Chapter 2 Wanping County in the Ming Dynasty

"Don't worry!" Zhao Xiaofei said, and began to roll up his long sleeves to avoid getting his clothes dirty or snagged. His movements were as comical as a clumsy bear. As the saying goes, if you don't seek death, you won't die. Just as Zhao Xiaofei finished taking several photos and was about to take one more before returning, someone nearby was flying a drone. It suddenly lost control and flew towards Zhao Xiaofei. The drone was so powerful that it knocked Zhao Xiaofei off the bridge.

Wu Yali and the people on the bridge were all stunned by the sudden scene. They had no time to react before they heard a plop and Zhao Xiaofei fell off the bridge, splashing into the water. Wu Yali was the first to react and immediately called out to the people around her.

"Help! Help! I can't swim!" Zhao Xiaofei paddled across the water, his wig falling off. The Hanfu, soaked in water, was heavy, straining his strength.

Wu Yali saw a man next to her, holding a plastic box that looked like it could float in the water. She immediately grabbed it and threw it down. She shouted to Zhao Xiaofei, "Hold on to the box!"

The man who lost his box shouted anxiously: "My box!"

Wu Yali said to the man, "I'll compensate you whatever amount you want! Come with me!"

Zhao Xiaofei was lucky; the box landed right next to him. He grabbed it, feeling safe at last. He felt weak all over, and the tension had drained his energy. He soon passed out! Fortunately, he held on! Meanwhile, people on shore were searching for a boat to rescue him. Wu Yali and her companions rowed to where Zhao Xiaofei had fallen into the water, but they couldn't find him. Wu Yali burst into tears, feeling she couldn't bear the responsibility.

Zhao Xiaofei held the box for an unspecified amount of time before he felt waves lapping against his legs, knowing he had reached shore. He slowly opened his eyes. At first, his vision was blurry, and what appeared to be a human face came into view. After a moment, his vision returned, and he finally saw clearly the terrifying face of a dead person. The person's face was a pale gray, and a white film covered their eyes. Their mouth was open, as if they were roaring.

Faced with such a terrifying scene, Zhao Xiaofei was so frightened that he sat up, still holding the box in his hand as he ran towards the riverbank. He felt as if every pore in his body had exploded. His heart was in his throat, and he ran weakly.

When he finally reached the riverbank, he looked back and saw that the riverbank was littered with dead bodies. There were about a dozen of them lying in all directions on the riverbank, and one or two bodies were floating in the water.

Zhao Xiaofei saw this scene and remembered that he had just drunk several sips of water. He felt nauseous and began to vomit. Just when he was about to vomit bile, a man dressed as a Ming Dynasty official came over and asked, "Did this young man encounter robbers?" Why did Zhao Xiaofei recognize him as a Ming Dynasty official at first glance? Because he particularly liked Ming Dynasty Hanfu, so he had a better understanding of what people in the Ming Dynasty wore. Since Zhao Xiaofei found a large number of corpses by the river, he knew that he must have traveled through time. After all, modern society would not allow so many corpses to be exposed in the wilderness. That was the capital! Unless he came to ancient times.

Now, a man dressed as a police officer appeared before him, and he knew he had traveled through time. And it was the Ming Dynasty. Zhao Xiaofei's mind was racing with thoughts of how to make up a lie to deceive this police officer.

So he said, "Just now a few bandits robbed my bag and almost chopped off my head. Luckily I recovered quickly, so I only lost some hair!"

"These damned thieves! We brothers chased them for an hour, but we didn't expect them to cross the river and injure you. This is all our fault, please forgive me!" said the officer. The officer saw that Zhao Xiaofei was dressed like a young master from a wealthy family in the capital, so he spoke respectfully.

"Hey! It's not your fault! Please, big brother, take me to Wanping City as soon as possible! I need to find a place to rest!"

"No problem! Sir, let me help you!" The officer stepped forward to help Zhao Xiaofei up and walked back step by step. Zhao Xiaofei then realized that he had floated to the other side of the river.

As Zhao Xiaofei walked, he asked, "Excuse me, what's your name, big brother?"

"What's the big deal?! My last name is Xiao, and I'm the fourth child in my family. Everyone calls me Xiao Si!"

"Oh! It's Brother Xiao Si! Why are there so many corpses in the river? What's going on?"

"Hey! There's a plague in the county town, and there's no time to bury many people. The people who deal with the bodies are too busy, so they just throw them into the river! These damn birds! How can anyone drink water if they throw them into the river?"

After the officer finished speaking, Zhao Xiaofei felt a chill in his heart. He had just spent who knows how long with those who died of the plague. If there were no medicine, he would definitely be dead. Even as he was frantically thinking about this, he and Xiao Si had already crossed Lugou Bridge and arrived at the Wanping city wall.

There were several guards at the city gate, seemingly checking the vehicles passing through. Seeing Xiao Si approaching, several people hurried over. A man in his thirties asked, "Brother Xiao Si! Have those thieves been caught? What's going on with this young master?"

"He ran away! Don't investigate anymore! Let's go back and report to the county magistrate! This is the young man I rescued on the road. It seems that he was robbed by those thieves and almost lost his life!" Xiao Si pointed at Zhao Xiaofei and said.

Zhao Xiaofei was reading a notice on the wall. He guessed at the traditional Chinese characters, but he could roughly grasp the meaning. It was a proclamation from the county magistrate, urging the public to stay indoors due to the widespread plague. The most important piece of information he could decipher from the notice was that today was July, the fourteenth year of the Chongzhen reign. Judging by the color of the paper and the ink, it must have been only a few days. Furthermore, the inscription on the city gate read "Gongji City," not "Wanping City."

But none of this mattered. The most important thing was how to leave? Or where to find streptomycin? Otherwise, I would die!
