Chapter 1 Lucid Dreaming
Lin Xia followed the crowd to the top floor. Feeling a little dazed, she looked around and gradually regained her senses and her vision became clearer.
"It's another lucid dream," Lin Xia thought to herself. "What kind of scene is this this time?" She looked around and noticed that everyone's eyes were on her back.
She turned around and was stunned by what she saw in the distance.
The sea stretched to the horizon, and a huge cruise ship was anchored in it. It was larger than Lin Xia had ever seen before, completely white, with countless floors and windows.
What's shocking is that above it, an identical cruise ship is positioned head-to-head.
If you look closely from above, you'll see that the azure expanse isn't the sky, but the sea, with water constantly flowing back into the sea below.
Apart from the flowing water, the rest of the scene seemed like a still picture, yet it inexplicably made Lin Xia feel suffocated, and her heart pounded faster and faster.
As Lin Xia gazed at the scene, the exclamations around her faded into the distance, and in a daze, it seemed as if a small, pure white boat was flying towards her...
......
Opening her eyes, Lin Xia sat up abruptly, clutching her chest. Her heart was pounding, and a sense of urgency spread from her heart throughout her body.
After a while, Lin Xia turned on the bedside lamp, and the scene seemed to be engraved in her mind, becoming clearer and clearer.
Lin Xia picked up the thermos from the bedside table and drank several large gulps before feeling much more relaxed.
Looking at the time, it was already past 7 o'clock. Lin Xia, who couldn't fall back asleep after waking up, didn't think too much about it, got up, washed up, and went to work.
Three peaceful days passed, and finally the weekend arrived.
Lin Xia, lying on the bay window lost in thought, looked at the heavy rain outside and recalled the dream from that day.
She often has lucid dreams, dreams that are a jumble of random things, but most often they are about running for her life, being chased by all sorts of enemies, flying through the air, leaping between skyscrapers, running on the ground, dodging bullets, dodging that elusive presence...
In the end, without exception, they all suddenly found themselves stuck in the same place no matter how they tried to escape. They were so anxious that they woke themselves up.
After waking up, there is still a slight feeling of powerlessness, but it is forgotten in a short while, and the dreams are also quickly forgotten.
But to this day, that dream remains vividly etched in my mind, as if it were still there.
Lin Xia sank into the soft pillow, her mind wandering. Had she been reading too many apocalyptic novels?
The pattering rain made Lin Xia drowsy. She slept for an unknown amount of time, but the noise outside grew louder and louder, forcing Lin Xia, who was on the 6th floor, to open her eyes.
She looked down and was shocked when she saw it clearly. No wonder it was so noisy outside and in the hallway. It turned out that the water level had reached the third floor and the rain was getting heavier.
Lin Xia sat up in fright and peered out the window. The water had indeed reached the third floor, and the stairwell was extremely noisy. Judging from the noise, people downstairs had come up to avoid the flood.
After a moment of blankness, Lin Xia heard a knock on the door, ran barefoot to the door, and locked it from the inside.
Then I called my parents, only to find that my phone had no signal.
It was summer, and Lin Xia was wearing a tank top and shorts. Now that she had calmed down, she felt a chill.
Looking at the torrential rain outside, Lin Xia suppressed her anxiety and closed all the windows.
Then she ran into the bedroom, took out her autumn and winter clothes from the closet, found an autumn tracksuit, quickly changed into it, and also put on a pair of sneakers.
Lin Xia tied her hair up high, found a backpack, put her ID and power bank in it, then packed a summer tracksuit, an autumn tracksuit, and a set of thermal underwear. After thinking for a moment, she added a light down jacket, which wouldn't take up much space.
I put the two remaining bottles of water in the bag, poured the chocolate into the backpack, along with five small bread rolls, four sausages, three small packets of nuts, two packets of instant noodles, and three cartons of milk.
Hearing the sounds in the hallway getting louder and louder—banging on the door, cursing, and crying—Lin Xia frowned, glanced at the rising water level outside, but still didn't open the door. She didn't like people messing up her things.
Her mind raced, and remembering something, she quickly took out the medicine box and put the anti-inflammatory medicine, cold medicine, fever reducer, montmorillonite powder, and iodine into a waterproof bag, which she then stuffed into her backpack.
I tucked the small parasol into the side pocket of my backpack, and the other side held a thermos filled with boiling water.
I glanced out the window and could see the water level. The sounds in the hallway were getting quieter and quieter. I could hear someone climbing up from the 6th floor to the rooftop outside, and someone going into the apartment across the hall.
I took out a waterproof bag, put my phone in it, then put on a windbreaker, slung my backpack over my shoulder, and found the big raincoat that came with my electric scooter, covering myself and my backpack together.
After thinking for a moment, she quickly took out the large garbage bag she had bought, stuffed the clothes and shoes she had found into it, and then stuffed all the remaining garbage bags into it.
Looking at the house, which was already flooded, Lin Xia looked reluctantly at the little home she had lived in for more than a year.
She is a 26-year-old medical student who just graduated with a master's degree. Her parents found someone to help her stay at the hospital where she was doing her internship, so she rented this house and decorated it carefully for a long time.
This is the provincial capital. Even the top floors of old residential buildings are close to the hospital, and the rent isn't cheap. Now the whole place is flooded...
Lin Xia's parents don't live far away either; it usually only takes them a little over two hours to drive there. She had called them many times, but there was no signal. Lin Xia was very worried, but she couldn't go back right now.
She walked to the door, picked up the baseball bat she had bought for self-defense, opened the door, went out, and quickly closed it behind her.
There were still a few people in the hallway, and they started chattering as soon as they saw Lin Xia come out.
"You little girl, you won't open the door when I knock. Open the door and let us in to warm up, it's freezing!"
"Exactly, they have absolutely no compassion."
"Yes, in the face of disaster, we should all unite and help each other. You're bundled up so tightly..."
......
Lin Xia glanced at them, then looked at the increasing amount of water overflowing from the crack in the door. Everyone looked over and their eyes widened.
"Is this...is this even allowed to survive?"
"If the 6th floor floods, won't we have to go outside and get soaked in the rain?"
......
"Miss, could you give me some clothes? I'm a tenant on the second floor. We've met a few times. I was sleeping when the floodwaters came out, and I'm so cold..." a girl huddled in the corner whispered.
Lin Xia recognized her; she was a high school student. At that moment, her face was pale and her hair was still wet. Lin Xia walked over and opened the bag in her hand, saying, "Put it on quickly."
The girl was overjoyed: "Thank you, thank you." She quickly picked out a hooded tracksuit and a pair of sneakers to put on. Although the shoes were a bit big, they were much better than slippers.
"Um, miss, could you perhaps give some to us too..."
She took these things out to give to them; it wasn't that she lacked compassion, she just didn't want them to come into her house, even though her house might be flooded soon too.
Lin Xia took out two plastic bags and handed them to the girl from earlier before saying, "You two can split them."
