Su Wanwan wasn't afraid. Instead, she met his gaze without flinching and raised her voice to retort:
"Then why did you abandon me in the palace for over ten years and ignore me completely?"
"Now that I'm being asked to be a good father, am I just obligated to accept it?!"
Su Nan glared angrily, his eyes bloodshot: "Are you blaming me for not fulfilling my responsibilities as a father?"
“Isn’t that right?” Su Wanwan stood up and retorted with great force.
"You've gone too far!" Su Nan was so angry that he blew his beard and glared at his opponent.
Su Wanying's timid voice came from outside the door: "Second Uncle, someone has come to wish you a Happy New Year."
Su Nan glanced at the sky and said sternly, "I won't see her!"
They only came to offer New Year's greetings in the evening, which shows that they are not particularly close or respectful of each other.
He couldn't be bothered to deal with it.
Su Wanwan's expression grew even more impatient.
Wan Ying is my cousin, and she had been missing for three years. She always felt like she was living under someone else's roof here, and she was very sensible in her words and actions.
She put in a lot of effort to make Wan Ying more and more relaxed, and to make her feel somewhat like the mistress of the house.
The father's stern shouts could easily frighten Wan Ying.
Su Wanying paused for a moment and said, "They are from the Xie family. They won't leave even after we told them, and they insist on seeing you."
Su Nan raised an eyebrow, took a deep breath, straightened his clothes, and walked out.
Su Wanwan sat back down in her chair, exhausted, and took a big gulp of tea.
Her intention was not to have a falling out with her father.
But things escalated to this point in the course of the conversation.
After all, during those years of living under someone else's roof, and those nights spent secretly shedding tears under the covers, she had resented her father.
Which child doesn't want to grow up under the care of their parents?
Although the palace was magnificent, it was not her home.
Sometimes she even thought that she was not as good as those orphans without parents.
At least orphans can imagine that their parents loved them very much, but were forced to be separated by death and were unable to take care of them.
Her father was alive and well, yet he never visited her.
It's as if I don't have this daughter.
When she was little, the person she envied most was Princess Xiuyi, who had so much love.
They can always be arrogant and haughty, always think they're invincible.
Secondly, there's Zhou Wanxiu.
During holidays and festivals, she would happily put on new clothes and return to the Zhou family home.
When she returned to the palace, she was dressed in new clothes and jewelry, looking exquisite and beautiful, all carefully prepared by the Zhou family.
She could only watch helplessly as Zhou Wanxiu excitedly left the palace, promising to bring her a rabbit lantern from the Lantern Festival when she returned.
How I wish my family would be waiting outside the palace gates to take me home.
Unfortunately, no.
Sometimes, when grand court assemblies were held, the young Crown Prince Lu Xingjian would also attend and whisper in her ear upon returning:
“I saw your father today. He was wearing a blue court robe and had a beard.” Lu Xingjian put his little index finger to his lips to show her.
She pretended not to care, but she actually remembered it deeply.
My father often attended the morning court session, which was held in front of Fengtian Gate.
Officials attending the morning court session entered the palace through the Donghua Gate every morning.
Donghua Gate is not far south of Qingning Palace.
Once, she secretly hid near Donghua Gate and stared intently at the group of civil officials dressed in blue court robes and with mustaches, trying to figure out which one was her father.
However, there were many civil officials dressed like that, and she really couldn't recognize them.
For a time, whenever she saw a civil official wearing a blue court robe, she would take a second look.
She returned to the Su family home and stayed there for half a month until the fire at Qingning Palace.
Seeing his cold-hearted father, stepmother, and newborn brother.
She then realized that she was just an outsider with the surname Su.
They are the truly harmonious and happy family.
From beginning to end, the only person she could rely on was Empress Dowager Zhou, who had raised her.
Now that "fatherly love" has arrived so many years late, how can she accept it calmly?
Su Wanwan didn't know how long she had been sitting there.
Until Su Wanying, with a solemn face, walked in carrying an oil lamp and said nervously:
"Sister, your second uncle just agreed to your marriage."
Su Wanwan rolled her eyes, her gaze somewhat dazed as it fell on Su Wanying.
So, it was Lu Xingjian who came to propose marriage?
Su Wanying pursed her lips, feeling a little dry: "To be someone's second wife."
Su Wanwan lowered her eyes.
Lu Xingjian remarried after being deposed, which meant he was a second wife.
How easy is it for a divorced widow to sit in that position?
Su Wanying was not happy and continued, "They said that the former wife gave birth to a child and went to be someone's stepmother."
Su Wanwan paused.
He raised an eyebrow at Su Wanying.
Stepmother?
The former wife?
It took her a while to react, and she clenched her hands, asking, "Who came to propose marriage?"
Su Wanying pouted: "They said it was Xie Pi, the second son of the former Grand Secretary Xie, who was also a third-ranked scholar. His uncle, Xie Di, brought him to propose marriage."
"Sister, how could your second uncle marry you off to such a man? He has sons and daughters, and he even has three concubines at home."
Su Wanwan felt cold all over.
Because of her questioning and disobedience, did her father hastily betroth her to someone else?
"Sister, you should go and see for yourself!" Su Wanying looked at Su Wanwan anxiously.
All she knew was that her sister and Lord Xiao were in love.
Second Uncle seemed quite satisfied with Lord Xiao, but then suddenly turned cold.
Now, however, she has taken a fancy to Xie Tanhua, a scholar whose family situation is quite complicated.
It's really incomprehensible.
Su Wanwan stood up and walked towards the outer courtyard. Su Wanying followed beside her, quietly explaining what she had overheard:
