Maggie never reappeared.
Su Wanwan never mentioned Ma Ji again, but she did overhear someone in the next room of the study mentioning Ma Ji's husband, Bi Chun.
Su Wanwan went over and took a look.
Bi Chun was quite handsome and tall, but his face was somewhat rugged and his temperament was cold and hard from years of living on the border, exposed to the wind and sand.
Compared to Lu Xingjian's well-maintained, delicate, and fair skin, she is several levels below.
After going to bed that night, Su Wanwan still asked, "Maggie wrote to me saying you came to see her."
Lu Xingjian, who was almost asleep, opened his eyes and looked at her when he heard this: "Why are you bringing her up again?"
It seems like she's just stirring up trouble for no reason.
Su Wanwan pursed her lips, turned over, and faced away from him: "It's okay."
Lu Xingjian yawned, turned her body around, and complained.
"You've seen it too, I'm so busy every day that I'm almost too tired to deal with you, how can I have the mind to think about other nonsense?"
Su Wanwan: "Then how did she know your whereabouts and even meet with you?"
"I, the empress, am completely in the dark and know nothing at all."
Lu Xingjian's eyes darkened. "How was I supposed to know that Bi Chun was such a gossip, so shameless, and even pushing his wife in front of me?"
Su Wanwan persisted: "Even if you don't like Ma Ji, he wouldn't dare to make wild guesses about the emperor's intentions."
Lu Xingjian frowned, glanced at her briefly, then turned away angrily, refusing to pay her any more attention.
Seeing this, Su Wanwan didn't say anything more.
Just a moment later, Lu Xingjian's voice rang out again:
"I wanted to kill her back then, but you said she would be useful to keep her alive."
"Now look what's happened, you insist that I like her. I think you're the one who likes her so much, you can't stand not using her to provoke me."
"I work so hard and I'm so tired, and you not only don't appreciate it, but you also go and make trouble for me. Isn't that going too far?"
Su Wanwan felt a tightness in her chest, making it hard to breathe.
So it was her fault?
"Everyone in the world knows you like Maggie, but you're the only one who's stubbornly insisting you don't."
"Anyway, as long as I don't see you two having sex with my own eyes, you can completely deny it."
Lu Xingjian turned around and hugged her:
"My wife, I really don't like her. How can I control what others say?"
He paused for a moment, then said, "Men have a lot to do. I spend all my free time with you and the kids, so I really don't have time to worry about anything else."
"Let's not argue over other people, okay? I love you so much, can't you feel it?"
Su Wanwan said, "You know best whether you have ulterior motives towards her or not."
Lu Xingjian's jawline tightened, and after a moment of silence, he said, "Then I'll have someone kill her."
Su Wanwan didn't believe him.
He was merely using a feigned retreat to force her to make a statement.
Just like how she casually told him to kill Liu Qi back then.
Isn't Liu Qi still alive and kicking?
"What good would killing her do? She'll still live on in your heart."
Lu Xingjian was full of resentment:
"What exactly do you want me to do? It seems I have to stay far away from her wherever she is, otherwise I'll never be able to clear my name."
He was incredibly sleepy, but the argument actually made him more alert. He rolled over and pinned her beneath him, rubbing his nose against hers.
"Let's stop talking about her and do something fun."
Su Wanwan knew that he would use this trick to coax her if the two of them kept arguing.
He thought that if he could make her happy in bed, she wouldn't bring up the past.
In reality, the problem has always been there and has never been solved.
If she brings it up again, it will be seen as her being ignorant and unreasonable.
...
The atmosphere, however, seemed to be growing increasingly tense.
Everyone seemed to be tacitly waiting for a certain moment to arrive.
March 17th was the day the Northern Yuan held the Suluding Conference.
The conference venue, the Eighth White House, was located less than 300 li north of Yansui City.
Lu Xingjian put on his armor, but gave Su Wanwan a set of commoner's coarse cloth clothes and took her to the basement of an ordinary house.
"Stay here and wait for me to come back."
Su Wanwan nodded solemnly: "I'll wait for you."
Lu Xingjian stroked her hair, looked at her intently for a few moments, and then leaned down to kiss her eyes.
"Unless I come in person, do not show yourself to anyone who comes to summon you."
"There's food, drink, and medicine here; you could stay for a month without any problem."
Su Wanwan feigned impatience and complained, "There's still a month left, hurry up and come back, I'm still waiting for you to take me back to the capital!"
Lu Xingjian chuckled softly, deliberately ruffled her hair, and strode away.
For some reason, Su Wanwan felt a soreness at the root of her nose.
She did not try to dissuade the man from going to the battlefield.
He has his own ambitions and aspirations, and all she can do is not hold him back.
In this unfamiliar border town, she couldn't even help him stabilize the rear; she was just a burden.
This place is stocked with lots of dried meat and dry rations, as well as thermos flasks filled with boiling water, charcoal, and small stoves.
The bed was clean and the blankets were thick.
There was only a tiny, very tall window that allowed for ventilation outside, and it was possible to hear what was happening outside and see whether it was day or night.
She could even brew some tea here.
However, Su Wanwan did not have the leisure or inclination for such things.
The situation was so serious that she had to be hidden in the basement, which shows that Yansui City was not very safe.
If burning charcoal attracts the attention of someone with ulterior motives, then things will get complicated.
The first day passed quietly.
Before dawn the next day, screams and the sound of clashing swords could be heard outside.
