Chapter 12 Trap

"Aunt...Aunt, the ghost?" The words seemed to come out unconsciously, her voice trembling. Yuan Xin gripped the hilt of her sword tightly, her knuckles turning slightly white and trembling slightly, showing how tightly she was holding it.

"Not bad, you still recognize this thing. Have you seen it before?" Geng Qi's tone was as usual, which could make people inexplicably relax.

"Among the many demons, the Guhuo Ghost appears most frequently in the human world and is the most difficult to deal with. On the second day after we entered the sect, the Third Elder taught us to recognize it."

This is common knowledge that disciples of the immortal sect must remember when entering the sect.

The speaker's voice was not loud, but very steady.

This was the first time Geng Qi had given this brave disciple who had followed him down the secret passage a proper look. The other three had followed behind him, and the passage was dimly lit, so he hadn't noticed this person. Yuan Xin had come down to look for someone, Gao Yao had followed because his spiritual power was higher than the others and he was fast enough to escape, and as for the third person, he had been quiet and had little presence.

Now it seems that he is the most composed of the three.

Geng Qi immediately became interested and asked, "What's this brother's name?"

"Junior Ye Hanqi..."

Before he could finish speaking, he was interrupted by a loud bang.

The Guhuo demon that emerged from the stone gate seemed to be enraged. It suddenly rushed out of the stone gate, scattering huge rocks all over the ground. When it stood up, it was no shorter than half an inch from the stone gate. It spread its dark golden wings, shook off the sand-like debris on its back, turned its feet, and stood facing them.

The moment the Guhuo Ghost emerged from the stone gate, the scattered souls wandering throughout the secret chamber, like startled birds on tree branches, rushed towards the secret passage. Their panicked and anxious appearance showed that they were even more wary of the Guhuo Ghost than of the two flames that Geng Qi had set off.

But after they gathered there, they wandered around like headless flies.

The exit was right in front of them.

Geng Qi lowered his eyes slightly.

"They can't get out." The voice that came from behind him echoed his thoughts.

Geng Qi then looked at the stone platform they had just stepped down from. At a glance, he could not find anything unusual about the secret room, but its very existence was unusual.

The secret passage buried deep underground, the scattered souls without physical bodies, and the Guhuo ghost that devours souls. The souls cannot get out and drift scattered in the secret room. This situation easily reminds people of one thing: food.

Just as they were thinking this, the Guhuo ghost outside the stone gate suddenly moved. Its two sharp claws braced on the ground, and it suddenly spread its wings towards the cave entrance, its bird's wings spread wide, and let out a cry.

The three people in front of him covered their ears at the same time. A flash of silver light appeared, and a spiritual energy barrier was set up in front of them. Geng Qi turned his head and saw Rong Yu lower his hand. He glanced at Rong Yu's hand unintentionally, and then quickly looked away.

To be honest, the cry of the Guhuo Ghost is truly unpleasant. Its hoarse and dull sound is even more irritating than a crow's. It is not particularly piercing, but it has a kind of vibration that can shake the spiritual energy in a person's body. A person without cultivation can be directly crippled by its cry.

Suddenly, its body arched backward, and its wide-open beak formed an invisible vortex, sucking in the scattered souls lingering at the entrance of the secret passage.

However, its blood-red eyes showed no sign of restraint, like a starving beast. Those few scattered souls were not even enough to fill its teeth, and it quickly set its sights on the other prey in the secret chamber.

Startled by those eyes, Gao Yao flinched, but his feet didn't leave the ground. Geng Qi couldn't help but find it amusing: "The girl isn't scared yet, and you, a grown man, are acting like a coward?"

Gao Yao glanced back at him and scratched his head sheepishly.

The Guhuo ghost was already poised to attack, slightly lowering its body. Geng Qi stepped forward and pulled the person blocking his way behind him. When he tried to pull Yuan Xin, he couldn't budge her. He leaned closer and saw that the girl wasn't fearless, but rather terrified.

He patted her shoulder lightly, and she let out a scream of surprise, even louder than the howl of the Guhuo ghost. Geng Qi took a step back, but before he could even complain, the man yelled at him, "What are you doing!"

It's a person's instinctive reaction after being overly frightened; it's good if they don't faint.

Geng Qi said, "Let me tell you to move your feet."

Before she could react, the Guhuo Ghost pounced at incredible speed. With a dull thud, the scabbard met the Guhuo Ghost's claws, and a flash of silver light forced it back a few steps.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, Geng Qi pulled Yuan Xin back a considerable distance, and only released her when he was sure it was a safe distance.

Perhaps belatedly realizing that with their grandmaster uncle in charge, there was no need to worry about danger, Yuan Xin looked at the people who had hidden in the corner with them and couldn't help but tease them: "Didn't you say that this couldn't possibly have been done by Gu Huo Gui?"

Geng Qi suddenly had a handful of melon seeds in his hand. He cracked one open, then tossed the shell aside and pointed at the stone platform, saying, "Could the Guhuo Ghost build itself such a large secret chamber? Does it know how to use formations to confine its food? You're overestimating its intelligence!"

As they were talking, the Guhuo Ghost, who had been suppressed, suddenly sprang up and let out a roar.

Geng Qi: "...He does have some intelligence."

At least it can understand human language.

Yuan Xin: "..."

She rolled her eyes at him, and Geng Qi said sullenly, "That couldn't be it. There isn't a single corpse here. Could it eat a person whole, skin and bones?"

He paused for a moment, noticing the bloodstains on the stone platform but no corpse. His gaze shifted to the closed stone doors, then to the fighting between the man and the bird.

Compared to the Guhuo Ghost, Rong Yu was significantly smaller. In the dim light, Yuan Xin and the others could only see a silver light swirling around the bird's body. However, Geng Qi could see clearly that Rong Yu left a spiritual seal wherever he went, using his own spiritual power to set up an array to trap the Guhuo Ghost.
