These resentful complaints, like sewage in a gutter, happened to pour into the ears of Lei Zhennan who was not far away without missing a word.
His brows instantly twisted into knots.
His eyes were as fast as lightning as he swept over the figures huddled in the corner sheltering from the rain, whispering to each other. His eyes were so cold that it seemed as if they could scrape off three layers of frost.
Good job!
Aren’t these the survivors they kindly rescued from the edge of the abandoned city after their team expanded?
At that time, they were so hungry that their faces were pale and their legs trembled when they saw zombies. It was because they shared their precious food and water and provided shelter that they survived to this day.
How many days of peace have we had?
Just because we encountered some extreme weather, you dare to criticize the captain behind his back and incite discontent!
Lei Zhennan felt a surge of anger rushing to his forehead, but he did not explode immediately. Instead, he was amused by the shamelessness of these people, and a cold arc appeared at the corner of his mouth.
"Oh."
A very light sneer hit the hearts of several complainers like a heavy hammer.
They were suddenly startled and looked in the direction of the voice. They saw Lei Zhennan's angular face, which looked particularly sinister in the dim light, walking towards them with steady steps.
The rain wet his hair, but it could not diminish his imposing aura at all.
"Lei, Deputy Captain Lei..."
The young man who was complaining first suddenly lowered his voice, the color drained from his face, his eyes became evasive, and he looked like a mouse seeing a cat.
"Why don't you say anything?"
Lei Zhennan walked up to them and looked down at them condescendingly. His voice was calm, but it carried an intimidating pressure that brooked no room for argument.
"I heard you guys were chatting quite animatedly just now, about the base being bad, the captain making a misjudgment and bringing trouble to everyone else?"
He paused, and his tone suddenly turned harsh.
"Who picked you up from the zombies? And who stuffed the compressed biscuits into your starving mouths?"
"Now, because of a little storm, you've forgotten your last name?!"
"I'm telling you!"
Lei Zhennan suddenly raised his voice, like a thunderclap.
"Every decision the captain makes is to give everyone more hope of survival!"
"If anyone dares to stir up trouble behind the scenes and disrupt the morale of the army again, don't blame me, Lei Zhennan, for not recognizing anyone with my fists!"
Lei Zhennan is the deputy captain. He is a master of fighting skills. The murderous aura he exudes, which was honed in the sea of corpses and blood, is no less than that of Han Yi.
After he shouted like that, the team members suddenly fell silent, their heads lowered almost to their chests, not daring to even breathe, let alone utter a single word of rebuttal.
"snort!"
Lei Zhennan snorted coldly and swept his sharp eyes over them again. Seeing that they were indeed obedient, he turned around and continued to patrol the defense line.
However, as soon as he left, the reprimanded team members exchanged glances, and the oppressive silence was like a lake surface into which a stone was thrown, instantly rippling with a more turbulent undercurrent.
Only after Lei Zhennan's figure completely disappeared in the rain did one of them spat indignantly.
"Bah! What are you so arrogant about! He's just a vice-captain? Why are you looking down on me like that?"
"that is!"
The other person immediately echoed in a low voice, his tone filled with resentment.
"We are all human beings. Why does he act so arrogantly?"
"Are we wrong? Isn't this weather caused by poor decision-making? We're not allowed to speak out. This is simply bullying!"
"I think these veterans don't even consider us newcomers as their own!"
"When there's a good job or something good to offer, they'll definitely prioritize their own people first! Now that they're in trouble, they're taking it out on us!"
Dissatisfaction and suspicion grew wildly in their hearts like poisonous weeds, and they threw Lei Zhennan's warning to the back of their minds.
They felt that they had suffered a great injustice, and this injustice was caused by the "arbitrariness" and "discrimination" of Han Yi and Lei Zhennan.
But Lei Zhennan's deterrent power was still there, so even though those people were extremely resentful, they could only suppress it temporarily.
After all, there were still sandstorms and heavy rain outside, and the growls of zombies appeared from time to time. Without Han Yi's relatively well-equipped team, these ordinary people who didn't even have decent weapons might not be able to survive even a day.
What's more, they now have nothing in their hands and can't even find an extra compressed biscuit.
"Damn it, is this the end of it?"
The young man who had been scolded the most harshly by Lei Zhennan before waited until the rain became a little louder before he dared to lower his voice, his eyes full of unwillingness.
"What else? Going out now is like committing suicide."
A person next to him shrank his neck, obviously frightened by the harsh environment outside.
"Wait!" A sinister glint flashed in the leader's eyes. "Let's leave once this awful weather passes! We'll head south. I heard there are several large survivor bases over there. It's better than having to deal with people here!"
"But we have nothing: a car, food, water...how can we get there?"
The man grinned strangely: "If you don't have it, then go and take it! Don't they look down on us? Then let's take their things and live our good life!"
A vicious plan quietly sprouted in the hearts of several people who had long been twisted by resentment.
They decided to secretly stockpile supplies, and then find an opportunity to drive the team's car and sneak away!
In the next few days, these people seemed like different people.
The grumbling and complaining of the past are gone, replaced by a look of repentance and a willingness to work hard.
Once there is work in the warehouse and kitchen, they will come forward eagerly and rush to move and organize things.
