I spent a sleepless night. It was a summer morning, and the sun had already risen at six o'clock.
Su Tian got up early and prepared to go to town because she needed to go to the post office to send a telegram to her family to let them know she was safe.
She rushed to the village entrance, where the village's oxcart was already waiting.
“It costs one cent to go to town and back,” Old Man Song told Su Tian.
"Okay, sir, here's a dime for you."
Several people were already sitting in the car, all of them middle-aged women from the village.
Su Tiantian greeted everyone with a sweet smile: "Hello, ladies! I'm Su, the new educated youth."
Aunt Zhang said, "Your daughter speaks so sweetly. What are you going to town to buy?"
"I'm going to town to send a telegram home to let them know I'm safe."
After two more old women boarded the oxcart, it was full, and Old Man Song drove it off.
One of the women took a handful of pumpkin seeds out of her pocket and handed them to Su Tian: "Su, you're from somewhere, aren't you?"
"Auntie, I'm from Guangdong Province."
“Oh, Guangdong Province! Guangdong Province is great, it’s a big provincial capital,” said another knowledgeable aunt.
Is it really that good?
"Okay, Guangdong's economy is more developed than our Guangxi province, and I'll tell you in secret, Guangdong also has a port city nearby."
"Wow, that's amazing! My goodness."
“Su Zhiqing, don’t you speak Cantonese? You can call me Aunt Wang.”
"I can speak Cantonese, hehe..."
"Say something to me?"
"You're so smug."
"Haha... This Cantonese sounds a bit like our Qinzhou dialect."
"Indeed..."
Amidst Su Tian and her friends' laughter, the oxcart swayed and rocked, finally arriving in town an hour later.
Although the bumpy road made my butt hurt, it was better than walking.
"Wait under that big tree at 11 a.m., or you'll be late," said Mr. Song.
"Aunties, I'm going to the post office now. Let's chat again in the village when we have time."
"Okay, remember to come visit us when you have time. We'll be waiting for you under the big tree."
"Okay, I'll be going now."
"This Su educated youth is really fun, he's so down-to-earth," Aunt Wang said, cracking sunflower seeds.
Su Tian didn't have time to chat with them; she was busy looking for the post office.
Upon entering the post office, in an effort to save money, I only sent four words: "Arrived, don't worry." These four words cost a total of four cents.
After sending the telegram, she naturally went to the state-run restaurant for breakfast.
The state-run restaurants in the morning offered a very rich variety of breakfast options, including congee with dried radish, vegetarian rice noodles, meat rice noodles, zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), glutinous rice cakes, steamed buns, meat buns, vegetarian buns...
Su Tian's mouth watered as she looked at the food on the blackboard. These kinds of foods were not available in the apocalypse. People often didn't know where their next meal would come from, or they would eat instant noodles for a whole week, and sometimes they didn't even have instant noodles.
Su Tian gave one or two grain coupons plus two mao (0.2 yuan) and ordered a bowl of rice noodles with meat, ten meat buns and twenty steamed buns, spending a little over one yuan.
Su Tian found a corner seat and quickly began to eat.
She glanced at the clock on the wall and realized it was only 8:30. She decided to go to the supply and marketing cooperative to see what she could take out of her spatial dimension.
When we arrived at the supply and marketing cooperative, the items in the space were almost the same as those in the supply and marketing cooperative, so we were finally safe.
I found a secluded corner and took out a small iron pot, a ceramic pot, and a thermos from my storage space, placing them on my backpack.
Even the basket was taken from his spatial storage; it was looted from Chen Gang's house.
Walking along the road, I happened to run into Chen Gang and He Hua, who were panting as they walked into the town.
They saw Su Tian like hungry wolves saw a white rabbit.
Su Tian just kept walking forward, ignoring them completely; it wasn't like she was just being nosy.
But they didn't want to let Su Tian off so easily. "Su Tian, I'm calling you, why aren't you answering me?"
"I've already told you that Chen Gang and I are nothing anymore, are you still angry? Aren't we good friends?" He Huacha cried out.
Su Tian couldn't stand it anymore. She already had a short temper. And this green tea bitch was even trying to seduce her. How could she tolerate this?
"What is your relationship with Chen Gang? Does it concern me?"
"I broke up with you all a long time ago, why are you still showing up in front of me? Are you trying to be a fool? If you keep blabbering in front of me, don't blame me for taking action."
Chen Gang immediately stepped forward to protect He Hua: "Su Tian, you've always been very gentle and sensible. How did you turn into a shrew? I feel like I don't even recognize you anymore. Stop making a scene. He Hua and I are just good friends."
"Get lost..." Su Tian slapped Chen Gang, and his face immediately swelled up.
She carried her basket to the oxcart, where an older woman she got along with was already sitting. Su Tian greeted them all and got on the oxcart to wait for departure.
"Su, here, have another handful of sunflower seeds." Aunt Wang kindly gave her another handful of sunflower seeds.
"Thank you, Aunt Wang. I also bought some fruit candies. One for each of you, so you can have some sweet treats."
"Oh, Su Zhiqing, you're too kind."
"You eat it yourself, we don't want it."
"Take them all, aunties, these candies aren't very expensive, take them and eat them."
"Okay, thank you very much. You're too kind, my daughter."
After everyone had arrived, Old Man Song drove the oxcart towards the village.
It was only noon when we got back to the village.
Su Tian put her things back in her room and saw Chen Chanjuan, an old educated youth who had come to find her: "Su Tian, the brigade leader came by earlier but you weren't here. He asked me to tell you that we have to start harvesting rice tomorrow, and we may not have time to rest for the next month."
