It was before sunrise, the darkest hour before dawn, when all was silent, the silence carrying an eerie quality, and perhaps even an unsettling quiet.
Suddenly, the Cloud Piercer flew up to Wu Fan and, without saying a word, pressed Wu Fan down. He then lay down himself, giving Wu Fan a stern look, telling him not to make any noise. He then turned and stared intently down below.
Since the place where they had landed was a hillside of moderate size, the Cloud Piercer and Wu Fan were lying on the top of the hill, using the surrounding vegetation to perfectly conceal themselves. It would be difficult to notice that there were two people lurking there unless one was looking from mid-air.
Before long, two people emerged from the bushes at the foot of the hillside. The Cloud Piercer looked closely and his expression changed. He exclaimed in a low voice, "The Tail Clan!"
Wu Fan detected a rare hint of shock in the voice and followed the Cloud Piercer's gaze downwards.
The two people who emerged were not human at all, their bodies covered in thick hair.
A creature with cat-like ears, a face covered in strange colored markings, and a long, thin tail dangling casually on its back, its nose constantly sniffing something.
The other person was small and thin, like a newborn bear cub. He was clumsy and slow-moving, with a thick tail that was particularly eye-catching, making him look like a tiny person dragging a big broom.
Closely following behind the cat-eared man, it would walk upright for a few steps before bending down and running on all fours like an animal.
After catching up with the cat-eared man, he stood up straight, following closely behind while cautiously keeping an eye on his surroundings.
"This smell is definitely right, it's from this direction. Although there are some other smells, the smell of decay and death is definitely there."
As the cat-eared man spoke, he pointed his finger, and the direction his sharp fingernails pointed was precisely at the top of the slope where the Cloud Piercer and Wu Fan were hiding.
"Should we continue tracking or go back to report? Getting too close could be life-threatening, and further ahead isn't familiar territory; we don't know what might happen. Going back to report now shouldn't be too much of a problem for our superiors," the bear-man, who had just learned to walk upright, said cautiously in a low voice.
"That makes sense. No one dares to provoke something ominous. Everyone wants to get as far away as possible. Otherwise, they wouldn't go to such lengths to plan this. We just need to confirm that the ominous thing is moving further and further away in the predetermined direction! And the further it goes in this direction, the stronger the smell becomes!"
The cat-eared man rubbed his nose repeatedly as he spoke.
The two walked up the hill while talking, seemingly to make a final confirmation before returning. Clearly, what the bear-man said was exactly what they were thinking.
Wu Fan lay motionless, watching the two inhuman-looking monsters approach, almost unable to believe his eyes.
The language coming from the other side of the ear was strange and toned, clearly indicating that the two people in front of him were speaking a different language.
The Cloud Piercer, lying beside Wu Fan, appeared unusually calm, his eyes fixed on the two Tail Clan members who were getting closer and closer.
Seeing that the two Tail Tribe members were about to reach the top of the hill, they relaxed a little. After all, once they reached the top and confirmed that the direction of the scent was on the pre-designed route, they could leave with peace of mind.
Just a second before the two Tail Clan members were about to discover him, the Cloud Piercer suddenly struck the ground with both palms, his wings of light unfurled, and he flew out instantly like an arrow released from a bow. His right hand shimmered with light as he viciously grabbed at the cat-eared man's neck.
The two Tail Clan members were startled by the Cloud Piercer who shot out, but they reacted quickly, instinctively pushing off the ground with all four feet and retreating rapidly.
However, it was ultimately a case of the prepared mind catching the unprepared. The Cloud Piercer's combat experience was sharp and seasoned, his timing was precise, and his attacks were ruthless, with everything under his control.
With a single blow, he tore open the cat-eared man's throat, striking a vital point. He then followed up with a spinning kick in mid-air, sending the bear-man flying far away. Upon landing, he didn't hesitate for a moment, turned around, and flew towards the top of the hill. He grabbed Wu Fan with his left hand, and with a flap of his light wings, he disappeared from sight.
The battle happened in an instant. Wu Fan was still in a daze when he saw the Cloud Piercer return, carrying him like a bundle.
Wu Fan looked back and saw the cat-eared man's throat ripped open, blood gushing out like a geyser, his hands clutching his throat in disbelief.
The bear-man, who had just looked a bit dazed, suddenly shone with a bright red light and swelled up in an instant, transforming into a brown bear the size of a car. Its fur stood on end, and its thick, sharp limbs pounded the ground as it charged toward Wu Fan, arriving in the blink of an eye.
Before Wu Fan could even exclaim in surprise, he saw that the Cloud Piercer had placed two light daggers at the top of the slope. The moment the transformed bear-man reached the top, the two light daggers exploded with a deafening roar, shaking the surrounding trees and causing leaves to rustle and fall. The transformed bear-man was surrounded by the dust and dirt kicked up by the explosion. When his vision cleared, the Cloud Piercer had already vanished without a trace.
The bear-man, transformed, roared angrily, howling to the sky. He turned and rushed towards the dying cat-eared man, tears glistening in his eyes, his bloodshot eyes blazing with fury as he roared at the cat-eared man:
"Damn it, those scumbag tribesmen got away! Get on my back right now!"
"I am nearing my end and need no rescue. Send this message back as soon as possible, and do not forget to bring my sinful body back. If I am fortunate enough to be buried in the clan, I will follow the glory of the last lord and be extremely grateful! As for that lowly reptile, he will not escape!"
The cat-eared man covered his throat with both hands and spoke in a hoarse and difficult voice.
Then, a blood-stained hand stretched out and traced patterns in the air. The blood, following the movement of the finger, hovered in mid-air, slowly gathering into a strange pattern. A bright red light shone forth, then it vanished into the void. Seeing the cat-eared man's actions, the bear-man was shocked and exclaimed in alarm:
"Why use this forbidden technique? If you hurry back to your clan now, you still have a chance to survive!"
