Chapter 20 Candle

The cave has become lively recently, with many females coming and going, either to ask Lin Qiu for advice or to chat with her.

Ling Yun didn't care. He could chat with anyone in the tribe.

It was Song Mu who was having trouble adapting. Lin Qiu noticed this and wanted everyone to wait until Song Mu went out in the afternoon, but Ling Yun protested again, saying that he also wanted to have some time alone with Lin Qiu.

"Okay, okay," Lin Qiu saw four identical blue eyes looking at her again. She quickly made a decision before the two of them started arguing. "Then next time I'll tell them that I have things to do during the day, and ask them to come to me for a while in the evening when you two are together. That's okay, right? After all, almost everyone has learned how to knit by now."

After Lin Qiu finished speaking, he looked at Ling Yun and Song Mu, and felt that the situation at home seemed to be a little off.

In other people's homes, the females have the final say. Why is she here racking her brains all day trying to make them happy?

Ling Yun hugged her, his big body pressed against hers, his lips pressed against the back of her neck as he spoke, "Xiao Qiu is the best."

Lin Qiu felt a little itchy on the back of her neck and was about to push him away when Ling Yun was pulled down by Song Mu.

Song Mu said calmly, "If you like to hang out with them, just go ahead and play with them."

Lin Qiu's heart suddenly warmed: "It's okay to interact with others. I still prefer to be with you two."

Seeing that Ling Yun was so attached to her and Song Mu was so sensible, she couldn't just take care of herself.

I still have to live my life with them.

Hearing her say this, Ling Yun happily picked up Lin Qiu and said, "I like being with Xiaoqiu too. I like being with Xiaoqiu the most!"

After dinner in the evening, Lin Qiu went out again to look around the tribe to see if he could find anything valuable.

She looked carefully at the familiar things in the tribe, and found that they had many similarities with things in the mountains.

She had never observed them carefully in the tribe before, but now when she looked at these things in the tribe, she couldn't help but sigh at the rich species in Qishan.

"Ling Yun, I want that."

Lin Qiu pointed, and Ling Yun looked up and saw unknown small fruits on the tall tree trunk.

This can't really be considered a fruit. It's only the size of a fingertip, yellowish-brown in color, and covered with a thick layer of white substance. This tree has no name, and even birds won't eat its fruit.

However, if Lin Qiu wanted some, Ling Yun helped her pick some.

"What do you want this for?" Ling Yun handed the fruit in his hand to Lin Qiu.

Lin Qiu took the fruit in his hand and scratched it lightly with his fingernails.

It's wax.

In the mountains, villagers would pick Chinese tallow trees and extract the wax from the top to make candles for lighting.

"Ling Yun, let's go back and get the animal skin bags and take more stuff back."

"Okay," Ling Yun glanced at Song Mu, "Go home and find a bag and bring some more for home. Xiao Qiu and I will continue shopping."

Song Mu didn't say anything. He stared at Ling Yun for a while, then turned and left.

Ling Yun thought to himself, he is sensible.

Then someone took Lin Qiu's hand and walked happily around the tribe.

The summer season in the beast world is very long, and the temperature is not suitable for long periods of time, only about ten days. Soon the rainy season will come, which will last for about thirty days. It will rain continuously without a clear sky, and the already dim cave will be even darker.

In the winter, people used to seal the caves with several thick layers of animal skins. There was no light at all, and it was not convenient to light a large torch in the closed cave, otherwise it would be very stuffy.

This problem can be solved by making candles. A small candle consumes limited oxygen in a large cave, and it burns continuously.

Lin Qiu finds things to do every day and is simply the busiest female in the tribe.

She used hot water to scrub off the waxy skin on the wax fruit, and then extracted the wax on the top layer after the water cooled.

"Is this delicious too, Xiaoqiu?"

Ling Yun saw Lin Qiu treating these unknown wild fruits that could be found everywhere as treasures, cooking and washing them. When he saw her fish out a layer of white stuff from the water, he thought it was something edible like sweet fruit juice powder.

Song Mu came over to take a look and said, "Such a big bag of fruit can only hold this little bit."

The animal skin bag in the Beast World was so big that it could almost fit Lin Qiu.

But the amount of wax extracted was only enough to fill a stone bowl.

Lin Qiu said, "It's not for eating. It's not fully cooked yet. It needs to be boiled again to filter out the impurities inside. Then it can be lit for lighting."

"Lighting? Wouldn't it be enough to light a fire?" Ling Yun pointed at the fire at the cave entrance. "This seems too little, it's really a bit troublesome. Well... but if you like, it's not bad to kill time."

The orcs of the Somali Continent didn’t know that oil could burn, and they had no idea what Lin Qiu had extracted.

Lin Qiu asked Ling Yun to put the stone bowl on the fire and heat it until the wax melted, and then filter it with a small square towel woven from cotton wool. Ling Yun was heartbroken when he saw this. This was something that Lin Qiu had worked so hard to comb wool and twist yarn to weave, and it was actually dirty like this.

He looked at Song Mu angrily: "Why can't you learn to knit wool?"

Song Mu raised her eyelids and looked at him, then shifted her gaze elsewhere: "You are the same."

Ling Yun was a little crazy.

"Okay, okay, that's all."

Lin Qiu inserted a cotton thread into the bamboo tube, then poured the last extracted wax into it and waited for it to solidify. A large bag of wax could only be used to make two candles.

Fortunately, there are many such trees in the tribe. No birds like to eat their fruits, so they grow densely. When the rainy season comes, the fruits will fall to the ground and rot, becoming nutrients that return to the trees.

By the time the candle had completely solidified, it was completely dark.

Lin Qiu couldn't wait to light the candle on the fire, then holding the candle in one hand and protecting the flame with the other, he walked into the cave.

The cave was pitch black, but Ling Yun and Song Mu had strong night vision, and they could see everything clearly without any lighting.

But when Lin Qiu held up the candle to illuminate the dark cave, they were still moved by the scene before them.

Because there was no wind in the cave, the candlelight was very quiet, casting the silhouette of Lin Qiu's profile on the stone wall.

The candle flame was so small, but it made the cave extremely bright.

"How about it? This is much more convenient than a campfire, right? And the flame is very stable." Lin Qiu dripped a drop of wax on the stone platform beside the bed and placed the candle firmly on it.

Ling Yun had to admire Lin Qiu's wisdom: "Xiao Qiu, can it keep burning like this?"

Burning wood and grass both have problems with fire size and sustainability. Dry grass is easy to ignite but will burn out quickly. However, if you want a fire to continue burning, it must be large enough, otherwise it will quickly go out because it cannot burn.
