Chapter 3 No Regrets
Zhang Pengfei's pupils constricted sharply, and he roared, "Keep dreaming! Don't think you can do whatever you want just because you have a few bucks. I'll pay you back every penny, with interest!"
After saying that, he slammed the door and left.
The weather in May was already quite hot, but Zhang Pengfei, walking under the scorching sun, felt as if he had fallen into an ice cave, shivering with cold.
Although he slammed the door shut with great force just now, where is he going to get 500,000 yuan to pay back Chen Jingyang?
Under the blazing sun, amidst blooming flowers and lush greenery, and bustling traffic, Zhang Pengfei stood on the street, looking around blankly, as if standing in the endless yellow sands of an eternal night.
The phone rang abruptly. Zhang Pengfei glanced at it and saw it was from the Peking University Security Department.
He pressed the answer button hesitantly. The security guard told him to come to the west gate of the school immediately, as someone was looking for him. Zhang Pengfei asked who it was, but the person refused to say, only saying that he would know when he arrived.
Who could it be? Zhang Pengfei was completely baffled. His family, relatives, teachers, classmates, and the hospital all had his phone number. Who would go directly to the school to find him?
Upon arriving at the west gate of the school, Zhang Pengfei went straight to the guardhouse, but froze upon seeing who it was—it was Aunt Liu, the mother-in-law of the young couple who had been hit!
As soon as Aunt Liu saw Zhang Pengfei, she rushed over, wailing and crying, "Little Zhang, you have to have a conscience! You can't just abandon us now that you have money! He's our only son..."
"Aunt Liu, Aunt Liu..." Zhang Pengfei's mind was buzzing, partly because Aunt Liu's wailing was so loud that it was startling, and partly because he couldn't understand how Aunt Liu knew he was rich.
"I have no money. You've seen what my family's situation is like..."
"You're talking nonsense!" Aunt Liu's face was streaked with tears, but her expression was fierce: "Wang Mazi from your village is my uncle's cousin. He saw it when he went to your uncle's house to borrow things. Someone donated 1 million yuan to you on some crowdfunding platform! You still want to deny it?!"
That's the downside of small towns; if you turn a few corners, you'll find that almost everyone there is a relative.
Zhang Pengfei could only bite the bullet and explain, "Those donations are for my mother's medical treatment. There is platform supervision, so I can't use them however I want. Besides, they have already been prepaid to the hospital."
Seeing that she didn't want to give it to him, Aunt Liu shrieked, "I don't believe it! The money is in your hands. His cousin said that all that money was directly deposited into your bank account!"
When a scholar encounters a soldier, reason is useless.
Zhang Pengfei sighed helplessly: "There's nothing I can do if you don't believe me, that's just how it is."
When force didn't work, Aunt Liu changed her approach and knelt down before Zhang Pengfei with a thud: "Young Zhang, I really have no other choice but to travel all this way to beg you. Your mother's life is precious, but what about my son and daughter-in-law's lives? They're only in their twenties. What did they do wrong that they have to be killed by your father...!"
Zhang Pengfei felt as if a knife had been plunged into his heart and stirred inside.
Aunt Liu's family wasn't well-off either. Her husband had passed away early, and she raised her son alone. After he got married and had a grandson, she thought good days were coming, but a car accident plunged the family straight into hell.
As a third-year law student, Zhang Pengfei knew that given his family's situation, even if Aunt Liu sued, he, as the heir, would not be liable for compensation.
But the law is just a cold piece of paper, while people's hearts are made of hot flesh and blood!
Overwhelmed with grief, Aunt Liu broke down in tears. She suddenly rushed out of the guardhouse, ran onto the street, and knelt down!
An Aston Martin slammed on its brakes, and the tires screeched as they rubbed against the pavement.
Chen Jingyang frowned as he looked at the woman just inches away through his sunglasses, then opened the door and got out of the car.
Without a second thought, he pulled out his phone and called the police—trying to scam him? Don't they know which way the sun rises!
Grandma Liu seemed to have lost her mind, frantically kowtowing to pedestrians on the main road, repeatedly saying only one sentence: "Help! Save my son's life!"
Sometimes, it only takes a moment to drive someone crazy.
Zhang Pengfei and the security guard dragged Liu Da Niang to the side of the road. Liu Da Niang tightly grabbed Zhang Pengfei's hand, and her nails, worn down by the years, scraped against the back of Zhang Pengfei's hand, peeling off a layer of skin.
Her voice was hoarse from crying, and she had cried all her tears. Her mouth opened and closed like a fish waiting to die on the shore, with only her eyes shining with hope: "Please save my son, I beg you."
Chen Jingyang didn't make any more calls. He stood by and watched the whole thing indifferently without saying a word.
"Okay!" Zhang Pengfei bit his lip until it bled, patted Aunt Liu's hand, and gestured for her to let go: "Please give me some time."
Grandma Liu was stunned and couldn't believe it: "You promised to give me the money? You promised to give me the money?! Can I go and save my son?!"
"Yes!" Zhang Pengfei swallowed the blood, his voice filled with a resolute determination, "Please wait for me."
He got up and walked towards Chen Jingyang.
In the face of life, his dignity is worthless!
When he tries to gain sympathy by portraying himself as pitiful on online charity platforms, he has already lost all dignity.
Zhang Pengfei raised his face. He was more than ten centimeters shorter than Chen Jingyang, and when they stood so close together, Chen Jingyang seemed exceptionally tall.
"Please... help me again."
Chen Jingyang wore sunglasses, so his expression was unreadable. He neither refused nor agreed, but just looked at Zhang Pengfei quietly for a long time without saying a word.
Zhang Pengfei knew what Chen Jingyang was waiting for. He lowered his head, took a small step back, and prepared to bend his knees.
Before he knelt down, Chen Jingyang reached out and grabbed his chin, pried open his light red lips with his thumb, and said two words indifferently: "Okay."
Zhang Pengfei was almost moved to tears, but Chen Jingyang released his lips, lifted his chin with his hand, and smiled, "But you know my conditions."
Zhang Pengfei's heart trembled for no reason, and his long, curved eyelashes fluttered. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes in despair: "I know."
"Have you thought it through?"
"I've thought it through."
"No regrets?"
"I will never go back on my word!"
Chen Jingyang suddenly exerted force, squeezing Zhang Pengfei's chin until it was deformed: "Open your eyes and look at me!"
Zhang Pengfei obediently opened his eyes and met Chen Jingyang's gaze. His eyes were clear and bright, but filled with the sorrow of heartbreak.
Say what you just said again!
"I've made up my mind, and I won't go back on my word!"
