Chen Gang pulled He Hua along and ran non-stop, desperately trying to escape, their bodies drenched in sweat.
They were running so fast that they tripped over a large rock and nearly fell.
But fear compelled them to regain their balance immediately, then gripped each other's hands tightly and continued running, with only one thought in their minds: to get rid of them.
The three thugs behind them were also chasing desperately. Just when they were about to be caught, Chen Gang suddenly noticed an alley ahead. Without hesitation, he led He Hua into it.
The two ran wildly through the narrow alley, thinking they had finally shaken off the three thugs, but little did they know, they had entered another dead end.
"What should we do? We've got nowhere to go!" He Hua said anxiously.
Chen Gang looked around and saw a dilapidated ladder on the wall. An idea struck him. "Quick, climb up!"
Before the two could even climb the ladder, the three thugs caught up with them.
"I told you to run, run! Why aren't you running?"
"What, what do you want to do? Don't come any closer," Chen Gang said, trembling.
The short, skinny thug, seeing Chen Gang's pathetic state, viciously kicked him several times. Chen Gang, seeing that the thug was shorter than him, was immediately enraged. He rushed over and started fighting with the thug.
Seeing this, the other two thugs became even angrier. The three of them surrounded Chen Gang and started punching and kicking him. Chen Gang was unable to fight back and could only protect his head with his hands.
After being beaten for more than ten minutes, Chen Gang was curled up in pain, but he could still endure it.
Compared to Su Tian beating him, these three went much easier, after all, they were only after money and didn't want to take anyone's life.
After venting their anger, the three thugs ignored Chen Gang, who was curled up in a humiliating manner, and turned to look at He Hua with fierce and lewd eyes.
He Hua watched this scene in fear, afraid they would hurt her, and quickly said, "I have money, I'll give it to you..."
With trembling hands, she pulled two ten-yuan bills from her two front pockets and placed them in the hand of one of the thugs.
"You think you can mess with us with just this little bit?" the thugs yelled at He Hua.
Hearing the shouts, He Hua, while crying and sobbing, pulled out three more ten-yuan bills from her two back pockets and stuffed them into their hands.
"That's all, there's nothing left. I'm not lying to you."
Her eyes were glistening with tears, and her voice trembled slightly as she spoke.
The thugs all scrutinized He Hua with suspicious eyes, trying to confirm whether what she said was true.
One of the squinty-eyed thugs said, "Take off your socks, quick."
He Hua's heart skipped a beat when she heard this. How did this person know that she had money hidden under her feet?
"Brother, I... I don't think it's appropriate. It would be inappropriate for a woman like me to take off my shoes in public," He Hua tried to persuade them.
"Hurry up, are you trying to stall for time?" The squinty-eyed thug clenched his fist and said fiercely.
"I'll take it off, I'll take it off right now."
He Hua was terrified, her face covered in tears. She took off her shoes and then her socks.
The thugs stared at He Hua's smelly socks, where a large coin that He Hua had hidden inside was visible.
"You're really good at hiding things, woman. You'd better hand over the money for the socks, or you'll be in trouble," the skinny, short thug said menacingly.
He Hua nervously pulled out the money for two socks and handed it to them. Barefoot and with tears streaming down her face, she pleaded, "Brothers, I really have no money left. Please let me go."
“Fine, we brothers will let you go,” said the squinty-eyed thug.
When He Hua saw that the three of them were no longer staring at her, her tense nerves finally relaxed.
The three thugs turned around and surrounded Chen Gang, who was lying on the ground. One of them even kicked him and said, "Hey, it's your turn. Take out all the money you have on you."
"I have no money. All my money is with my wife. Where would I get the money?" Chen Gang hurriedly explained.
With a squinty-eyed look, he gave one of the thugs a signal, and the thug immediately squatted down and searched Chen Gang, finding only two yuan.
"Poor wretch, what a pathetic sight, daring to come out and about when you're so poor."
The three thugs were still furious, so they teamed up and beat Chen Gang up again.
After beating him up, he swaggered away.
Chen Gang was writhing in pain, while He Hua's fear finally subsided, like a bird that had survived a catastrophe.
She patted her chest lightly, panting heavily, the fear in her eyes gradually replaced by relief.
"Thank goodness, they're finally gone," she thought to herself, her legs still feeling a little weak.
"Why aren't you coming over to help me up? What are you sitting on the ground looking at?" Chen Gang said in a hoarse voice.
"Brother Chen Gang, are you alright? Does it hurt?"
He Hua stood up, wiping away her tears, and rushed to his side. She touched him with her hand to see if he was injured anywhere.
"Help me up quickly, let's get out of here and go to the police station to report this."
"Okay, I'll help you."
Both of them were in a sorry state, and they staggered along for twenty minutes before finally emerging from the secluded alley.
They walked hand in hand down the main road, occasionally drawing scrutinizing glances from passersby.
They went to the police station and explained the situation to the officers. After taking their statements, the officers decided to let them go home first and notify them when there were results.
After Chen Gang and He Hua left the police station, He Hua finally couldn't hold back anymore and hid in a corner to burst into tears.
"The money I just withdrew was stolen like this. These scumbags deserve to die. I hid it so well, yet they still found out."
