Fu Xiyao and Li Yu exchanged a look of disbelief.
"refuge?"
This word was like a bombshell in their minds, instantly creating a huge uproar.
They actually heard the word "shelter" here.
That was an ancient refuge building meticulously constructed by ancient humans hundreds of years ago.
Legend has it that the shelter is not only rock-solid, protecting humanity from the relentless torrents of rain.
It also contains various powerful weapons and amazing technologies left behind by a once glorious civilization.
Li Yu carefully sensed the energy fluctuations emanating from the group and confirmed that they were just ordinary scavengers, not awakened individuals with superpowers.
So Li Yu led Fu Xiyao out boldly and walked confidently toward the crowd.
The scavenger team sitting together quickly noticed Li Yu and his companion getting closer.
However, they did not show the slightest hostility, but instead all looked over.
The leader looked at Li Yu's tattered clothes and badly worn shoes, with only his raincoat intact, and a hint of curiosity appeared in his eyes.
The others even said with a hint of pity, "How did this person end up in such a miserable state?"
Li Yu: "......"
He also heard these people's comments about him, and looked down at his clothes with a lack of confidence. Was he really as bad as they said?
Even someone like him, who was doing quite well in Black Mountain, was described as miserable by ordinary scavengers here.
However, when these scavengers saw Fu Xiyao behind Li Yu, their eyes widened in surprise:
"Someone who's doing so badly has a wife? That's fucking unbelievable."
"This world is truly insane."
"Girl, are you blind?"
"Even beggars have wives, why don't I?"
Li Yu was speechless, while Fu Xiyao lowered her head shyly.
Although their words didn't sound pleasant, Li Yu didn't sense any malice in them.
The leader extended his hand, signaling them to be quiet, and then greeted Lu Qiu first:
"Are you two refugees?"
"How did you know?" Li Yu asked, somewhat surprised.
The leader thought to himself, "They've all fallen on such a miserable state that anyone can tell they're refugees at a glance. Is there any need to ask?"
He looked at Li Yu with pity, guessing that the man was probably starving and wanted to beg for food from them.
Thinking of this, he turned to his head and said, "Third brother, get them some dry rations."
"Okay!" The man called the third brother readily agreed, then turned to look for something.
After the leader finished speaking, he beckoned Li Yu and the other person over.
Li Yu and Fu Xiyao went under the rain shelter.
The third brother handed over a piece of bright green food.
Li Yu and Fu Xiyao looked at the strangely green thing and hesitated to take a bite.
Seemingly sensing Li Yu's thoughts, the leader smiled and explained:
"These are algae fiber strips, a type of dry food made from algae. Don't worry about eating them, they're not poisonous."
Li Yu took the green algae fiber strips, but didn't eat them immediately. Instead, she asked curiously.
"Aren't you afraid that we are the enemy and will ambush you?"
"Haha, he even knows how to ambush people." The two scavenger teams exchanged a smile, realizing that Li Yu was completely unaware of the situation here.
Someone explained, "Is this your first time visiting Xirong Mountain?"
"This is the territory of Vault 7207. Anyone who dares to break the law here will be beheaded."
"Illegal and criminal activities?" Li Yu asked curiously, finding the term quite new.
"It's the shelter's rules. Anyone who violates the rules is committing a crime."
Li Yu and Fu Xiyao were both incredulous that such a thing existed.
"Where did you flee from?" asked the leader of another scavenger team.
"Black Mountain," Li Yu answered truthfully.
"Black Mountain? I think I've heard of it." The captain looked somewhat bewildered.
“I know, it seems to be the westernmost territory in our Xirong Mountain region,” the subordinate replied.
"Oh, so it's a remote area." The captain suddenly realized.
The group discussed amongst themselves, then glanced at Li Yu's attire:
"Are people in Montenegro living such miserable lives...?"
Li Yu answered somewhat helplessly and without much confidence:
"It's alright..."
“With your living conditions, you could be applying for subsidies,” a scavenger said with a laugh, looking at the two of them.
"A subsidy?" Fu Xiyao asked curiously.
"It's for people who are starving to death; they can get food for free. If you don't have clothes, they'll give you clothes too," the scavenger explained.
"Are the people in the shelter really that nice?" Li Yu felt her survival knowledge was being challenged.
Let alone shelters, even in ordinary safe zones, the only response to refugees is contempt and slaughter.
Li Yu couldn't believe that there were still places in this world that provided free food to refugees.
Seeing that Li Yu and Fu Xiyao knew nothing and were like two country bumpkins who had never seen the world, the scavengers felt a little superior.
The scavenger then took the initiative to introduce himself to Li Yu:
"You've come to the right place after all. This is Xirong Mountain. Everyone here must abide by the regulations issued by Shelter 7207, so you're safe now."
"One of the rules is that no one may harm others, not even those who are awakened."
Another scavenger chimed in:
