Chapter 9 Going to Town

"Thank you, Chen Zhiqing, I understand," Su Tian nodded.

It is now mid-July, the season when rice ripens.

The rice in Qinzhou Town is harvested twice a year, once in summer and once in autumn.

Rice seedlings are planted in spring and harvested in summer. After the harvest, the seedlings are cultivated and planted again. Another harvest can be carried out in November of the autumn.

Summer harvesting is extremely hard work, with both heat and sun exposure. You also have to avoid getting your face and hands cut by the undried straw, which is both itchy and painful.

There are also many flying insects and leeches in the rice paddies, and sometimes snakes.

Almost every child who grew up in the rural south has done this kind of farm work; it's extremely tiring.

The biggest fear during the harvest season is encountering typhoons. When a typhoon hits, the rice grains are blown soft and limp in the fields, lying askew and adding to the burden on farmers.

If a major typhoon hits, there will be almost no harvest, and the farmers will have worked for nothing all year. It is a common occurrence for people to have no food to eat and no grain to hand over to the government.

Therefore, the village attaches great importance to the rice harvest, and no one is allowed to take leave except in special circumstances.

Su Tian didn't feel anything about doing farm work; she just did it when she was supposed to.

To have good food and drink, she felt motivated to work. Su Tian closed the door, took out three meat buns from her spatial storage, and ate them with pure milk.

After eating, I sat on the bed for a while, read a Chinese textbook, and then lay down for a nap.

When Su Tian woke up, she checked her watch and found it was only two o'clock. She realized she didn't have a suitcase to pack her clothes, so she decided to go to the village to see if anyone could sell them.

As I walked into the village, I saw an old woman: "Grandma, do you know where I can buy a box for storing clothes?"

"I know, I know... You've come to the right place, only my house has it, come in quickly, come in quickly."

"Okay, thank you, ma'am."

"Choose whatever you like. Large ones are three yuan, medium ones are two yuan, and small ones are one yuan."

"I want two large ones, six yuan for you. Can you deliver them for me?"

"Help me, help me! I'll have my son push the cart to the educated youth settlement for you. Da Niu, come out here and help the educated youth deliver two boxes to the educated youth settlement."

This Su educated youth is really rich; he made a little money again today, hehehe...

"Okay, Mom."

When the suitcase was taken to the educated youth settlement, Song Daniu helped carry it into the room. After thanking him, Su Tian handed him two fruit candies.

Da Niu said shyly, "Thank you."

Finding it was still early, Su Tian decided to go up the mountain to gather firewood. After tidying up the things in the house, she carried a basket on her back, took a rope and a wood-chopping knife, and went up the mountain.

"Hey, there are mushrooms on this mountain now?" Su Tian walked into the mountain, looking around like a dog that had been let loose.

This whole area is full of red pine mushrooms, why isn't anyone picking them?

Su Tian burst into laughter; she was really lucky. She quickly squatted down, cleaned all the mushrooms, and put them into her spatial storage. She decided to cook bone and mushroom soup that night.

Thinking about this, Su Tian's mouth started watering again.

"Wow, chestnuts, mangosteens, wood ear mushrooms... I'm rich! I'm rich!" Su Tian happily put everything into her spatial storage.

Suddenly, Su Tian noticed a change in the space. A small patch of black soil appeared in the space. Was it trying to remind her that she could plant things now?

She doesn't have time to deal with the black soil right now; she'll make plans when she gets the seeds.

Looking at her watch, Su Tian realized it was almost five o'clock. She quickly found a dead tree and started chopping it down. She also gathered some branches and filled her basket with dry leaves to take back and use as kindling. Then she quickly went down the mountain.

"Hey, Su, you've gone to chop firewood." Xu Wen, a male educated youth, was about to turn back when he saw Su Tian carrying a dead tree, a bundle of branches, and a basket of dry leaves. He was shocked.

"Yes, I'm going to cook dinner tonight. The earthen stove is almost dry. We'll start harvesting rice tomorrow, and I'm afraid I won't have time to gather firewood again," Su Tian explained.

"That means we need to cut more; we can't finish harvesting rice in a short time."

"Start work at five o'clock tomorrow morning, don't be late," Xu Wen reminded him.

"Okay, I understand. Thank you. I'll head back now."
