Squeak——!
The harsh sound of metal friction broke the silence, and the door of the rear compartment of the carriage was suddenly pulled open from the outside.
A beam of slightly dim countryside morning light suddenly pierced in, dispelling the extreme darkness and causing the three people inside who had just adapted to the darkness to subconsciously squint their eyes.
At the door stood a young man, tall in stature, with a simple yet somewhat upright face.
Seeing the three disheveled but sober figures in the carriage, Yu Nian's nerves, which had been tense all the way, suddenly relaxed, and an obvious look of joy appeared on his face.
"You're awake!"
My nervous heart finally settled back into my stomach.
However, this joy did not spread to the three people in the car.
Wang Yuejun, Zhang Ying, and Yu Gang were still tense, their eyes as sharp as hawks, looking straight at Yu Nian at the door, and Yu Bai following closely behind him, with scrutiny and vigilance.
Even though they knew that it was the brother and sister who risked their lives to rescue them from the river and cleverly avoided investigation, their instincts gained from years of working in the Discipline Inspection Commission made it difficult for them to let down their guard against any strangers.
In this world, people’s hearts are unpredictable. Who knows if these seemingly simple brother and sister have other intentions?
Yu Bai naturally felt this vigilance that was almost tangible.
Her clear eyes swept across the undisguised defensiveness on the three people's faces. She understood what was going on, but was not annoyed.
If it were her, she would also be suspicious after experiencing such a thing.
She took a step forward and said in a calm voice, "Are you all okay? Are you feeling unwell?"
As she spoke, she took out three unopened bottles of mineral water from her backpack and handed them over: "Drink some water first to replenish your water."
Yu Gang, the driver closest to the door and the youngest, subconsciously reached out to take the water and whispered, "Thank you."
But he just held the bottle tightly and had no intention of unscrewing the cap to drink the water immediately.
This subtle movement revealed their defensiveness.
Although Yu Nian is a few years older than Yu Bai, when it comes to worldly wisdom and scheming, he is far inferior to his sister who has experienced a tragic life.
He was a relatively straightforward person, even a little eccentric. Seeing this, he frowned slightly and spoke, unable to contain himself, his voice a little louder than before.
"You don't have to be so nervous! We siblings are not bad people!"
He leaned forward and spoke frankly.
"We were just driving by and saw a car fall into the river. We couldn't just stand by and watch it die, right?"
"Although I don't know exactly what you do, but looking at the scene, I can guess that you are not ordinary people. I guess you are in trouble. We just want to do a good thing, nothing else!"
These careless words, which almost revealed his own cards, stunned Wang Yuejun and the other two, and the scrutiny in their eyes faded a little.
Yu Bai, however, gave a thumbs up to his third brother in his heart.
She didn't think her third brother was impulsive or reckless at all.
Sometimes, when facing those superiors who are deep-minded and accustomed to speculation and calculation, such unconcealed frankness can actually open their closed hearts better than any carefully designed words.
Rather than beating around the bush and arousing suspicion, it is better to be open and honest from the beginning.
So, she didn't stop Yu Nian.
Instead, she took over the conversation right after Yu Nian finished speaking. Her tone remained calm, but with an unquestionable firmness:
"My third brother is right. My brother and I are just passing through, and we don't want to get involved in your disputes."
Her eyes swept over the three people one by one, clearly conveying her position.
"Saving people is our first instinct. Now that you've woken up and are out of danger, this is a good deed for us."
She paused and offered a practical solution.
"Now, do you want us to take you to a hospital in the city, or do you want to contact someone to pick you up? We can do a good deed."
"No!" Wang Yuejun blurted out his refusal.
