Chapter 9
Lin Wan felt like she must have been bewitched, that Chen Yu might be capable of some kind of witchcraft. Otherwise, how else could she explain the fact that when she regained consciousness, she had already changed into a black dress in her room and shown it to Chen Yu?
Just because of his words, "Sister, I want to see it."?
It's ridiculous and absurd.
Realizing what she was doing, Lin Wan's hand subconsciously trembled, and the bow tied around her waist instantly deformed. She gritted her teeth and tried to untie it, but the smooth black ribbon proved incredibly difficult to tame. As she pressed harder, the ordinary knot gradually expanded and distorted, with no end in sight.
Hiss, this is not right.
Lin Wan took a deep breath and felt panicked after realizing it belatedly. This shouldn't be the case. How could the stupid plot of an idol drama happen at this moment?
Lin Wan frowned, pulled the ribbon and turned around, facing the bathroom in her room with her back, turning her head back, trying to untie it by her own strength.
The black ribbons were tangled and it was hard to see where the source was.
One minute passed, two minutes passed—
A thin layer of sweat broke out on the tip of Lin Wan's nose, but the knot was not clearly visible due to the poor lighting in the bathroom, and it gradually became larger.
Three minutes later, Lin Wan decided not to waste any more time, gave up trying to solve the problem himself, and began to think about seeking help from others.
Four minutes later, Lin Wan knocked on Chen Yu's door with a heavy knot hanging from her waist.
"I know this will make me look stupid."
As soon as the door opened, Lin Wan started to take precautions, reaching out and pressing Chen Yu's shoulders, trying to appear normal and smart.
Chen Yu raised his eyebrows, looked at Lin Wan, and was silent for a moment.
"It's beautiful," he said.
Obviously, Chen Yu misunderstood what Lin Wan wanted to say.
The little black dress's nipped-in waist was a perfect complement to her figure. From the angle Chen Yu was standing, he could even see the smooth curve of Lin Wan's shoulders and neck, and the delicate curve of her back. She was very fair, and against the black dress, it was almost impossible to look away.
But, no.
Chen Yu turned his gaze away, staring at the vase in front of the door. The vase had sinuous lines, a kind of pure and elegant beauty, but it also had an inexplicable ability to captivate people.
"Thank you." Lin Wan thanked him. His praise seemed sincere and straightforward, but it was obvious that her attention was no longer on whether it was suitable for her.
She turned around neatly, revealing a large area of fair skin, and stated her request: "I can't untie this, can you help me untie it?"
Chen Yu withdrew his gaze from the vase and fixed it on Lin Wan's back.
His eyelashes trembled slightly, and he looked a little helpless.
Her skin exposed to the air, Lin Wan waited for nearly two minutes but didn't feel Chen Yu move. Suspicious, she tilted her head and saw Chen Yu standing there, looking a little confused, staring at her expression without saying a word.
"It's here." Lin Wan thought Chen Yu didn't see the knot he had tied, so he pointed behind his back.
Chen Yu still stood there, even a little afraid to look at her.
Lin Wan understood what was going on instantly, turned around and said, "It's normal that you're not good at untying knots. I'll go to the first floor to ask Aunt Chen for help."
"After all, everyone has things they are not good at." Lin Wan curved her eyes and looked at Chen Yu's lowered eyes.
Lin Wan felt a little frustrated. Thinking about it carefully, helping her untie the knot behind her might indeed be a rather private matter.
Moreover, this knot is probably difficult to untie. If it really doesn't work, it doesn't matter if you just cut it off. Lin Wan thought about it and didn't notice that the pink hair was clinging to Chen Yu's earlobe.
Lin Wan blinked, trying to change the subject.
Chen Yu on the opposite side took three or four breaths and finally opened his eyelids.
Lin Wan, unable to think of anything else to talk about, turned around and was about to leave when she felt a subtle tug at her waist. The silk ribbon gently caressed her waist, bringing with it a strange, tingling sensation.
Lin Wan was pulled into the house by the force.
The door was closed by a hand, and she faced the door, as if she was reflecting on her mistakes. The ribbon behind her transmitted a subtle force.
Her back felt a little cold, but the hand that accidentally touched her back was warm.
Chen Yu tried his best to keep his hands away from Lin Wan's exposed skin. He didn't want to leave a bad impression on her. But the ribbon was wrapped too tightly, and the back of his hand always touched her smooth back.
They separated immediately after touching. Chen Yu pursed his lips as he looked at the retracted hand.
He felt the whole room heating up, and he seemed to have no power to resist the heat.
"Sister, how on earth did you manage to achieve such a great unity?" He tried to speak, but his throat was a little dry.
He calls her sister.
Lin Wan stood there for a long time, then slightly moved his shoulders and said, "I don't know where I went wrong. I tried so hard to untie it, but it just kept getting more and more tangled. I just couldn't get it untied."
Chen Yu's hands were shaking slightly. He had no idea that an unintentional sentence would bring him such aftershocks.
"Is that so?" He replied with his head lowered, looking intently at the knot.
They are siblings, so this kind of thing is normal.
But that’s where it ends, Chen Yu thought, it can only end here.
The bony hands kept moving back and forth through the smooth black ribbon, and the knot that originally looked like a disaster slowly unfolded.
Like untying the ribbon on a gift box.
Light shone in from the windowsill, and Chen Yu stood behind Lin Wan, blocking some of the light.
Lin Wan stood there, his mind wandering slightly.
She felt that Chen Yu's movements were very slow, even cautious.
When I was a child, my mother also helped me unbutton the back of my clothes in this way. Her movements were always gentle and soothing, just like a paintbrush touching canvas.
She always felt that such a mother would not cheat. Jiang Yuexing was such a gentle person. She would feel sad even when the plants in the greenhouse withered. How could she bear to hurt her family like this?
The knot on the back was untied. Chen Yu stroked the ribbon with his fingertips for the last time and slowly let go of his hand.
He slightly turned sideways, and the sunlight completely shone on Lin Wan's back, which was incredibly beautiful.
Chen Yu exhaled slowly.
Every time they went to the old house for a so-called family dinner, Lin Wan would always be invited to perform in front of the huge grand piano in the living room. This was Jiang Yuexing's way of hoping that Lin Wan would win the favor of the two elders by showing off her talents.
So, in addition to his busy studies, Lin Wan took some time out to practice piano with his former piano teacher.
The air in Jiangcheng had been cloudy for quite a few days, but it cleared up on this day. The sun shone directly on the ground, like a young boy who was ignorant of the immensity of the world.
Lin Wan asked Uncle Jiang to drop her off at the intersection, and she walked alone to her teacher's residential complex holding a parasol.
This is an old neighborhood, with numerous one-way streets making it easy to get in but difficult to exit. There's even an old police station across the street, and the narrow road is clogged with parked cars on both sides. Just driving on it makes you feel anxious.
Lin Wan knocked on the door while flipping through the music sheet. Teacher Yang was over sixty, her graying hair casually tied up with a silver hairpin, and a delicate bracelet on her slightly skinny wrist. She looked at Lin Wan with a smile on her face.
Teacher Yang is also Jiang Yuexing's piano teacher.
Since entering high school, Lin Wan has rarely practiced the piano, focusing all her attention on her studies. She hopes her father will be happy, hoping that he will pay more attention to her based on her small achievements, but despite her best efforts, she still hasn't received the response she deserves.
Lin Wan stayed at Teacher Yang's house for an entire afternoon, like a small boat hiding in a safe harbor.
As dinner approached, although Teacher Yang repeatedly asked Lin Wan to stay for dinner, Lin Wan still refused.
She was worried that if she stayed in her own cozy place for too long, she would not be able to bear the severe cold.
At the blue hour, cars on the road are leaving their taillights on, ready to go home.
Chen Yu had been running around for two or three days on Yaya's case and needed to go to the police station today for further investigation. He declined a request from a classmate to get together and brought Yaya and her mother, Chen Xiuhua, to the police station.
When he had nothing, they helped him.
At this moment, they are suffering and we should lend a helping hand.
"Is this their third time coming to our house?" Under the incandescent light, a police officer in a blue uniform sat opposite a wooden table and chair, looking at Chen Xiuhua, who looked a little timid.
Because of long-term exposure to the sun, Chen Xiuhua's skin was dark and reddish, and her hands on the wooden table kept rubbing her swollen joints.
Chen Xiuhua swallowed and moved her lips to respond, "Yes." Then she picked up the water glass on the table and drank it all, as if she had made a great decision.
"But it shows here that this seems to be your first time reporting a case." The police asked in an impartial manner.
Yaya, who was wearing a skull bracelet, was clearly uneasy. She shifted on the stool in an almost irritated manner. Finally, Yaya couldn't stand it any longer.
"We have shown you the photos, how can you not believe us? You were there at the scene, uncle." Her originally tough tone softened after she noticed Chen Yu's eyes. Yaya knew that she was a little too anxious.
They called the police that same day, and two officers briefly toured their house before declaring they would open a case. However, the six debt collectors were clearly veterans, and even at the police station, they insisted they had nothing to do with the debt. The old neighborhood lacked security cameras, and there was no evidence pointing to them.
So the six people were just given a verbal warning and then sent back home.
Yaya noticed that the look they gave her when they left the police station was fierce and mocking.
——They will definitely come to take revenge on me, Yaya thought.
"Yaya, you and Xiaoyu go out first. Mom has a few words to say to Officer Zhang alone." Chen Xiuhua forced a smile on her yellow face full of sun spots and coaxed Yaya to go out.
Yaya was unwilling and turned her head slightly to pretend that she had not heard what Chen Xiuhua said. Her puppy was kicked to death by them. How could she swallow this anger?
Chen Xiuhua could only say to Chen Yu: "Xiaoyu, help Auntie take Yaya out, okay?"
Chen Xiuhua looked at Chen Yu earnestly.
Chen Yu nodded and pulled Yaya's arm.
Yaya immediately resisted: "I don't want to leave. What is there that I can't listen to? Aren't they just collecting debts?" Her eyes, which were painted with thick eyeliner, were filled with tears. The low-quality cosmetics dissolved in water, gradually revealing her original appearance.
"Chen Yu, this has nothing to do with you. Please go away." She turned around and said to Officer Zhang.
"Let's go." Chen Yu patted her shoulder fearfully.
Yaya didn't respond.
Officer Zhang looked at the farce in front of him, touched his frowning brows, and took a sip of the strong tea in the thermos.
I can’t drag Chen Yu down any longer, Yaya thought with determination, pursing her bloodless lips.
Officer Zhang finally spoke: "You two go to the waiting room first. Ms. Chen and I will have a private chat."
The room was quiet for a moment, and Chen Xiuhua looked at Yaya with eyes that seemed to be begging, as if she was forcing an order.
Yaya still walked out and sat on the metal chair in front of the door with Chen Yu. She could hardly hold back her tears, which kept sliding down her cheeks, mixed with the cheap foundation. She looked very miserable from a distance.
Chen Yu handed the tissue to Yaya.
Yaya didn't take it at first, until her cheeks could no longer bear any more tears, then she took it scrambling for it, without any hesitation.
So, when Lin Wan entered the police station, he saw this scene.
Chen Yu comforted the rebellious girl with skulls all over her face and heavy makeup? Their relationship, hiss, Lin Wan felt that Chen Yu always brought her some surprises.
Lin Wan felt that he could figure out what happened just by using his toes to figure it out.
It's just a matter of emotional hurt, the love-hate relationship between two people, and so on.
She suddenly got goosebumps and paused for two seconds before following the back of the taxi driver in front of her. She had never expected that the driver's car would be hit by a Mercedes-Benz just as she got in.
