"It seems we have no other choice. This is the only way out of Xirong Mountain."
Li Yu stared at the canyon ablaze with flames, her brows furrowed slightly.
"Let's take a closer look first."
Li Yu rode Xiao Hei slowly towards the canyon.
As they drew closer, the canyon became clearer, and Li Yu finally saw what was happening above it.
Each cluster of firelight was spaced about several tens of meters apart, stretching into the distance.
Beside each firelight stood several people, their expressions wary, watching every move below the canyon.
“They’re from the safe zone.” Li Yu noticed the uniforms they were wearing.
When Li Yu saw that these people were all wearing waterproof shoes, he instantly realized something.
"Could this be the Golden Summit Safe Zone that the wealthy businessman mentioned before?"
Meanwhile, people in some safe zones below the canyon were shouting excitedly, seemingly having made a great discovery.
Li Yu also vaguely saw what appeared to be the corpse of a strange beast ahead.
It seems that the horde of monsters has successfully crossed the canyon. Although the people in the safe zone dared not step forward to stop them, they took the opportunity to kill one of the monsters.
Some people from the safe zone are harvesting the carcasses of the alien beasts below.
Suddenly, a gust of wind blew in from the canyon, bringing rain that lashed Li Yu's face.
Several strange sounds followed.
"Slap, slap."
Li Yu looked in the direction of the sound.
He then noticed that beside the firelight in the canyon, there were not only guards from the safe zone standing, but also many refugees.
However, all of these refugees were lying on the ground.
No wonder he didn't notice these refugees earlier.
Before Li Yu could even ask questions, a guard raised his arm and swung his whip forcefully, lashing the refugees lying on the ground.
"You lowly commoner, you dare to slack off while on guard duty?"
"Slap, slap."
With a few lashes, bright red welts instantly appeared on the refugee's body, and his painful screams echoed all around.
"Stop hitting him."
"I will never do it again. I will never fall asleep again."
The beaten refugee rolled on the ground, while the faces of the other refugees were filled with deep fear.
Li Yu's gaze sharpened: "They are treating refugees like slaves."
“Look, those refugees are helping to keep watch,” Fu Xiyao said, pointing to the top of the canyon.
The displaced people who had been whipped were now forced to lie prostrate beside the firelight.
They kept a close watch on their surroundings, their eyes filled with endless despair.
Upon closer inspection, Li Yu discovered that many refugees were lying next to each ball of fire.
There were far more vagrants and slaves in the canyon than people in the safe zone.
"A large group of people is approaching from behind," Fu Xiyao warned.
"Let's wait a bit, so we don't get spotted." Looking at the Grand Canyon ahead, Li Yu knew he was definitely not the only one who wanted to go there.
Meanwhile, in a sheltered corner of the canyon.
The wealthy merchant was sitting leisurely on a huddle of a displaced person lying on the ground. The smooth silk robe on the merchant's body stood out conspicuously.
Opposite him stood a familiar figure—Zhang Biao.
The wealthy businessman's face was full of smiles: "Master Zhang, I have already put your gold bars away. You can rest assured that our Golden Peak Safe Zone will help you solve this problem."
Zhang Biao remained silent, a hint of ruthlessness in his eyes.
The wealthy businessman confidently pointed to the continuous flames in the canyon:
"With us here guarding the place, no one can escape our eyes."
Zhang Biao nodded slightly: "I hope so."
As time went on, a group of agile scavengers were the first to reach the mouth of the canyon.
They stood before the canyon, gazing at the continuous flames, their faces showing hesitation, not daring to move forward rashly.
Soon, more and more people arrived, and the area in front of the canyon entrance gradually became crowded.
The Wangjiaqiu safety zone and the large group of refugees followed closely behind, quickly converging here.
In the crowd, Ma Yuanbai had quietly returned to the ranks of the refugees without anyone noticing.
As the crowd at the canyon entrance grew denser, the atmosphere gradually became tense.
"No, we can't go any further!" a refugee shouted in terror upon seeing the firelight ahead.
The refugee's face turned pale instantly, and his voice was filled with obvious fear:
"This is the territory of the Golden Summit Safe Zone. They...they are not human!"
"What did you say?"
The refugees from the Black Mountain area nearby asked eagerly, trying to learn more about the situation.
“Last time they…they killed a lot of passing refugees and kidnapped quite a few people. I saw it with my own eyes.”
The refugee's voice trembled, as if that horrific scene were replaying before his eyes:
"They were like hunters, utterly cruel!"
"The Golden Summit Safe Zone?" A burly man clenched his fists, his eyes burning with fury.
"Last time, it was these bastards who stole our supplies from the Xiaozhu Safe Zone and even injured our people!"
Even people from other safe zones hate the Golden Summit safe zone.
"Don't you know?"
A woman, her face streaked with rain, spoke with a hoarse voice, tears welling in her eyes:
"The people in the Golden Summit Safe Zone are deliberately hunting and killing refugees in the wild; they even... they even take pleasure in it!"
"They are demons!" a man with a scarred face recounted his ordeal with equal fury.
“The attacks in the Golden Summit Security Zone are indiscriminate; they spare no one, whether they are the elderly or children.”
