female educated youth also had the surname Zhang.

"Oh, then I'll go and call him out for you." After saying that, Zhang Tingting went to Zhang Shang's door and called him.

“Zhang Zhiqing, there’s a woman calling you from outside. Go and see what’s going on.”

"Take care, brother," Lu Xiao said gloatingly.

Zhang Shang felt very annoyed. Why were all these women coming to him?

He walked out the door indifferently and stood there silently.

Du Xiaoxiao felt a little apprehensive. Why did he look so cold? But she still said, "Zhang Zhiqing, this is radish cake that my family made. I'll give it to you to try."

"Take it back, I don't need it. I have something to do, I'll go now." After saying that, Zhang Shang returned to his room.

Du Xiaoxiao was furious. Why was this educated youth so difficult to deal with? His heart was as hard as a stone. She refused to believe she couldn't win him over.

Zhou Man, who had just stepped out of the room, saw all of this. She walked to the door and glanced at Du Xiaoxiao.

She muttered to herself: "With looks like that, she dares to dream of getting close to Brother Zhang Shang?"

Zhou Man looked at Du Xiaoxiao, who had no advantage whatsoever, and without saying a word, turned around and went back to her room.

Du Xiaoxiao was furious at Zhou Man's disdainful look, and she stormed off with her basket.

These city people look down on others, what's so noble about them? They're just sent to this poor, remote place.

Hmph, you just wait, she'll definitely take down that Zhang Zhiqing, and see if you still dare to look down on her.

"You're back? Are you going to refuse to take her back again? Girl, forget it. It's no use doing these things. They won't like a country girl."

Look at yourself, what is there about you that makes anyone like you? Your family background isn't good, and you're not even as pretty as the female educated youth who were sent to the countryside during the Cultural Revolution.

"No, I refuse to give up. I know I can do it," Du Xiaoxiao said resolutely.

"Fine, go ahead and do whatever you want. I'm not going to play along. You'll come back to your senses when you hit a wall."

After the women's director finished speaking, she went to her own private plot of land to find her husband and told him what had happened.

"Let's go, let's take her to her aunt's now, she has to go to school tomorrow anyway."

After the two finished discussing, Old Man Du went to the team to borrow an oxcart, and the women's director quickly helped Du Xiaoxiao pack her things.

"Come on, hurry up and get on, or I won't have time to take you later," Old Man Du said seriously.

Seeing her father like this, Du Xiaoxiao had no choice but to reluctantly get onto the oxcart and be taken to her aunt's house.

When Du Xiaoxiao arrived at her aunt's house, she tearfully complained to her aunt. After listening, her aunt comforted her, saying, "Silly child, forced relationships are never sweet. There's no need for us to hang ourselves on one tree."

Besides, these educated youth from the city have much better conditions and higher standards, so we shouldn't ask for too much.

But Du Xiaoxiao was not willing to give up. She secretly vowed to make Zhang Shang fall in love with her.

In the blink of an eye, the joyful days came to an end.

The next morning, everyone at the educated youth settlement had to get up to go to work, and Su Tian and Ma Chunling also had to go to school.

As the two of them were walking down the road, they saw Zou Daying walking towards them.

Zou Daying was wearing a floral dress and had makeup on, making her look a little better than usual.

She saw Su Tian and her eyes revealed a hint of disdain. She deliberately walked over to Chen Gang and started chatting with him.

Chen Gang looked around somewhat awkwardly, then politely responded to Zou Daying's words.

Seeing this, Su Tian and Ma Chunling felt it was pointless and didn't want to watch anymore; they still had to go to school.

Zou Daying was secretly pleased with herself, thinking that her outfit today must have attracted Chen Gang's attention.

However, she didn't notice that Chen Gang's gaze was constantly shifting, and she thought that she had already amazed him.

"Judging from her appearance, it seems she hasn't given up yet. Do you think she might cause trouble and prevent Chen Zhiqing and his wife from getting married?" Ma Chunling gossiped.

"She doesn't have that kind of power. If she gets a letter of introduction and a marriage certificate, then she's married," Su Tian explained.

"That's true, let's hurry up, class is about to start." Ma Chunling pulled Su Tian and ran away quickly.

The morning sun shone on the young faces of the educated youth. However, after hearing the brigade leader's instructions that today's farm work was to collect and compost manure, they realized that...

The older educated youth all had bitter faces; everyone in the village had to work, and they couldn't escape it either.

Lu Xiao was puzzled and pulled Xu Wen next to him to ask, "Why do you all look so miserable?"

Xu Wen looked at him like he was a complete idiot and explained, "Collecting and composting manure is very smelly."

"Fertilizer is supposed to smell bad, you don't have to make it so bitter, do you?" Lu Xiao was even more puzzled.

Xu Wen looked at the landlord's foolish son again and explained, "This is not chemical fertilizer. The manure the brigade leader was talking about is pig manure, cow manure, and human excrement."

"How... how do I accumulate this? Just hearing about it makes me want to throw up. Is it too late for me to ask for leave now?" Lu Xiao said with a bitter face.

Xu Wen shook his head. "Sigh, we have to do this every year."

After the brigade leader finished speaking, everyone in the village took their buckets, ladles, hoes, and shovels back to their own outhouses to shovel their excrement, which they then dumped into the manure pit.

Zhou Dajun also led the people from the educated youth settlement, and they went to the settlement's outhouse to shovel excrement, carrying tools with them. They worked in pairs, one shoveling and the other carrying the excrement.
